I have been here before, watching someone with his back wheels in the water, so I stayed and filmed. Oh dear

The solution would be the use of the tractor parked at the side of the ramp

oh car is smoking... ill rev it a little to see if it stops

the solution would be to go faster and leave the clutch so that it spins with the flywheel not the flywheel slipping on the clutch (friction makes heat) and the dual mass flywheel you got in that car really 'likes' heat

Don't think that that would work while pulling a boat out

What? Most likely he barely had the clutch down. It’s just that moving very slow while revving high means your clutch is getting burned. Doesn’t matter whether he’s got it down

yes, try to move quickly from the stop and let go totally of the clutch as soon as you can.

I did the same thing... almost. Smaller boat, smaller car - golf mk2, smaller engine-1,3 carb 54hp. There was not problem.

Some people are of the opinion that just because a car is manual means you can't tow with it . If you know your engagement point in 1st gear then there is no need to depress the clutch once maintaining that speed.

you can tow with a manual no problem... the reason this clutch burnt out was because when he was moving he should have released the clutch more while bringing down the revs. his clutch control was bad

Last time I went to Littlehampton, a few months ago, someone was doing the same thing but with a Jeep, I reckon the 4WD works best.

Should have enough torque to just roll off the clutch and climb that slope

He truely knew his business on the pedals, he was smoothly dosing clutch and gas at every moment. But seems like his knowledge behind the mechanics was limited, otherwise he wouldn't have done it this way.

I am not a driver - so just out of interest, what would be the solution / good way to do it? Thanks :)
@hugbunny

Great question. You need to rev enough to get the car moving and release the clutch at the earliest opportunity. What this guy is doing is "riding" or "slipping" the clutch which means its not fully engaged and is spinning aggressively against the plates. It's a bit like driving with the brakes on. It is difficult to get a boat out on a steep slope carefully, however but the driver would have been better starting a bit quicker to stop burning the clutch.

Also, to avoid rolling back into the water, one should use the handbrake in order to be able to lift the foot off the brake pedal without the car moving. Then find the friction point of the clutch, give some gas while releasing the handbrake gradually. Once the car is moving, release the clutch all the way making sure not to stall the vehicle. Keep in mind that taking off uphill does require you to give more gas, but not a lot more. Just keep an eye on the rpm.
@warren6815
@warren6815 9 жыл бұрын
133col A lot of modern diesels have an 'anti-stall' feature. You can just lift the clutch and it'll keep the revs at around 1000rpm and just plod along (as long as the hill isn't too steep). The latest Land Rover Defender has this feature (ideal for towing up steep hills), but I was also surprised that a basic Fiesta diesel also has the same feature.

+André Højgaard Smith although you could do that i would do it a little differently. I would e brake and rev to 3.5 or 5 (not sure what engine that car has. 4 cyl to 5, 6 to 3.5) and then release the clutch slightly faster than normal to just get that initial movement forward, then you can creep up the hill instead of a fast and furious start. now granted my method would cause a little grind, it wouldnt be that significant imo.

2015 civic si has a 3 second times "brake" for when your on hills. The car will not roll backwards and gives you three seconds to get moving. All wired into the vehicles computer.

I think the real problem was that during and even before you started filming this, the guy in the car was holding/slipping the clutch and continued to do so for an entended period = always a very bad idea ! I see people doing it at inclined road junctions, if people understood what happens when slipping a clutch they definitely wouldn't do it !

I agree I think people are unaware sometimes of the mechanics going on. My last car 280,000 miles I had it 10 years, 110,000 miles never had to change it. Never pressure the clutch but I also don't drag boats about lol

Why the heck would he take so much time to pull a stupid boat out of water?? The man deserved it. I hate ppl like him who take un-necessarily too much care while doing a simple job. its torture to watch.

Couldn't he have have done that a lot faster and more efficient? You can get away with a lot more with a traditional torque converter based automatic. I remember backing my mom's auto RAV4 with a load of wood briquettes on a non lockable trailer up our narrow and curved driveway. Could not have done that with a manual (or DSG/S-Tronic I think)! I love my 6 speed A4 though.

a a agree. Maybe better spin the tires but never clutch. So much weight pulling it backwards and the clutch need to compensate that. Sure a little bit of throttle and clutch halfway helps a lot to decrease the lifetime drastically haha

Is is a manual or a DSG? I dont think a DSG is not a good transmision of you have do to stuff like this. If I would do stuff lika this every now and then I would get a old traditional automatic Lika a cheap Mercedes ML270 or ML400 CDI.

same can happen with DSG when you have the small engine with dry clutch. But VW clutches never been very durable. Towing a heavy trailer on a T5 uphill on a traffic light was horrible.
