A great video presentation, especially for photo freelancers getting into sports or other events. I remember that I had to be guided by a media director to properly write captions with highlight information that included the when, who, what, where, and photo credit. What helped me develop a standard format was getting Photo Mechanic for creating a caption template that was stamped into each ingested or tagged photo. A plus in Photo Mechanic is the ability to work with an application called "Code Replacement" for inserting team players by their jersey number. Besides downloading current team rosters of major games, I could create my own code replacement rosters by converting spreadsheet formats from the web as formatted text (with tabs) to the Photo Mechanic application. This is a must-have to save time, especially for deadline work.

Good stuff, still pertinent.

I recently started photographing sports as I’m in a photojournalism class at my local community college. I got some great shots, but some of them I can’t see the number that the person is in their team that I captured. What do we put in the caption if we can’t find the name of the player? I usually just get a roster and look at the numbers for the names, but at times it’s not possible to identify the player number. Thank you for the help!

I think a quick bit on the voice notes in something like a D5 would be interesting, but absent that technology do you carry a notepad and take notes just after a play, or with shooting for wire services are you downloading often enough that you work from memory on whether it was a specifically important play?
