I went back to the grocery store to help you navigate the seafood department. I always get questions about farm raised fish versus wild caught, and you really need to know where you seafood is coming from. I have no issue buying farm raised salmon IF it's from a high quality aquaculture, because there is not enough wild caught salmon and other seafood in the world to satisfy demand. It's very important to avoid poor quality farm raised salmon, shrimp, and fish, this is the stuff that gives the whole industry a bad name. I hope this helps you choose seafood better at the grocery store! Mad love Bobby...Dessi...and Art! XOXO

Wild-caught fish are often healthier, with less contamination from man-made toxins because they feed on a natural diet of smaller fish and algae and come into contact with less bacteria and parasites.

Thanks Bobby and Art! I was at a local grocery store a few weeks ago. They were giving out samples of Salmon to incentivize you to buy. I asked the woman handing out samples if it was farm raised. She said yes, but with highest quality feed. I told her I was not interested. She wasn’t happy. Now I know what else to ask! Thanks!! 😄

To be honest.. the best fish you can get is from a farmers market with local fishermen selling their local or regional catches. They will typical have fish that is not overfished. Because of this haddock and halibut have become some of my favorite fish to eat instead of salmon these days. Oysters from New England. Grouper when I’m in Florida is also really delicious.Eating what’s local or close to the area can really help your budget and can ensure quality!

On an episode of ‘Dirty Jobs’ several years ago, Mike Row visited a fish farm where tilapia was raised in pens that are suspended under the larger fish above them. I don’t remember if it was salmon above but the tilapia fed on the poop of the fish above them. I’ve never touched tilapia since seeing that.

About a year ago I watched an in depth video on You Tube about salmon farming in Norway and it was very disturbing. The “farmers” were spraying antibiotics from big hoses into the holding pens to ward off the unhealthy conditions of the crowded pens. When cameras tried to film this the employees made great efforts to hide what they were doing. Maybe they are not all like this but consumers have no way of knowing.

Great video Bobby! I love my fish. Re smelt: I once caught 3 gallons of smelt with some help from my friends. Caught 'em somewhere near Loyola. The weather was so bad that night we had to tie one of the guys who was drunk to a signpost on the breaker. My wife and I spent a couple of hours cleaning the smelt. By the time we were done it was time for me to go to work. We had some great smelt meals. I brought some to my grandmother and she was ecstatic. I'm to old and decrepid to fish like that anymore.

Do your own research because he got this incredibly wrong: I was stunned he said eat farm raised and even said Norway was one of the best: Norways aquacultures are so toxic that they have decimated their local wild salmon population by runoff alone. Imagine eating a fish thats the product off wiping out a species bc it was so toxic to produce it. If you cant afford wild caught DO NOT EAT fish. Paying for farm raised is paying for a toxic cocltail to enter your body. There are lots of documentaries following the efforts of scientists revealing the truth of farmed fish

Born and raised in Chicago.. When I was little, my parents use to go down to Montrose Harbor with friends and their kids, to net smelts, back in a time when you'd drop your nets for 15 mins and pull up 100.. That amount has gone to barely any smelts and a few alewives in 30 years. Portable stove, cast iron skillet, corn meal for dredging and oil to fry and it was stuff great childhood memories were made of. So sad that neither my kids or any future generations got to experience that.

Hey Bobby, although I agree with many of your points I have to disagree with you with choosing farm raised salmon over wild caught. If you google and compare the nutritional facts between both, you'll discover that farm raised is much higher in fat (especially saturated fat) and has marginally more omega 3s per serving. In addition, wild caught seafood is usually more nutrient dense due to its diet and variations in feed in the wild. If I had to choose, I'd rather have wild caught salmon over any farm raised salmon for this very reason. I also find it very contradictory when recommending other wild caught seafood in this same video over farm raised. Something doesn't quite seem right there. Curious to hear your opinions regarding this.

Will G I guess you missed what he said in this regards. Bobby never said farmed salmon is better, he simply stated it’s what HE prefers to use because it’s fattier and has less room for error when cooking because of the fat content, (which makes sense for his keto lifestyle). Versus the wild caught which is pretty lean except for the king salmon which has a little more fat than the sockeye but not the farm raised. He also stated the color comes from beta carotene added to the farmed fed. He never said to buy farmed instead of wild caught just gave information for each person to decide for themselves.

Love you guys. Thank you for all your video insight. I do want to ask if you could look more into the farming though? I've watched a few biology documentaries on BC, Scotland, and Norway and found the quite troubling. They breed and spread sea lice that transmit disease from one hot to the next and if they escape, pass on to wild salmon. Maybe these fish receive better care than unregulated ones but still terrible. I guess many of these species are also able to host off of sockeye and other fish species too. I'm bummed about this discovery...

Bobby, what do you think of wild caught catfish, bruised or grilled? Also walleye, Bass, and crappie? I'm happy to know. It's logical that farm-raised fish would be different, because of what they feed them. Often we be eating farm-raised. And I think I noticed a difference in the taste of that and wild caught fish. Enjoyed your recommendations but took exception to your recommendation not to purchase frozen cooked shrimp. We purchase frozen cooked shrimp to use as "shrimp cocktail" and in cooked dishes but we never cook the shrimp. For shrimp cocktail and our cooking needs we thaw just short of completely. For a cooked dish we cut the almost thawed shrimp as needed and then place the shrimp in a cooked (almost hot) dish just prior to serving. No toughness at all.

Unfortunately I went to Costco yesterday and just grabbed the farmed salmon without looking at where it was farmed because of this vid but by the time I got home I saw it was farmed in Chile. So look at the label just to be sure. I guess they still farm in Chile.

Great advice Bobby I'm getting into eating salmon because in the past I had a bad experience with fish I ate other seafood except fish & calamari (I hate squid hadn't tried it don't intend to) anyway I ate some fish & it left a strange acidy taste on my tongue so I never touched it again. So a couple years back I decided to give it another try & now I love salmon but I bake my salmon I get it from Giant Eagle because they have good quality meat & seafood but I do look other places as well but Giant Eagle is my go to place for meat & seafood. I love shrimp it's my favorite so I'll remember to get wild caught shrimp or the already frozen shrimp I will check out Trader Joe's & Costco I just have to get a membership. And Happy Holidays Bobby wish you & your family the best.

What about the preservatives that are sprayed on the shrimp? They change everything about how they look, cook, and taste.

I was thinking the same thing. Look at the ingredients. Do not buy with preservatives.

Thanks Bobby, in another video you had said that you would only trust the Icelandic farm raised and from Whole Foods. Is that still the best salmon ?
