How to Calibrate Your DR PH100 Meter - Best Value for a Reliable PH Meter for Home Brewing
There are a lot of choices and I've been using this on for a while now and believe it is the best value currently on the market for home brewing. It compares well with some well over $100 in comparable features but averages around $30. They do have one that is only a little more with a and backlit if you like to brew in the dark.
All rated at 0.01 accuracy although I have seen some mention of 0.03 in regards to calibration accuracy.
DR Meter PH100-V - No Longer available
DR Meter PH838 (Backlit)

15 Pack PH Meter Buffer Solution
amzn.to/2Y5QobH
PH Meter Electrode Storage Solution
amzn.to/3sEsvFW
If you have to have something that is more expensive and has Bluetooth for your phone Apera is a very good brand in PH Meters and this one is also rated at 0.01 but will run you around $150 (a bit out of my price range)

Ideally you would be using a new cup of distilled water between cups(maybe even wiping sensors with a Kimtech wipe, but seeing as it reads correctly i would not ultimately worry(If it were a research grade instrument more or less). Thanks for sharing a legitimate video for this meter, and others like it.

Thank you and I really like it as it is expensive and seems to be pretty accurate and consistent. I'll look up the Kimtech wipes as I've never heard of those.

I will be purchasing this today. I have a bottle each of Hanna GroLine pH solution 4.0 and a Cleaning solution from a now defunct pH meter *thus my new purchase. I will be getting the packets as you suggest, although I was curious if I could use up what I currently have or just trash it. I like your video. LOL What you said. You talk up what you profit from :-) Big reason I don't ask a manufactures review of their product LOL Good job. I'm a Hydroponics grower and need to keep my pH in check. Thank you

Sorry to hear that as I've had great luck with this one but they did come out with a replacement model late last year, maybe due to the issues some people may have had. Sadly with this type of equipment I swear it seems to be hit or miss as Hydrometers and even Thermometers seem to be that way too. I've gotten Hydrometers and thermometers that have been way off and you would think these things would be tested before leaving the factory. My first homebrewing Thermometer was off by almost 10F but sadly I didn't realize it until about 6 months into brewing.

Double check as I am about 99% sure they mean deionized or distilled as that is what I remember. I've got some new videos I'll be working on very shortly using a new pH meter that is a step up from this one as it is starting to show its age. It has been a good pH meter but it is starting to act a little flaky on the readings.

Thank you very much for this helpful information. I had also purchased one of those cheapy pH meters, which worked for a couple of times and then stopped working; waste of money. Based on your recommendation, I will upgrade to one of these meters. By the way, do you also have experience with Apera meters, which appear to come recommended?
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
I fully agree on those cheap ones being very frustrating and when I bought the DR Meter I was reluctant at first based on price but the reviews were really good and it has been very reliable since I purchased it back in May of 2020. Short Circuited brewing recommends the Apera meters but I haven't personally seen him using it but I may have missed that but Barley and the Hops TV (another YT channel) appears to have purchased one about 3 years ago so you could get some feed back from him. I did leave a link to a very fancy one that is really cool, and does the 0.01 accuracy from Apera but it is a bit pricy but I do like the Bluetooth feature although I might use something like that a handful of times before not caring about the Bluetooth feature in the future. I like techie toys but they get boring after the coolness factor wears off.

@@BitterRealityBrewing Thank you for the quick reply and the additional information. I do not care about Bluetooth connectivity, and 0.01 accuracy is a bit of overkill for my needs. My priority is reliability with a 0.1 accuracy, and your pH meter looks like a very good choice given the modest price. Thank you, -Wolfgang

@@TheWolfyDaddy Being an IT (Network Engineer) I question everything on a pretty brochure when it comes to electronics and software so I figure if they are advertising 0.01 accuracy and I get a bit better than 0.1 I'm good with that. If I got a 0.1 and didn't get at least that I'd be a bit more frustrated as I am a numbers person. When I worked for CSX me and my supervisor would meet with software and hardware companies from time to time and he taught me to start the meeting "OK so we've seen what you pretty brochure says it can do" and then we would follow it with either so what can it really do or what can we expect it to actually be able to do. Software and computer hardware companies have a tendency to exaggerate to sell their products.

So, I probably missed it but, are you testing every brew day?
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
I think I mentioned something in that regards and my feelings towards it but here is the most up to date info. According to the makers of this PH Meter they state in their instructions, after calibration you can use the meter continuously for up to one week or longer. Most home brewers seem to feel you should calibrate your meter ever 3 to 6 months but I think this assumes they don't brew a lot and that the device is taken good care of. My personal feeling is if it doesn't appear to be off, don't worry about it unless it has been a while and you have some concern of the accuracy. I pre-test mine in distilled water each time just to make sure it is reading accurately and if so I rock on. If it looks like it is off or jumping around a bit on the numbers then I recalibrate it after that brew that day as I don't usually verify it is good until about 20 to 30 minutes before I actually need it. (Maybe I should be testing it the day before but I'm not that organized or methodical.)

@@BitterRealityBrewing yeah I’m my case I have a range of 6.2-6.8 for soil so if I’m around 6.5 I’m not too worried about it anyways. When it starts getting high/low but the recipe isn’t changing, then I recalibrate it.

What happens when you don’t use the ph meter in a while and the electrode gets dry
@BitterRealityBrewing
@BitterRealityBrewing 6 ай бұрын
"in a while" could mean a lot to different people, but I have a solution. Clean it with distilled water, and then simply test it in the pH solutions like 4.0, 6.86, and 9.18 (rinsing it really good in-between.) If it reads them correctly, you are set and store it with the proper electrode storage solution. If it is off a little, simply recalibrate it and store properly afterwards. If it isn't able to read the solutions or it is way off and after calibrations it still doesn't work properly, you could either replace the electrode or buy a new pH meter.

@@SomeTechGuy666 I can only take an educated guess, but after doing some research, it looks identical with just different colored plastic and a different label. It even comes in the exact same box with the same accessories. Same accuracy too. The only thing I couldn't confirm is if the Kegland version, which appears to be the exact same as the Beverage Doctor one, has backlighting or not. It may have backlighting, but it doesn't show or mention it anywhere and for me, I prefer backlighting as it helps with contrast which makes it easier to read in dim light.

Jesus. Stop rushing it. The probe needs a minute to stabilize itself every reading, both for use and calibration. Put it into the cup and leave it at least a good 30 seconds, then its stable. You just keep messing up the calibration when you wont let it do its thing
