Our workbench becomes mobile in this video as we build the retractable wheel system.
This is the fifth video in a longer series about making a versatile Workbench/Workstation. This project is especially awesome for small workshops but the general construction methods can be used for any size wood shop!

This is a pretty solid little workbench. While once you figure out how it comes together, it is physically Easy to assemble kzfaq.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh by yourself. But the diagrams explaining the steps are really pretty bad. I could not get the handle pins in all the way despite multiple attempts, so I just used a screw I had on hand for the 2nd handle. I could not get the first pin in further or pull it back out. You are supposed to hammer it in, but I had no leverage and the handle is plastic and I did not want to risk breaking it. I will get a lot of use out of the bench because of the convenient size and height. It does fold up nicely for storage. They even explain how to fold it so you don't get pinched...that is important!

Of all the retractable caster videos I've seen thus far, these look to be the best. Even the ones shown for the lighter tool are better than the others. I've seen a caster mechanism that looks similar to that, but they used two pieces of wood that rub against each other rather than a roller. This mechanism that uses a cam (or "eccentric" as you put it) reminds me of one I saw in a diagram years ago. I think it might have been in a Family Handyman magazine, or possibly some other woodworking magazine.

Hi Neat work, the only bit I would do different is to bolt the wooden pivot/bearing/dowel holders to cross member as load would be applied up on them as the casters are pushed down otherwise great job ,G

Very elegant! Perhaps a thin nylon plate for the eccentric to rub against will be smoother. This is a really nice design!

Cracking bench idea and liftable caster's. Did I miss the part how the Dowl stops sliding out the holder's after time?

Haha no, you didn´t miss that part. I thought about putting some stop-pin through the dowel, but I use the mechanism only in rare occasions and then it doesn´t bother me at all.

Very well presented bench build. At 12:54, you suggest that the blocks for the dowel don’t carry any load. Are those blocks part of lifting the bench when the wheels are used?

I think he's saying those screws are not carrying any load because the very large bolts do that, the screws are just for positioning and tightening.

Brilliant concept. I wondered why you didn’t leave the dowl the full length of the work bench so that one action from either end would lift or drop all 4 feet at the same time

Thanks :) That was my initial thought but I was afraid that the required momentum would get so high that it would simply twist the 2 m long dovel, instead of moving the 2 feet at the opposite end.

I really like it however I think I would have run one dowel the length of the table so you could adjust all the wheels at the same time for any side. Regardless love the idea and the way you try to avoid as much as possible all screws and nails

Hi Andre, thank you! My first thought was one long dowel, too. But then I got concerned that it would only really lift one set of legs and leave the other one half way down, because of flex and twist in a 6 foot long dowel, I guess it would have had to be much thicker. Sehr gut! Ich bin gerade auch beim bau einer Hobelbank. Da Ich aber die Bank so bauen musste, dass die Bank (wenn Ich um/ausziehe) wieder zusammenbau bar ist konnte Ich leider kein solch ein System wie du verwenden. Ich habe Stattdessen 2 Keile an einer kurzen seite an der Werkbank. Mit einer Gewinde Spindel wird ein keil verschoben und drückt den anderen nach unten. Dadurch setzen bei mir sich die Räder auf. LG

Sehr schönes Projekt. Ich hatte mich von der gleichen Werkbank inspiriert gefühlt bin aber noch in der Planung daher verfolge ich gern wie es weitergeht. Mich würde interessieren, könntest du etwas mehr bilder oder ein kurzes Video machen von den Rollen unter dem Hobel? Das würde mich für meinen sehr interessieren, da ich im moment eine einfache platte darunter habe mit fixierbaren rollen, was mit aber nicht soo sehr gefällt, da es nicht 100% stabil ist. Viele Grüße aus Neuseeland. Cheers.

Hi Tim, the wheels are 32 cm in diameter, the saw has a reach of 30 cm and a maximum height under the blade guides of 18 cm.

Surprised the dowel was placed in the thin part of the cam on the lift. Waxing the parts might help on the easing of the cam action?

Waxing is a great idea! Will do. The dowel goes all the way through, I just had it enter on that side because it´s the surface that won´t get in contact with the wheel board. Regards

Hi, I had them made at a metal shop from 10 mm steel plate and M 20 threaded rod, aka half inch or 3/8 inch steel and 3/4 inch threaded rod, diameter was about 80 mm or circa 3 inches.

Hi, thanks! I bought this one: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0043VUCGO/ I took out one of the springs and straigtened the bottom on sandpaper...it´s a cheap one ;) It´s not the most precise but good for my needs. Cheers :)

14:37 how did you ensure that the mechanism cant flip out like you see here? It looks like it can happen by pulling at the leverage or did i miss something?

Hi Raphael, nothing really, good eye! I thought about adding a crosspin behind the first block, but after trying the mechanism i noticed that it wont be necessary, the mechanism doesn´t get pushed out or anything by using it, I would have to pull on it. So I could still easily add something, but don´t have to :) Regards

in case you want to here a little easy idea, just drill a hole and lime a pin of wood in there. Not that nice looking but simple ;)

Hallo! Du hast den Griff nicht am "Nach-vorne-Rutschen" gehindert. Ist mir im Video aufgefallen. Aber mein lieber Schieber, das ist alles wie fuer Uebermenschen gemacht. Ich bin ja schon ein Fan von Stabilitaet. Mein Tisch hat auch ungefaehr 150 Kg. Aber das ist schon gewaltig. Was vergleichbares hab ich bisher nur bei James King in den USA gesehen. Ich bin auf den naexten Teil gespannt.

Hallo! Ich hatte überlegt, ob ich noch eine Sicherung einbaue, aber weil ich die Mechanik nicht oft benutzen werde, hab ich es erstmal so gelassen. Bisher stört es mich nicht. Das hohe Gewicht kommt durch die Schränke, die noch eingebaut werden und deren Füllung. Die tragende Konstruktion, wie sie in den Animationen zu sehen ist, kommt auf ca. 80kg. Viele Grüße!

Wait a minute. You made "small mistakes" while figuring out how to build the thing you're building? And then you have the gall to admit this in public? I thought all you KZfaqrs were born with all the knowledge and perfect mastery of every skill possible and imaginable in crafting masterpieces! You mean you're just like the rest of us? Somehow I'm going to have to figure out how to ignore that information while watching this video. I can't go around thinking you're not perfect or anything. :)
