Tax (VAT 5%): 81 (69 tax back at airport)

The owner you spoke to - I've been buying from his stores for over 10 years and they always have (for me) the best quality jewellery. I know another owner who I also started purchasing from around 7-8 years ago when he had 2 small shops but now operates 16 stores around Gold Souq. The only thing you have to be careful with is when it comes to selling. Most shops will say there is a difference between the buying rate and the selling rate, but this is rubbish. The gold price is the same globally, so why should they offer you less than spot price when selling? The shops may say it's to lessen their risk in case the gold price falls the next day, but at the end of the day, that is a risk. What if I offered them less than spot price for buying because the gold price 'may' fall the next day, would they accept it? Of course not! So just be careful here and ensure they give you at least the global spot price when selling or trading in old gold. Oh and also, I always take a pair of over ear headphones as not to get inundated by the people that constantly approach you that try to sell you fake watches, handbags, t-shirts etc.

Being in the industry couple of things to mention. First is the making fee, lot of the time it may be very little to nothing on the machine made items however if you have anything detailed hand made or custom made you will have to pay the making fee. Secondly, the authentication I can tell you that bars can be fake no acid, machine or weight can detect the fake bars we often drill holes in them if they dont come from our trusted suppliers. However small jewellery can be authenticated by the machine.

We never went to the Gold souq but are returning this September for our wedding anniversary and my wife does want to visit the gold Souq this time. Really sound advice, A couple of other variables in travelling with gold to India- 24c unmarked jewellery - chains and rings - ( it does raise eye brows with bullion dealers in India see pure gold jewelry- and another viable method are 8g minted coins " sovereigns" and the occasional Britannia/ Eagle/ maple.

Hi Karl Rock, could you do a video on tourist trap in Abu Dhabi? There's a place called miraj art gallery which claims to be an art museum, and people are usually brought in by their drivers or tour guides, but once you're inside they will show you carpets "made of gold" and eventually start selling them to you. They will also tell you not to take photos for "fear of imitation"... Eventually they will also try to sell you watches too... It's frightening too, cos when I look at Google maps, around that area are other "art galleries" but they sell the exact same things...

Some point to note. Evening hours there is hardly anyone at vat refund counter in dubai airport so come airport in early hours if you want to claim all your vat refunds.

Hi Karl. A bit of information you missed out was that you can only bring gold worth Rupees 50,000 or 1,00,000 only when you have lived more than one year abroad. This is according to the Customs Law in India. If you come back to India within a year then you have to pay a duty of 44% on your gold items. Hope that helps

I always prefer big brands and i hustle a lot. My personal favourites are Joy Allukas, Jos Allukas and Khazana jewellers. They have shops in India and Dubai. And my wife loves Singapore designs but those designs have nigh making charges. These shops usually run schemes where you can save a fix amnt with them for 10 months and they waive 20 percent making charge.

Something I’ve learned recently was that XRF and acid test aren’t always very reliable in regards to plated items. If an item is plated you would need to scratch away that top layer to get reliable results. Bought some spoons sold as sterling recently. Hallmarks were in Ukrainian Cyrillic so I couldn’t translate it at first. But once I did it said it was just a mix of copper nickel and zinc. The seller I bought them from said they had xrf and acid tested it and it showed as sterling silver. But they forgot to scratch a layer off to test the core so it wasn’t a reliable testing. Just something to consider. Although I doubt that would happen in big and busy shops. My experience is buying second hand goods.
