First, let's talk about the single button jacket. It's rare to see a single button jacket outside of evening wear, but it exists. Usually, it has a peak lapel, sometimes notch lapel, but when you have that and it's a two-piece suit or a combination with a jacket and pants, you simply button the button, when you sit, you unbutton it. If you wear it with a vest, maybe in a three-piece suit, you simply leave it unbuttoned.
So what about four and five buttons single-breasted jackets?
First of all, I don't recommend you wear them because they very quickly go in and out of fashion and it's just not a timeless classic style. If you still want to have a four or five button jacket, simply button the middle buttons leaving the top and a bottom button undone. I strongly suggest you do not wear a vest or a waistcoat because those jackets are tailored so there's not much visible space for it.
The four-button double-breasted suit coat or jacket is a little more unusual but much more mainstream and timeless and classic. Basically, you have three options. You can button just the top of the working buttons, you can button both, or just the bottom, or if you have a square or rectangular button shape. Most suits today are only buttoned on the top one or on both.
The six-button double-breasted jacket is probably the most popular and common style that you will find. Because there are six buttons there are different ways to position those. A not so popular way to position the buttons is to have two parallel rows from the top to the bottom. If you have that kind of a coat or suit your button either all three of them or the top two. If you want to sit comfortably, you probably have to undo the bottom button, however, just like with any other double-breasted coat, you never unbutton it completely. The most common six-button double-breasted silhouette is what I'm wearing here right now. It's basically two rows of buttons that are parallel with the top pair being spaced further apart. It creates a nice v-shape that accentuates the male attractive silhouette. Traditionally, you'd button both of the bottom buttons for a very classic look. Now if you go to Italy, you'll rarely see a man who wears a double-breasted coat that is buttoned on both. Usually, they button just the middle button; they like it because it's a more nonchalant look and it's something that was really popularized by Lino from Alba Zara.
Eight-button double-breasted jacket is very unusual, and it provides a very Maritime look which is usually something you see only in a blazer. Prince Charles has one for example, and he has been wearing it for years.
VESTS
Single breasted vests are usually worn with the bottom button undone. There are different theories about why that's the case. One references Bertie who later became Edward the 7th, and he was so big, they simply couldn't button the bottom button and because of that, other people adapted his style. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the different theories are because it's just a custom that you can see all over the place. No matter if you wear a three-piece suit with a matching vest or an odd vest, on the single-breasted vest, the bottom button is usually undone.
OVERCOATS
When it comes to overcoats, buttoning is fairly simple. Usually, you have all the buttons buttoned simply because it's supposed to keep you warm.

Thank you both, let's make it happen. I believe in authenticity and quality and so I do not change my style, instead I am myself. Of course, if you look at our early videos, you see an improvement now, but I am still the same person. At the end of the day every youtuber attracts a different audience and I have no interest being more flashy or salesy because that's not who I am.

An unsolicited opinion here but I really enjoyed this video. I think it’s a great opportunity for men with little knowledge of classic menswear to get some ground rules down about how to wear their suits if not a little obstinately worded at times regarding some styles looking “off” with little explaination given. Love the work you gentlemen do here and these videos will remain timeless just like the outfits shown in the video. Keep it up! 😁

Only thing I disagree on is not buttoning a single breasted jacket when wearing a vest. I always wear three piece suits and over the last year I began buttoning the jacket while standing and much prefer it that way. The lines are cleaner, the jacket stays in place better and doesn't flap in the wind, as well as keeps me a bit warmer in the cold months, as in the warm months I'd just forego the jacket and vest all together. I only buy 3 button jackets and of course only button the top 2 as you said. I used to really dislike the 1890s style of only buttoning the top button, but now I kind of wish it would return as a trend. Regardless of what you think, it would be a whole lot better than most the current trends we see.

I find this helpful, I still follow these rules rather well. I now make suits and tend to do every button on my waistcoat unless I’m physically active enough to justify it or exceptionally hot. (I have a very different figure to Bertie and cherish the American spirit of inconveniencing the English) I have decided I’m going to design my next waistcoat with a bottom button hole on each side just to bug people.

Good video. I'm always careful about how I do up my buttons and I'm shocked by how poorly so many other men attend to this. Having said that, I think many people see these rules and just outdated restrictions and impositions, rather than being in place because of sensible reasons like how a jacket is actually tailored.

I have a pair of double pleated denim pants, they're not a jeans design. They side pockets, slanted, and rear welted pockets too with buttons, also a brass fly zipper. Not the 5 pocket design I don't bother with for years now. I love them as they're my go-to casual style at the moment. I have trouble recently finding stylish clothes that are my size, weight complications (though the best thing is there hasn't been any to gain, only to lose). They also have an expandable elastic waist which is hidden. I wear navy blue, black, and white tops/shirts and it's a never over the top look. I found they go great with suede and calf leather shoes - boat, chelsea boot, chukka boot, loafers, and moccasins too. I don't think I could wear this variety of footwear with standard jeans (5 pocket). The denim being double pleated has a 50s look, or something, that I like. If I couldn't find this pant, I wouldn't being wearing any denim.

Designating each button starting from top, center & bottom: Sometimes, Always, Never. When in doubt. Everytime: Sometimes ie. whenever you want (top button), Always (center button),. Never (bottom button). Two buttons? Always & Never. More simply, If you have more than one button, the bottom button is always dead to you.

There are exceptions: paddock jacket (where you must button both buttons) and Norfolk jacket. So, there are exceptions to an endlessly parroted paradigm: sometimes, always, never. On the top of that, I will wear suit jackets the way I like (and I won't care about buttoning etiquette).

If I'm wearing an overcoat unbuttoned (because it's relatively warm), and have a two-button suit beneath it, should I keep only one button buttoned or both of them?
