Something I didn't address in the video is whether having a gold plated lip plate makes a difference. I've had flutes with it and without. In my experience, it makes no difference to the sound or function of the flute. I would say it's a matter of personal preference with regard to the way it looks. Most advanced players do not opt for a gold plated lip plate but some Intermediate instruments have that feature.

Thank you, very much. This is a GREAT VIDEO. What is your opinion of the Yamaha YFL 222 ?
@TheMagicInTheMusic
@TheMagicInTheMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching! I think that the YFL 222 is a great beginner instrument. It would be ideal for a younger student, perhaps in the first 2-3 years of playing or for someone with a more limited budget. As players progress, I would normally recommend stepping up to a model with open holes and a silver head joint but the YFL 222 is a great choice to start and should retain a strong resale value, should you wish to upgrade later. Best wishes!

I'm not endorsing any particular brand of flute, however I personally play on a Yamaha and I have found them to be incredibly consistent, high quality instruments. It's always good to check with your local music retailer to try out some flutes in person. Another good resource is www.fluteworld.com. They carry a lot of great instruments. If you're looking for quality brands, Flute World will carry it. If you find a brand elsewhere that Flute World doesn't carry, it's probably a cheap copy and I would avoid it.

You were going to provide some links to online retailers, 28:40 . I'd like to compare pricing on different levels of flutes via some trusted online retailers so I have an idea on pricing when comparing to local shops. Thanks for all the advice.

I did this video with the assistance of a local retailer, so I would definitely mention them first: beacockmusic.com But for people in other areas, www.fluteworld.com, www.wwbw.com and www.flutecenter.com are good options to compare models.

@@TheMagicInTheMusic I'm currently still a beginner and using a Yamaha 222. I've had my eyes on the 472 for a while for a future upgrade option however is it possible just to bypass that entirely and just get a 677HCT which has a similar body with the exception of the .018 tubing, C# trill, and handmade parts? The only thing that might be tricky on it is the deep wall. The open holes I'd eventually learn with practice.

I'm so glad you found this helpful! I'm a huge fan of Yamaha flutes, but it's going to vary from one player to the next. Do you have a local retailer that you could visit and have her try both? That's really the best option to see what fits best. If your budget allows, you can also order more than one flute online, try them and send back the one you don't want. That's how I selected my piccolo - I ordered two and returned the one I didn't want. Best wishes!

this is a great lecture! I'm like 6 inches shorter than you and have little stubby Trump hands with weird short pinkies. I can reach everything on a flute with an offset G. I realize that means no split E for me, but I'm a trumpet player originally so I like to think I'm fairly good at fast lip slurs. As for weight, I'm used to holding up a trumpet so I should be OK there.
@TheMagicInTheMusic
@TheMagicInTheMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'd say that split E has become pretty standard these days. I generally recommend it for most people. Thanks for watching!

So I used to play flute and I’m looking at getting back into it, but I’m at a loss for what kind of flute to get. For background, I played throughout middle school and stopped towards the beginning of high school which was roughly 13 years ago. When I played I was intermediate-advanced for my age. At the time I played on a rented Yamaha student model. Now that I’m looking to pick it up again should I jump immediately to an intermediate model, or should I go back to starting with a more beginners model since it’s been so long?

I think you would probably be very comfortable on a Yamaha, especially since you played in one before. If you are concerned about getting an open hole flute, you can just put plugs in the holes until you adjust.

Flutes are *not* expensive compared to a lot of instruments like violins. They're on a par with trumpets, which are pretty cheap for what you get. I'd say the only reason flutes trend a bit more is the precious metals used in making them. I was prepared to spend about $2500 on a trumpet that's probably the equivalent of a 400-series Yamaha flute. And it's just lacquered brass. The only silver in sight is the plating on the mouthpiece and my favorite ones cost $50 or less. Since I've decided to switch to flute, getting a 300-series for under 2 grand brand new, feels like a good deal to me.
@TheMagicInTheMusic
@TheMagicInTheMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the 400 series Yamaha is a surprisingly good price for having a solid silver head joint and body. On the other hand, when you move into professional model flutes, you can find many in the tens of thousands. That's also because many of those instruments are gold.

*925* or *.925* more properly, means 925th/1000 silver content, which is the specification for sterling silver. This is found on musical instruments, jewelry, silverware, sculptures, etc. There's also "Britannia" silver which is 95%, there's coin silver which is 90%, blah blah blah. Just get a Yamaha that's new, very lightly used, or recently given a good overhaul and you won't have to worry about such things.

A flute without a bell would be fine, but without a whistle wouldn't make any sound.
@fingerhorn4
@fingerhorn4 9 ай бұрын
Please don't call them "step up" flutes. This implies your previous flute is inadequate, and it is rarely the case. The difference in sound between a good student flute and "step up flute" is negligible as 90% of the tone is produced by the player. The beginner/step-up/advanced/professional flute path is a marketing ploy to convince you to keep buying new flutes when there is no need. Except for a very cheap instrument, most decently made flutes are perfectly adequate and you don't need to keep discarding then purchasing new flutes. Buy a good student flute and it will last you years. Then buy if you need one a better flute ONLY if your technique and sound is improving to outstanding levels.
@TheMagicInTheMusic
@TheMagicInTheMusic 9 ай бұрын
I have to respectfully disagree. While there are some beginner model flutes that can make a pretty good sound, there is a pretty huge difference between the sound and response that I (or anyone) can get on a higher quality flute. Yes, a player with a low skill level will not really sound better on an intermediate or professional flute, but a higher quality instrument will absolutely allow developing flutists to better showcase their sound and technique. It also depends on what you’re doing as a flutist. If you’re playing for fun in your own, you may be perfectly happy with a beginner model. But if you’re playing in a quality high school music program, auditioning for honor groups, competing in Solo & Ensemble, auditioning for youth symphonies, etc. You would definitely want to level up your sound to be as competitive as you can. It’s also just generally more comfortable to play on an upgraded instrument. The response and action FEELS often better, and when it feels better to play, you’re more motivated to practice.
