I just built this today, works perfectly. I'm probably going to use a microfiber cloth around the seat post when mounting to the clamp but overall very good option for the money. Thank you!

I did the same exact thing, except I bought a pair of wide mouth vise grips and welded two pieces of angle iron to the tips, so that when the vise grips are closed, the angle iron pieces formed a square. This way, it's a quick clamp to any post. Don't forget a shop rag or something to keep from scratching.

Great idea. I just modified it a little and it works great. I mounted it to a wall instead of the ceiling and unscrew the pipe from the mounting bracket when I'm done. I can't believe how simple and effective this was. Plus now I have an 18" pipe clamp. Thanks for the inspiration.

This is the way forward.....even better get two flanges one at shoulder height and one at stomach height. Now you have a stand to get the entire bike off the ground and one to have just one wheel off the ground. Save some money and buy two 1$ pony clamps from lowes instead of the pipe clamp does the exact same thing. Wrap pipe and clamps in duck tape to protect bike! Voila!

Honestly, this looks pretty great. Thanks for the inspiration! The pipe clamp for other projects will probably be worth it alone, and I imagine if you put a little pipe dope on the ends you'll get a slightly smoother installation and perhaps better stability. If you cut a v shaped notch in two pieces of wood and add some rubber (like an old inner tube cut up) you'll get twice as much contact area with less compression.

@VictorQuesada-bl1xk
@VictorQuesada-bl1xk 7 ай бұрын
And if you don't have a 4'x4' scrap of wood lying around, you can make a base like it by cutting out a notch in two 2x4s and assembling them like Lincoln Logs. Any kind of Elmer's Glue (or other reputable wood glue) will hold them together if you make the fit tight enough, though adding a wooden shim with some glue and screwing the two pieces together would also work. I really need to make this thing now lol

I made a freestanding bike stand out of the metal pipe a few months ago. I had a Home Depot gift card and couldn’t think of what to buy. I have been looking for a way to actually clamp the seat post since I bought it instead of just hanging it. The pipe clamp was a really good idea and I will definitely be using it. I think I might also try to add some pvc to the clamp so that it cups around the seat post like the real stands. Thanks so much

Not a bad idea especially for those that already have/can use a pipe clamp in the future. However it is probably better suited for a lower ceiling basement than high garage ceiling. Good job warning about over clamping, those things can put out some serious force. Make sure to wrap some sort of tape/protection stickers around where the black pipe may contact your frame/seatpost since that coating tends to rub onto things. Additionally if you don't mind a top tube clamp you can skip the elbow and second pipe.

crazy I have done stacks of plumbing and I just cannot think of uses for pipe, other than plumbing :P With that said, based on how much taht wiggles it will not hold for long before it comes out of the wood. I think people can be creative enough to think of other ways. I would recommend actually doing a horizontal stand and putting the pipe itself into the wood or clamping it to a two by four if you can. Good luck. I have extra pipe so I will go ahead and build something like this, however I think most would be better off ordering one.

Those Park stands are designed for shop use. Yes they are expensive. But if you are opening and closing it 50+ times a day you want it to last more than a week. You could get a "Bench Top" style clamp for about $50 on Amazon, and build a sturdy base out of a few framing 2x4s which are about $2 each. Plus the costs of screws. Even if you had to buy a cheap miter saw + box (about $10) to get nice clean 45 degree cuts, it would still be less than an $80 project.

It's okay in a pinch, but some commentary here. First, it would have been easier to screw the elbow onto the drop pipe then, the drop pipe onto the flange, then mount the flange to the floor joist. Then the horizontal pipe and finally the pipe clamp. Second, the whole set up is going to be REALLY shaky and springy while working on a bike. Lastly, it's low enough to bump your head on if you're not careful. Not a bad effort, but as made, a bit too shaky for me. Bracing it would help, but then you're back to H.Depot for more pipe and fittings. So when you add it all up, you'd probably be just as well off buying a bike stand. But again, good effort. Simple and good for occasional use.

If the fixed end of the clamp is slipping along the bar you may be able to scuff up the bar with sandpaper so it's grippier (especially if you're using something like galvanized instead of black pipe). Otherwise it may be a broken clamp mechanism.
