How to bunny hop a Mountain Bike - And why the rear wheel lift is keeping you stuck! To scoop as part of how to bunny hop will limit your height!
As a full-time mtb coach, having taught hundredsof riders how to bunnyhop - let me tell you: As a short rider learning a bunny hop is a challenge - it can actually be very frustrating, especially if you are practicing a rear wheel lift as part of learning how to bunny hop. Many bunny hop tutorials and how to bunny hop videos seperate the move into a front and a rear wheel lift - BUT in this how to bunny hop video you will find out why especially short riders should NOT practice rear wheel lifts to learn to bunny hop!

Great video! I can clearly see that what I have been doing are "bunny flops". I struggle with bringing the handlebars to my hips, though I have a sneaking suspicion that a large part of my problem is my bike currently has too long of a reach. I am looking into changing the stem and handlebars for a shorter stem and a higher rise in the near future. I love your videos! They have helped me tremendously over the last few months in understanding different skills. I have even managed to get my 8 year old son to watch several with me. The video on stopping negative self talk was a huge help with my son.

Interesting. I agree with what you are saying and mostly because to lift the rear wheel I have never taught riders to scoop to do it. I have always taught riders to push forward on the bars as they are jumping up. Once the legs are extended you then need to bring them up. I have seen people talk about scooping the pedals and yeah, that isn't how to bunnyhop. What gets the rear wheel off the ground is the combination of springing upward with the legs, like when shooting a basketball, and then pushing forward on the bars. That's exactly what you said and showed. I think the difference is in how to explain it and teach it. The thing I am noticing in your technique, and I really like it, is how you leverage the front end, pulling it towards your body, as you spring up. This is that initial pop and I actually think for a smaller built person this is excellent and uses more leverage and less energy. I have a tendency to upper body everything and use brute strength and even though that works, it's not as smooth and certainly takes more effort. So I have been trying your pull the bars in towards the hips technique even as my legs come to full extension. This puts more legs spring into the hop. I then watched some of those trials riders who can hop silly heights and they definitely get the legs involved a lot more. I do believe, even though I can hop pretty high, you have helped me even go a bit higher and with less overall effort. So yeah, technique is everything! Thanks for sharing. For anyone watching or reading this, stop teaching the scoop for bunnyhops...😉

The rear wheel lift never made sense. I really dont know why bigger channels keep talking about that part as a thing for bunny hops. I like watching tutorials even if i dont need them to see how they explain a skill. I am glad that i learned bunny hops while riding bmx and took that with me when i started mountain biking. Really good video. I like that you talk about bunny flops and bunny hops and give some examples for those. And that rear wheel lifts can be used for other things.

@@mikaeljacobsson1437 For the bunny hop my full-time carreer actually shows me: home training with delayed video feedback works way better than in person tutoring: for much less money 😇 - because learning the bunny hop takes spaced repetition, doing this in person would cost a fortune and involve a lot of travel. It's not the same, agreed, but for most riders I have worked with (even the pros) the "value for money" and "value for effort" is MUCH better with long-term coaching via online drills than with sporadic live coaching.

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire Make sense. I am not used to any of it. I have learned things on my own, either by just trying or by watching videos. I use a camera to film myself to see what might be wrong. Always a good way of progression. I would prefer sending videos and maybe sometimes have a video chat. I just had this image in my head that people learning would prefer meeting the person. Being open to film yourself and have an online coach opens up more possibilities and also gives you a bigger chance to have a really good coach. :)

@@Roxybike_Ride.and.Inspire hi, thanks for the reply, yes. I've watched that video too. I guess I've not managed to coordinate the transition from using my weight transfer backwards (with straight arms as that is more efficient), to the pulling the front wheel up with my arms. My current thought is that the straight arm initiation of the front wheel pull up, needs to be shorter so i don't go back so far, but when i do that, i usually end up not getting enough height to then pull with my arms. And if i commit fully backwards, i'm too far back to transition upwards and end up doing the bunny flop.
