How t o call deer using a grunt call. In this video, I share with you how to call in a whitetail deer using a grunt call. I talk about what time of day to use the grunt call, how often you should call, and how to modify your approach depending on the time of the deer season. This is the first in a whole series I am doing on calling deer. Please stay tuned for the other videos.
Hunting videos I referred to in this video - • Time Frame for Deer Ha... AND
• MD Muzzeloader Buck

Liked, Shared and been Subscribed for awhile now lol. Great advice will definitely be positioned before making a call. Great Advice sometimes I'm in panic mode. Your videos are making me a better hunter, better Dad, and a better husband. I share the verse with my wife and read them together. Thanks again

I have to say that your information tutorials on deer hunting are fantastic. I've been hunting for 40 yrs and I feel like an amateur that's just absorbing everything like a sponge. Yesterday I set myself up in a beautiful spot (I might have to rethink my positioning because I was right in the buck's den where he had several scrapes, rubs and bedded), a steep embankment on one side, a fallen tree and dense brush for cover at my back, and from a slightly elevated position I overlooked an active trail leading into the forest from a marshy area and the trail continues to a harvested corn crop. After grunting for 1.5 hours with no sign, I decided to mix things up a bit. My call has a slide so I can change the pitch of the call, so I decided to fawn bleat followed by a doe, then that doe matriarch call that you described and demonstrated. In less than 5 minutes, three does approached me to within 15 ft. I only have a buck tag so I was hoping a buck might be following. The does, although very curious about me, and staring at me, were somewhat timid, but relaxed as they would browse. I remained as frozen as possible, to not spook them. Then I got the idea to slowly retrieve my phone to get a picture, I very slowly unzipped my jacket, I had no idea that there was a buck 20 ft behind me until it grunted at me. He startled the does, I guess they weren't aware of his presence, and when they fled he followed. I think he heard my zipper and perhaps he might have even thought that the zipper's sound was a buck because it was low pitch clicking sound. I noticed that the buck didn't use his usual trail into his area. It was the first time for me in this spot, and I only found it because I followed his tracks through the snow. Maybe he chose a different approach because he saw my tracks. I don't think he winded me because he got very close. It was all very exciting, I never called deer so successfully.

You did a really good job BROTHER! I been calling deer since the mid 1960’s, and if folks will watch your teaching they can learn a lot. I rattled in my first buck in the mid 60’s, the guy I learned most of my hunting skills from told me about it. He had read an article in FUR-FISH-AND-GAME, and from there started perfecting the art, he rattled up seven bucks in one day. He was a trapper who depended on his skill for part of income. This man was also on ship in PEARL HABOR the day it was bombed, a very humble man with real grit look in his eyes. God Bless and thank you for telling people about JESUS!

Great video and information Sean. Thought I knew how to call using a grunt but I learned quite a bit here. Thanks and keep up the excellent work. My wife even watches some of the videos with me even though she doesn't hunt. Once she asked, "What's Sean talking about tonight?" (It happened to be the SB1 and 320 comparison.) I told her that and she said, "No silly. The scripture verse." When I told her 1 Peter 5, she gave me this strange look. When I asked what, she said she was doing her Lit. of Hours and had just finished night prayer. That's the common short reading for that hour! Holy Spirit moment for sure.

I know, I pray the Liturgy of the Hours as well and picked that as a verse to use after praying night prayer one night. I’ve always loved that verse and after reading it one night I thought, how come I haven’t used this one already lol? Amen brother. God bless you both. All for Jesus.

the coolest experience I have had was this last week, I saw a good buck on public land about 100 yards away and he started walking away and I had recently watched a video of a guy grunt calling with his mouth and I figured "what the heck, ill try it" and 5 minutes later he was 20 yards in front of me...buck fever set in and I pulled the shot and went right over his back...he started to walk away and I tried grunting again, and he perked up, then started to walk away so I grunted one more time and that got his attention so he circled around and almost got right in front of me before he spotted me and spooked...I didn't get him but the experience was amazing...

He came in when it was just about dark and by the time I would have been able to get a good shot it was too dark to see. I am going out again today a little earlier and trying these tips again! This is the first time I was able to call in a buck and it helped with my confidence a lot! You just got a new subscriber!

Sean, super thanks for the video. That's first. I'm going to run through it several times. Yours and the mfg. vid is my gotos. Just got in a souped up Extinguisher call and it occurred to me that I have no idea how to use the darn thing. I have had a very simple deer grunt call for prolly the last 30 years. So simple that for most of that time it's sat in my hunting drawer. When I'd remember I'd pull it out at the end of the rut, make a little music...run the deer off and forget about it for another year or five. Appreciate your advice!

I'd set them up in different areas on different sides of primary trails or food sources and then hunt the one that's on the downwind side for that day. So if you have three, get a fourth and put one one the south side of a good source and hunt it on north wind days, etc. In the hills you'll have swirling so just do your best to stay out of their nose.

A grunt call is not buck only, it is a social call that can attract any deer. To only attract a buck you need a snort wheeze. Some grunt calls have an attachment to mimic that so just get one of those, like the primos buck roar.

Here in Western New York we had 6 inches of snow mon and Tue it's now Friday and 65 degrees and sunny and supposed to be this way for several days. We just started peak rut, however, I'm seeing very little movement except for a stray doe. Any ideas? Thank you. Love your channel.

I liked your video. I find rattiling works better than a grunt tube. I dont shoot does but I have no problem with any one that does .I like to use 3 methods sometimes all three sometimes two and sometimes only one depending on the circumstances to get deer to come in. The third method I use is I build a brush pile under all my tree stands with dry branches and dry leaves and then I use a heavy log 2 or 3 pounds that is tied to a cord. I lift the log above the brush pile and then drop it and crack a branch or two and then sometimes drag it across the leaves etc. to imitate a deer and I find that alone works better than anything especially when you are in an area with a lot of other hunters and deer are nervous of going in to a grunt or a rattle because they have all been fooled before. The noise is about 10 feet below you and that is where the deer focus there attention but if you do it right there is very little movement required. You might have to wait an hour for a deer to come in using this method and again they will usually come in downwind first so keep that in mind and try to get an open field on that side or a river etc. I am in my 70's now so I dont mind giving away my secrets. Bowhunting for deer is my favorite type of hunting but I used to hunt bear and moose as well and I think I was pretty good at that as well. I try to not hunt any one stand more than once every three days and I tend to locate my stands near the bedding areas but thats just me. If you hunt the same stand all the time the first time you hunt it is your best chance to get a buck and the odds keep going down until the rut is in full force than anything can happen. Good video.

Yes good ideas for sure. I've also seen people make a leaf like at the base of the tree, tie some shed antlers to a rope and then bounce the antlers on the leaves pulling up and down on the rope so it makes leaf rustling noise and antlers hitting ... All good stuff

@@seansoutdoors Heres another good trick I have used on big bucks. A lot of times when bedded they wont jump out of there bed until you are right on top of them When they do that I yell as loud as I can ( dosnt matter what you say or what language LOL )get my bow ready and wait for them to stop. To a deer they dont know if it is you yelling or someone else because when they are running at full tilt they make a lot of noise and have trouble knowing the direction the noise is coming from because of the echo off trees etc. and will stop for usually 5 or 6 seconds quite often as close as 20 yards and will often give you the opportunity you would not ever get if you did nothing. The deer is already spooked so you have nothing to lose. I know this goes against what most hunters do but trust me it works most of the time.

@@seansoutdoors When it works you will be amazed but keep it in your mind that you are going to do that or you will forget because it goes against all the rules of hunting because you are always trying to be quiet. I have done it for years and its the first thing that comes to mind when it happens but I only do it if I think the buck is one I want to shoot. I only decided to open up on my methods in the last little while because I dont hunt much anymore because as we all know its a lot of hard work to get a big buck. I get my share of venison from all my hunting friends so as long as I dont outlive ALL my friends I am set. LOL

I had an interesting and possible informative adventure yesterday nearly at dark. It's mid December and the rut is a 3 weeks to a month behind at the time. Came in early this year and one of the strangest I ever saw. Copious bucks at our club but scrapes were hard to find anywhere in the region. So I was sitting in my lonely tree near dark when 7 or 8 does zoomed across the dirt road at my back and stopped just afterwards. The wind was coming from them to me and they were at bow range, proceeding up a little holler from left to right parallel with my position. There was a perfectly framed shooting hole 10 feet wide. I had my scope on the hole and could have pulled the trigger at any time. 2 or 3 paused, broadside as they single filed. But I didn't take the shot. Just watched, hoping they'd get smaller to bigger. The reverse proved true. So....they all passed the firing hole, keeping straight and true until the last one was out of sight, no more than 40 yards in a straight line through the wait a minute stickers. I waited a few moments and for the heck of it I blew a single short doe grunt on my tooter. That's when the herd exploded, taking a left up the hill where a couple of the damsels stopped half way up to set up a snort session. Far from calling them to me I seem to have really ticked 'em off. One tiny little toot and I was hung out to dry, hoisted on my own grunt petard. Mebbe Alabama deer don't speak grunt? I dunno.

I had a buck go though a lane out of range. Grunted twice and 10 minutes later he reappeared trying to get downwind. Passed - too small. Blind grunted and had a spike come within five yards. Passed. Another buck came out in a trail and turned away from me. Grunted. He came back around my direction and I moved an inch with him looking right at me. He split. Another buck heading away on a ridge. Got him to stand there for 10 minutes. Then probably over grunted. Last one was a group of does. Grunted at them - a long distance away - got return grunts and a deer coming toward me through the thick. In retrospect I think it was a buck and he was coming down to challenge me, but turned away and the whole group ran away. Some of my coolest interactions I’ve ever had.

How do you call in doe in a situation where the land is pretty flat with no good barriers to block your downwind side? Any differences from treestand versus ground?
@seansoutdoors
@seansoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Just do your best to play the wind and not call too much. Only grunt one time, not multiple grunts in a burst and wait long times between calls. Don't let them pinpoint your location. Keep them guessing a little by only one grunt every half hour or so.
