For those still struggling to grasp the mathematics, I found this on Bilt Hambers website that explains it in simple terms: Fill up the detergent bottle or reservoir with exactly one litre of water. Take a large bucket or container and discharge the lance into this until the detergent bottle is empty. Measure the total amount of water collected, and multiply this number by 0.04. This is how much auto-foam you need to use in your detergent bottle or reservoir for the correct concentration. When you have measured the auto-foam into the bottle or reservoir, make this up to 1ltr with water. This method will create the correct concentration of auto-foam discharging from the lance, as this depends on the rate at which the reservoir is emptied during use.

The math is easier if you multiply. Take what you measured (12000ml) and multiply with 0,04 for 4% or 0,01 for 1% PIR. In your case: 12000ml*0,04=480ml 12000ml*0,01=120ml You can do it your way, but I think it gets confusing. Thank you for making a video how to do it, makes life a lot easier when you know how to measure it properly :D

How do you measure when a product says 1:10 and not % ? So 1:10 is 10% but your pressure washer will dilute this differently depending on which machine you have so how much product would you need if your machine is 12,000 12,000*0.10 =1200ml 😳 my bottle is only 1000ml
@kvisko1
@kvisko1 4 жыл бұрын
In this case (8 below right? 😊) it is how much you put in a lance. It has nothing to do with PIR, the manufacturer made it easy for user. You can make a same mix as for Autofoam, and see what happens when it has the same PIR.

I just figured out an easy and accurate way to calculate PIR. Dilution on the lance bottle: 1:7 Dilution from the hose water when mixing with the lance bottle: 1:11 Final dilution easy calc: (7 x 11) + 7 + 11 = 95 so 1:95 is the impact dilution, which is equivalent to a 1,04% PIR It works to all dilutions, for example: Dilution on the lance bottle: 1:1 Dilution from the hose water when mixing with the lance bottle: 1:11 Final dilution easy calc: (1 x 11) + 1 + 11 = 23 so 1:23 is the impact dilution, which is equivalent to a 4,17% PIR Maybe someone already had reach this conclusion before, but I figured it out by myself and I'm glad to share it with John and the Forensinc Detailing Channel and it's followers!

I have a Stihl lance which I calibrated requires 800ml product in a 1litre snow foam lance bottle for 4%, 400ml for 2% and 200ml at 1%. I tend to use it at 4% as the truck only gets washed every 2-3 weeks and I live in the sticks. If I washed it weekly and lived in town, I’d use it at 1%. Try different concentrations to see what works for you.

For the measurement accuracy, 1L of water is almost exactly 1Kg in weight so if you haven't got a huge bucket with a scale on it you can use your standard large wash bucket, put it on some bathroom scales, zero the scales, perform this test then weigh the bucket of water and convert the resulting kg to litres. In this video the bucket containing 12 litres would be 12 kilograms in weight. *Disclaimer*: Not my discovery, I saw it (or read it) on internet travels - I can't recall where sadly, but thought I'd post it here as it stuck in my head and it might help newbies like me who are juggling the numbers! Huge thanks to Jon for his videos. Have learned so much over the last few weeks...!

Once you worked out the 4%, just divide it by 4 to get the 1% for the 125ml (I think you worked with 500ml at 4%). But when I've tested on my K2 and K7 I found it's nearly always just under 50-50 in the bottle for around 4%. The thing i've found more important is the flow (especially on the K7 as the pressures generated can be so high) and the adjustment on the lance to change the flow. (Which I think is what you've said in the video anyway!). I normally keep the the setting around 1 for foaming.

I tried this method with PA foam lance 1L bottle and Karcher K2 silent. But I found difference of the lance's mixture rate between pure water and shampoo water.(Both mixture knob is MAX "-" rate.) When pure water, I need 8L for getting empty bottle, and shampoo water only need 3~5L. I think this difference by viscosity of bottle contents.(May be) So I fill bottle with 100ml auto-foam and 900ml water.

Fill your snow foam bottle with exactly 1L of water. Measure this as it must be exact. 2. Connect your foam lance up and make sure the foam nozzle is turned to full foam output (Usually all the way to -). 3. Grab a large container, I used my 20L wash bucket and spray the foam lance into the bucket until the 1L bottle is empty. Add a little food dye to the water within the bottle if your struggling to see the water level. 4. Measure the total amount of water contained within the bucket. I done this by scooping the water out in my measuring beakers. 5. Once you have your total volume (mines is 12.76L), simply multiply this figure by 0.04. This tells you how much auto-foam needs to be used to achieve the 4% PIR. By doing the above calculation I ended up with a figure of 510ml. I need to use 510ml of auto-foam to 490ml water in my 1L snow foam bottle to achieve the 4% PIR. 510ml of auto-foam was added to the foam bottle using my measuring beakers for an exact measurement. Bit easier way thanks to detailing world review of autofoam

Jon, my understanding is that 1:12 is correctly stated in that the number on the left refers to the product parts and the number on the right refers to the TOTAL parts as opposed to the WATER parts. For example, a ratio of 1:12 wouldn't mean 1 part product added to 12 parts of water (13 parts), it would mean 1 part product in 12 parts total. Therefore a 1:12 ratio would be 1 part product and 11 parts water giving you a total of 12 parts.
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 3 жыл бұрын
No you have it wrong. At least I think you have it wrong. my understanding is 1 part product to 12 parts water. so 13 parts in total. For example I have 6 sweets you have 3. Our ratio is 6:3 and theres 9 sweets in our little world. Say you make a glass of orange. you put 1 part orange in and 4 parts water in. your ratio is 1:4 (5 parts total) I used to understand it the way you did as well but someone corrected me years ago. who knows maybe Im wrong though. but actually I cants be wrong. here is how to prove it. 1:1 part product to 1 part water. thats a 50%/50% ratio. but there are 2 parts to the system so total parts equals left +right side.

My BH Auto Foam is now reserved for when I want my wax removing from the car. Gave mine a coat of Meguiar’s Ultimate Paste Wax 3 weeks ago. Used 150ml BH Auto Foam + 850ml water in my Foam Lance. Left it to dwell for 5 minutes and stripped the wax completely off the roof and bonnet, and practically stripped it off the vertical panels. Thought it was supposed to be wax safe?
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 4 жыл бұрын
short answer is, it is wax safe. That paste wax you are using does have poor chem resistence though generally see my halfords paste wax comparison video. But there is a flaw with your logic and how you view this product. a paste wax will get buried by dirty and a pre wash wont be able to remove all that dirt. so you may well see little or no hydrophobic properties after rinsing with autofoam. but you need the contact to break the dirt away more. Problem contact cleaners is they tend to be cationic and they mask more. so theres lots of flaws... but I could put ultimate paste wax on a panel and do about 15 applications and dwells to a test panel and the wax wont be gone. It does not strip. there are other factors at play here.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong, but I go through the snow foam far too quickly! 😂 I'm using about 90ml of product in my 600ml container (2% pir) which according to Bilt Hamber's website is the ratio for really dirty cars. They also say this should last 4-5 washes!! I barely get round my car before it runs out 😄

Please give me a simple answer...I want to use bilt hamber auto wash in my 1l lance and I do not want to touch the paint after foaming, woud I be correct in saying that I need 4% PIR for this to be possible or do you recommend that I do hand wash after foaming? So, to get 4% PIR how much ml of product must I use in my 1l lance? thanks
@forensicunplugged4295
@forensicunplugged4295 3 жыл бұрын
Ok Autowash is not designed for foam cannon application. but its intended PIR usage ratio in a bucket is 1:1000 to 1:2000. 4% PIR is closer to 1:25. So your using way way too much product there. The whole snow foam lance thing and foaming a car.. A bit part of this is just because people love foaming a car. but covering the car in foam does not really do much, covering it an an effective cleaning solution does, and that cleaning solution does not really need to foam. You need the contact wash shampoo to do some simple things, provide a bit of lubrication, degrease and saponify oils etc, soften the water, inhibit corrosion. And thats it. so put the autowash solution in your bucket.. You HAVE to touch the paint after "foaming" You cannot do a contactless clean of the car, contact breaks off dirt that detergents cannot do, contact has to be made.. The fact you call it foaming suggests to me your american. Foam does nothing. You have to buy into this system. use the BH touch-less product to ensure the car feels clean before the contact phase. do the contact phase. rinse, dry done. AW will not be foamy or sudsey. If you want that just buy chemical guys stuff.

I dont tend to recomend it for guys at home using week in week out. A hell of a lot of guys buy it and punt it as a sideline on ebay. Theres also been issues with AS products being sold watered down on ebay etc... you have to be carefull with what people tell you.. over the last few years Ive had a lot of guys bombing the comments of my videos plugging Autosmart, stuff like "korosol is weak I got much better results with AS red7" this sort of bollaxs... etc.. with autosmart ultramousse your gonna be forking out 38 quid on ebay for 5 litres.. thats damn expensive for a caustic trade product, when you can get autofoam for 17 quid.

yes. thats why you need to calculate PIR with pressure washer snow foam lances. See sticky comment or description for easiest break down 50/50 is close to 4% PIR. 25/75% is close to 2% 12.5%/87.5=1% pir etc.. once you remember 50/50 =4% you can work out the next steps
@DasArab
@DasArab 4 жыл бұрын
Anyhoo, its the reason I don't use AF through a snowfoam lance. I use it through a Garden sprayer instead. 200ml in a 5lt pump sprayer and that gives 4% PIR and enough made up product for 5 cars, against 500ml, in a SF lance, which could do you 2 smallish cars.

Guys the easiest math for this is simple: In the example he used he produced 12Liters or 12000mL. So just take off 2 zeros (dividing by 100 for 1%) and you get 120mL of soap to add to get 1% PIR. And if you want 2% its 240mL and so on dead simple.

What about putting the product raw into the bottle and let the lance’s swivel wheel adjust the dilution? Does this pre-dilution method require the lance to be at its ”most effective” setting having the adjustment knob turned all the way to maximum? In Finland, where I live, winters are extremely salty and grimy (much grimier than yours, trust me) and a 4% ratio wouldn’t do that much here... People tend to even use 10-20% Surfex HD (or equivalent) before BHAF only to get rid of the salt in pre-wash stage.
@sivuluisu5801
@sivuluisu5801 4 жыл бұрын
And yes, 10-20% might easily strip off any protection, but that’s simply how it is. You can’t expect wax to last in the winter here and the only methods would be a very strong and high quality ceramic coating or a wetcoat/bathe+ after every maintenance wash. If you don’t use strong pre-wash products you’ll just end up scratching your car’s paintwork with excessive amount of stuck dirt in contact wash stage.

@sivuluisu5801
@sivuluisu5801 4 жыл бұрын
@@forensicunplugged4295 Totally understandable. Here the road agency likes to use (A LOT) salt (sodium/calsium chloride) that is known for bonding extremely tightly with cars' paintworks and doesn't come off easily, especially if the car is kept indoors when parked. Therefore a strong APC or solvent-based degreasers are required for pre-wash and we can tell the salt isn't off the car (surface roughness etc) if we use mild "summer" products/dilutions. For instance, in winter time I like to spray 10% Surfex on door panels and boot, then spread raw BHAF on top of it from foam lance, making it around 8% dilution. This gets majority of road salt off, although not all of it. Sometimes even a tar remover is required. Only after this the paintwork looks clean enough for contact stage.

I did this for my Kranzle 1152TST a month or so ago. It was 15 litres meaning 4% it's 600ml. When you sometimes wash 4 plus cars a day thats a lot. I reckon I'm going to go about 300ml, which is roughly twice what I'd been doing until I did the test.

I'm guessing that someone may have already said this but if you don't have a bucket with a measure scale on it you can always just weigh the bucket of water on a set of bathroom scales. 1 litre of H2O = 1 kg. Don't forget to deduct the weight of the bucket if you want to be really accurate!

BH Autofoam is one of the best on the market, but I’ve always found you need a lot of product through a foam lance to achieve the 4% PIR. Imo, anything more than 100ml of product to make 1L of snow foam is a bit too much. I think Autofoam is best used through a pump sprayed or foam sprayer as a prewash instead of a snow foam. It’s not the best product through a lance as it’s quite runny, making it hard to use in the summer and tricky in general as it doesn’t dwell long. I prefer to apply it to where the dirtiest areas are through a pump sprayer, let it dwell, then blanket it with an economical snow foam on top. Always works for me. You can achieve a 4% PIR easily this way as you’ll only need 40ml to 1000ml (1L) or 80ml to 2000ml (2L) depending on the size of the sprayer.

some guys want like a thicker foamy product that clings more and they can work with a brush. I tend to use it through the lance but I run about 1:5. I find it doesnt really need to dwell like other products. the thing is, even if the suds roll off more the surface is still wet and the dirt is soaked with the product. But this product does not really need to dwell like other foams.. or let me say its faster acting.. but ive talked so much about autofoam over the past few years Im really looking forward to exploring some different products in the next shootout.

What I don't get is why BH seem to recommend 4% PIR but on the front of the bottle is says use at 1:100 (1%PIR) I'm a huge BH fan and won't be using any other snow foam but IMHO it's not cheap. I need 450ml in my lance to get a 4% PIR, this means I get 11 uses from a 5 litre bottle which in reality with shipping costs about £22.90 at the cheapest, making each wash £2.08! I'm happy to pay for a superior product but cheap it ain't! I plan to try a lower concentration as Jon has advised. Maybe 2% PIR. May try the 1:100 though I struggle to get my head around that working as well.

Just as a note, the size of the snow foam bottle is irrelevant as long as you mark a ‘full’ line on it. The ratio is worked out from the total volume in the large bucket to the amount of concentrate needed in the snow foam bottle for the pir you require. Your maths is good. (Have a look at your 1% pir example and you’ll see what I mean)

@@forensicunplugged4295 The reason I figured this out in the first place is I used to have a nilfisk cheapo snow foam bottle that was well under 1 litre, so I couldn't copy the guide on the Bilt Hamber website. I marked the bottle near the top and filled with water to the line and dispensed it into a large bucket, then multiplied the amount of water collected by 0.04 to find out how much Auto Foam I needed and then marked that line on the bottle. These days I just use SurfexHD at the same dilution, and have some in a 5 litre pump sprayer at 1:9 for wheels/tyres/arches. Use it all round the house too, I've learnt a lot from your channel, saved me some money and cost me some too! All good fun.
