I ordered one, it was just shipped to me, I was worried that the lip from my Meike Prime MFT Lenses was going to block the view of the sensor, then I open the video and you are using my exact lens for the calibration process, melting my anxiety away :)

This needs an app for calibration. This is too hit or miss.

I've used this on a few shoots in NY and while onset I could not get focus on a single subject in a large space. This should have been the easiest situation for this to work. I also notice that if it's too bright outside it will not focus either. Apparently, LIDAR works best at night. I've recalibrated my Rokinon set over and over following steps to a T and still I can't reliably use this thing on any future shoots. Very unfortunate.

It works, but if you could turn on and off the autofocus WITHOUT THE FOCUS POINT MOVING it would give you part of the control you need. For instance, someone walks in front of your subject but you turn off the AF until they’ve gone out of frame. Surely this can be done in a firmware update? Double or triple press on the controller would be good for this.

Short press the motor button a time can stop/start autofocus when motor in AF mode.

@@PDMOVIE Unfortunately this method means moving the lens when you press the motor button and it is also difficult to do, when for example you are using a gimbal - on a tripod, maybe it's ok, but you still end up noticeably moving the lens. Also it doesn't work reliably when I try it. Really this function needs to be on the controller - this would be ideal. Firmware update?

I just got this yesterday. Motor is almost silent but like any follow focus system, the gear and the gear ring will make some noise at the point of contact that the camera may pick up.

Compared to my Nucleus Nano motor this Lidar motor is actually pretty quiet.

Is there a way to override it from jumping to 5 meters and then 30 meters if no subject is detected? For instance, if a subject exited the from from the side and then re-entered from the side, you wouldn't want the focus to jump to the back wall.

That's how it's meant to be! When the object cannot be scanned, it will automatically jump to a position of about 5 meters on the lens scale. If the object is still not scanned for more than 5 seconds, it will jump again to a position of 30 meters.

Just use the controller for manual focus. That’s why they include it. That’s also why they call it “Smart” as in your the one with the brains.

I agree, the product is so cool. But that would be more logical in term of cinematography. No reason to change the focus so quickly, just add a standby more when noone is detected in the frame. Or the focus follow the movement. If no movement, no focus change.

I want to buy it but I have a doubt... before removing the battery, how do you turn it off? Since there isn't an off button, won't I risk ruining it if I just remove the battery? thank you for the reply

Don’t worry, the design does not have a switch button. In order to get into work faster, this will not cause damage to the product.

Only one thing bothers me, namely: if no object is detected within 5 seconds, the motor sets the depth of field to a position about 30 meters away. It would be better to positioniären at 5-6 meters distance! All my work colleagues (DoPs) see it the same way. It is a great desire! It is the only critical point! It would be good if they could change this via firmware upgrade.

@PDMOVIE Well, it is on Amazon but not the liDAR Smart. Is there any video tutorial on how to set with no hard stop lens? Yes, there is a video on the channel, I found it, and thanks for replying back I wish it had more than 4m focus range and some kind of focus tracking

Hi Pdmovie, Why do I have to calibrate it everyday? After calibration it is only saved for couple hours. if I turn it off for more than a few hours, I have to calibrate it all over again manually, very frustrating, it's not saving permanently in the specified channel color. (im using the sigma 18-35mm)

I was having problems thinking I had to calibrate my autofocus set up everytime I used my LIDAR, and I contacted PDMOVIE and within minutes Jacob from PDMOVIE responded and we video chat and he talked me through the process of retrieving my saved preset so I didn't have to calibrate everytime! Now I am in love with the product and excited to shoot! I also wasn't close enough during my first point of focus during calibration. P.S. I am using the Blackmagic 6kpro paired with the Sigma 18-35

@@tobiascrow2792 I contacted them (the number is on their website) and they walked me through the process. Make sure it’s calibrated properly and if it is, everytime you turn it on just turn the lens to the closest point then the furthest point and it comes on

You need an app or something more specific than this video… even a well thought out instruction card…. The user experience has been dismal so far with this follow focus.

I followed the instructions and other than one typo I saw in the instructions that came with my unit, it was rather easy to understand and setup. I even used a tape measure for good measure. I also used the zoom view on my monitor for more accurate focus.

Have the issue of once calibrated, all works fine.. but when I turn off the camera & Lidar, once restarted, nothing happens.. as if the calibration was never saved. Need to solve this!

After restarting, you still need to relearn/calibrate the lens stroke. But there is no need to set the autofocus again.

+1 No matter how hard I tighten the tube attachments, when calibrating the lens, the gear jumps the gear ring EVERY time. I also regret…

This is caused by the action of force. You can find a way to fix the gap between the catheter and the lens, and you can effectively solve the problem.

Pretty strong motor. Probably best to use another mounting solution. I particularly dislike the shoe mounted rod clamp because it tightens on to the shoe and the rod at the same time. I opted to switch it out for a nato rod clamp that has a separate clamp for the rod. The only draw back is possible having something that rigid may make your motor more prone to damage as hitting the motor by accident will not cause it to give way of obstacles.

Very frustrating. Calibration NEVER covers the full range of motion of any lens I attach.

I have 4 lenses calibrated and working fine. It took a little while to get into the auto focus calibration setting but each time I did, the process was super easy and took about 2-3 minutes per lens.

And there is already a calibration of the minimum focal length of 0.4 m. Are you serious? What about macro filming? After all, this information is not indicated anywhere. This information is available in the instructions in the box itself when unpacking. I was counting on the fact that the focus would work at all available dangerous lens distances. You didn't mention this anywhere in your product release. I am very upset about this purchase.

Usually, the reason why you cannot enter the autofocus settings is because the time between the first click and the second long press is too long. Just press the first and second times more consistently.
