Semi flush mounts hang a few inches from the ceiling, and the light shines both up and down.

For the bedroom look for a design with a diffuser or covered bottom to prevent bulb glare from shining in your eyes while in bed.
Most designs can be used as bathroom lights as long as the area is well ventilated.
To save money on energy costs and be energy efficient, use LEDs.
If the fixture doesn’t come with a built-in LEDs, you can always add LED bulbs.
Also, add a dimmer to set the mood.
