D & W, good job! I think mature, as you are canning, but not dry black eye peas taste better than dry black eye peas. Folks may be wondering where they can buy black eye peas for planting and the answer is, buy a bag of dry black eye peas at the grocery store and plant them. They will grow and produce the fresh, mature, but still not dry peas as you showed in this video. OAG

Yes, we did buy a bag at the grocery store and planted them. We didn't get a clip of the planting. We will be bringing this tip out on Saturday night. They taste a lot better fresh and canned than dried peas. Thanks

I'll try to remember to tune in on Saturday, what time do you begin the live cast? OAG

Great Video, awesome, man the memories, I can see my Mom and sisters canning like it was yesterday, ate beans almost every day of my life, every kind until I left home at 18. I said I would never eat another bean, I believe I could eat them every day now, especially fresh beans. Love'em

You're welcome. I'm also on the hunt for speckled butterbeans. No seed company has them that I have found. A lady in Fla advertised in a gardening forum but was way to pricey for me. If by chance you have any maybe we can do a seed swap?

Yum!! Do you ever put any jalapenos in with them when you can? I have eaten black-eyed peas so long with pepper that I almost can't eat them any other way. Black-eyed peas with onion, jalapenos and some corn bread. Now I'm hungry!! Looking good as always, Danny and Wanda!

You are making me hungry! No I just put salt in the jar and later add seasonings when heating them up. Thanks

they look great. I've tried for the past 2 years to grow these and they didn't sprout at all. do they have to have special dirt?
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
We bought the peas in the grocery store to see if they would sprout. It worked well. We will be planting them again. No special soil. Thanks
@annkruml8 жыл бұрын
Did your sprout them before you planted them?

Thanks for the video! Wanda, did you de-bubble after adding the water later? I'm glad you used a wooden chopping board to cool your quarts. I usually use a towel and am addicted to that "plinking" sound. That and a baby's laughter always makes me smile!

Question... My kidney beans doing great on the plants but I want them dried, do I just leave them on the vine as long as possible to start the drying process before I pick them?
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
Yes, leave them on until they are as near dry as possible. Then spread them out to finish drying and leave them for a couple of weeks.

I recently ordered some black eyed peas from a local farmer but they haven't come in yet. I was planning on canning them but they may not be ready before I'm scheduled to be out of town for a couple of weeks. My question is this, can they be kept in the freezer, unshelled, until I get back home to shell and can them? Thanks, Brandi
@DeepSouthHomestead6 жыл бұрын
Yes, don't wash them, just shell and freeze. Thaw out in hot water before canning.
@branditamplen83896 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much.
@cindyb88562 жыл бұрын
After shelling and NOT washing; Put in a pillow case. Tie the end in a knot. They do not freezer burn. When you want peas, pull out a mess and tie your pillow case back. Rinse peas and cook as if they were fresh off the plant. Learned this from a farmer when I was about 6 years old when he was telling my Mother. Have done them this way my whole life.
@jenfillyaw7 жыл бұрын
Danny, i understand that y'all started your peas with just a bag of store bought. How did you plant them? Did you start them first or straight in the ground? Thanks
@DeepSouthHomestead7 жыл бұрын
Straight in the ground. They worked very well. We plan to plant them again. Plus we saved seeds. Thanks
@johnpetry62957 жыл бұрын
Deep South Homestead been watching your videos great info and love learning from you guys. Did you say you used store bought peas and just used them did you have to dry them out first. Thanks
@JABn4e8 жыл бұрын
I've seen dried beans canned without soaking. This way looks like you can put so many more in the jar. Would that be right? Man they look delicious.
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
These are fresh and not dried. It is about 2 cups of peas. They taste like the other field peas that we have canned. Thanks
@tynyyn53448 жыл бұрын
Whaaat???? No chunks of ham in with the peas? Hmmm, I'm wondering if ya'll are really from the south? Nice job, Wanda. I liked to see that the peas turned color once they were canned. Good to know in the future.
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
We add seasonings when we heat them. When you can raw pack the water turns dark. If you blanche them for 3 minutes, then pack them and add fresh hot water, they don't turn as brown. Thanks

@pbudinsky13 жыл бұрын
rg1599 it’s possible I am wrong but I think if you add bacon you have to pressure can for 75 minutes instead of 35. Probably better to add onions, bacon etc. later.
