I freaking love nopales! My parents are from Mexico and we cook them on a skillet for about 3-5 mins on each side, serve with steak, rice, and beans. Add some lime, salt, and tapatio (or any hot sauce) to the cactus and it's delicious.

@eduardomartinez-oh6bn 7 жыл бұрын
+Joel Benoit the texture of the Cactus is best described as caramelized onions due to its sliminess. now for the taste of it, as the KZfaq said, it varies on the location, moistness, and age of the nopal but it is best described as an acidic green bean. Note that they could also be eaten raw. Hope this helped.

Every time I go to Mexican taco trucks they have a "cactus salsa", which combines pieces of this cactus with chiles. The cactus soaked in the chili juice is soft and tender and soaks in the flavor.

Ah man, I REMEMBER THESE lol Mom used to cook these. Nepales' we call them in Spanish as you stated. She used a knife to scrape off the thorns, then she would cut them in slices, and cook them with a red salsa and shrimp flavored "loaf" (My best guess..I never knew what the loaf itself was). This part might make you laugh and agree with her: I would complain and tell her I wanted "American food", meaning mash, burgers, etc.. My ignorance of course. And she would tell me to be quiet, and eat. And she would add that I WAS eating American food. Food that the Natives ate from here to South America lol.. in her best English, "Shut up and eat your food. When I was little I wish I could eat like how we eat now, you don't know what hunger is" God bless my mother.. I miss her very much. Nepales. I like them now though :-)

If you have access to the kitchen, a veggie peeler makes short work of those spines... But out with your blade, after you scorch off the little spines, scrape it down with the edge of your knife. Cook like you did, let it rest a minute... Then you don't have to eat around the spines. Yum!

Good stuff. I grow and eat that stuff 🌵 best to eat the very young pads that the thorns have not developed. Use a good knife and shave it from the bottom up then cut the edges off. I like cutting mine in long strips and cook with salt pepper and garlic. Add onions and chopped tomato if you like. Cook till cactus gets a little slimy. And done. Very good with corn tortillas and refried beans on the side or mixed in taco 🌮. 😋✌️. Thanks for sharing your videos Awesome stuff

Hi ya Bob! Seen this video, definitely had to watch because I have 5 “small” cactus plants, I now know they weren’t ready to eat yet, but at the x I didn’t know and have eaten 2 pads (their about a foot tall) I really love the taste, problem was, I’d made wooden tongs like n another of ur videos, w/knife scraped glockets/thorns off, didn’t feel like I had any n me till I woke up, man oh man, they were all over me like I’d slept with the plant, it wasn’t miserable, just very irritating. I found a plant at the lake, knew only of the fruits then, wrapped it n a towel, dug it up, planted n a pot to contain it from spreading (now, I WANT IT TO SPREAD) it did good 5/6 years, spring of this year it looked pretty much dead, picked up single fallen pads, separated others and stuck em in another pot, they r growing good. Going to replant In ground giving bigger space....Bob, is there a certain time for transplanting them????? Thank u

I have a type of cactus which when you get the smaller ones about 4" to 5" long I can grab it with my bare hands rub with my palms and eat it raw which tastes like green beans as close as I can describe the taste. I know of no other cactus which can be handled or eaten as such. As for the other types of cactus I only eat the young smaller ones which are tender. The large the tougher.
