How to Bypass Starter Safety Switches on a Tractor

Just another quick "fix" on the tractor

This poor little tractor is riddled with these safety switches. Sure, they all have their purpose to prevent accidents, but if they wear out or malfunction, then they can lead to MORE accidents! By running a new wire direct from the ignition to the starter relay, I'm bypassing all of the start safety switches. So it doesn't matter if they work or not, they are obsolete now. Most important thing, don't start the tractor unless you are sitting in the seat, with your foot on the clutch and brake!

Thanks for the video Tom. My 3045 wouldn't start yesterday and I spent forever trying to track down the issue. Finally jumped the solenoid to get something taken care of. I was really hoping you had it all figured out for me! I tested the clutch switch for continuity, and it appears to work fine. Now I know where the other switches are located to get them. Hopefully I can get lucky and find the issue!

@@TomBrueggen I finally figured it out. I bought a portion of a manual on eBay a while back, and it ended up having a flow chart for troubleshooting a no-start situation. Ended up being the R1 start relay (last step in the flow-chart of course). When I unplugged it the connectors were rather corroded. I cleaned them up as best I could and reinstalled it and everything seems to be working now! I don't have a dealer to get parts from nearby so it was nice to not have to find one. God is good!

Go to the switch find the post that is positive that has power cut it jump jumper wire from that to the starter you bypass everything

Can jump the solenoid and it will start. Not getting 12 volts to neutral safely and pro switch?

Good info, but over the last few years, I have lost 2 local farmer friends to being crushed to death. Both their tractors had the starter safety lockout switch bypassed, started their tractors while standing in front of the back wheel, and paid for their "quick fix" with their lives.

That’s a tough one. I agree it’s not the best idea. But I personally never park the tractor in gear and never start it from anywhere but in the seat, with the clutch pushed in even though I know I don’t have to. My kids climb around and play on the tractor so I never trust that it’s in neutral where I left it. Always climb on and make sure.

@@jamescollins1960 the Mayor of Leesburg, AL died in 2015 when he crossed the wires on his doze, and it ran over him. In 2010, a childhood friend who lived down the road from me was killed when his tractor started while he was standing in front of the back wheel on his tractor. In the 90's, another childhood friend only got a broken foot when he started his tractor in front of the wheel. So.....I don't lie for effect sir. Stupid hurts!!!

@@mwillmek1 45 years I’ve been parking tractors in gear. There isn’t a spot on my property other then my shop where I could leave it out of gear and not have it roll away.

I've got a 2017 case ih farmall. It quit on me and won't do anything with the key. If you jump it at the starter it will start up and run a few seconds. If you turn key off and back on it will run. Until it starts to run out of fuel. Would that have anything to do with a safety switch not working?

I don’t know about a safety switch per se, but maybe a solenoid on the fuel pump is failing. So it was running along fine and just shut off right? And at that moment you turned key to restart and it was stone dead? Or cranked and wouldn’t fire? At 2017 I’m not sure if it would have any sort of electronics on it that could be goofing off. But I don’t see why a low fuel shutoff would affect the key switch. If it’s out of fuel it should still allow you to crank on it, unless it’s so sophisticated that it prevents you cranking and running the fuel pump dry.

Mahindra max with same issue and after all my research, I am going to replace the start wire with new. Too much Ohm resistance has built up in the starting wire.

did you ever figure out what the four wires were for the neutral safety switch? I'm having the exact same issue and can't find a replacement switch.

Ha, I never bothered. Ran a lead wire straight from the key switch to the starter solenoid so it bypassed all those safety switches.

Can anyone tell me how to bypass the safety switch on the shuttle shift. Mine has a fork on the shifter linkage at the floorboard. One side of the fork has broken off and the switch doesn't know when the shuttle shift is in neutral. I did install a starter button to the starter so I don't have to jump off the tractor to jump with a screwdriver. I have a 28 HP Century/Branson tractor.

Yes, exactly like my Mahindra. I think besides a resistance problem in the wire there is also a three/four way splice in the wire loom near the console that has either corroded or come loose. My tractor has had this problem intermittently since new and Mahindra couldn't fix it. Mine qill click and drop out when it fails to turn over .

Make sure your positive and negative battery cables are clean and good connections. I had an issue at one point with my negative cable getting resistance also

I left my tractor in the woods for about a month because life got in the way. When I went to get it, it wouldn't start. Initially thought dead battery, but it was good and strong. Spent a couple hours trying to figure it out, just to find the ground clamp replaced by the previous owner had loosened up on the wire, not the battery post.

As long as you're the only one that operates it but it might not be safe otherwise. Safety switches are good thing but I do think now days they went over board. If you have a test light, it wouldn't be that difficult to find which switch is bad. I would at least want the one on the clutch working. Be sure to hire someone that has knowledge of the situation so they don't kill themselves. lol

Yeah I agree. I prefer to fix things “correct” but this fool tractor is hard and expensive to find parts for. Sometimes it’s better to just strip it down. I tell everyone that operates it to make sure it’s in neutral, foot on brake and clutch before starting it. I don’t tell them I’ve bypassed it all 😆
