To be fair regarding the vampires. From what I've heard, it's because old mirrors had silver, and there was some "reflection of the soul" deal going on. So, as Vampires don't have souls or something, they don't show up in silver mirrors

Though, the whole idea/misconception/superstition that vampires would not give a reflection in mirrors stemmed from the idea that silver had damaging and/or anomalous properties against the supernatural. This 'pure element' for a great length of history was the backing of most mirrors that allowed for reflections, and people believed since they had no 'soul' and that mirrors reflected the soul more prominently than your image, you would see nothing. Although, to be more science-like with it I would say their concept was a simplified explanation of their ability to filter your perception. In essence, that perception altering, photon affecting, a vampire affected you with to make it seem like a normal being would not affect the mirror. The distortion of their image to create special cues meant to be translated by your brain to alter your view of it would likely be absorbed by some property of the silver rather than reflected. And your brain, not being able to translate the missing cues your eyes detected from the reflecting stimulus, would cause you to see nothing.

@@ArynosValinir Interesting thought. Perhaps they are more like specters than physical beings, thus light actually passes through them to the reflection. They don't need to alter light, they only need to trick your brain. PS. I also thought that was going to be the punchline Vlert.

@@ArynosValinir Yes, but if you watch the old Hammer Horrors, they showed that if you tried taking a picture of them, they also wouldn't be visible. I think more modern films have extrapolated that to not being seen on video monitors. In the end, it's a "magic/supernatural" causes this thing to happen, because scientifically it couldn't happen. Related, in some lore they don't cast shadows. Intrestingly, from wikipedia, "In 2006, a physics professor at the University of Central Florida wrote a paper arguing that it is mathematically impossible for vampires to exist, based on geometric progression. According to the paper, if the first vampire had appeared on 1 January 1600, and it fed once a month (which is less often than what is depicted in films and folklore), and every victim turned into a vampire, then within two and a half years the entire human population of the time would have become vampires."

Silvering is the chemical process of coating glass with a reflective substance. When glass mirrors first gained widespread usage in Europe during the 16th century, most were silvered with an amalgam of tin and mercury I think the idea of vampires predates silver in mirrors. Perhaps the bo reflection part was added later

"Vampires invisible in mirrors" is a concept that originates from old mirrors which were made from polished silver, and as we all know, silver destroys vampires. So silver mirror destroys vampires reflection but any other mirror or reflective surface (vampires skin included) is behaving completely normally.

There are three ways of accounting for a lack of reflection from vampires. - First is that they aren't really there and you only think you see them - this could be accomplished by manipulating your mind in some way, or directing the light towards you in the form of a hologram. The latter wouldn't cast a reflection from your perspective because the light is coming towards you, not towards the mirror. - Second is that the mirror isn't completely reflective within the visible range. With a silver mirror, for example, you could have something looking like a pale-violet ghost that wouldn't reflect off the mirror. - Third is that they reflect just fine, but are doing something to actively prevent you from seeing the reflection. This would be a reverse of the first, with the vampire manipulating your mind to not see the reflection, or emitting light towards a mirror in a method somewhat akin to active optical camouflage. By the way, if next episode does not mention Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulators, I will be very disappointed in you.

About orbiting a blackhole I think what people doesnt understand is that the blackhole is the same mass of that the star it was made of (actually its mass would be lower than the star because of supernova taking out mass but whatever) the thing that changes is only how close you can get to the center of mass meaning center of gravity so it wouldnt effect celestial bodies orbiting far from it (aside from the supernova) but it would effect the things coming really close to it

OK, I see a lot of comments about the reason why a vampire doesn't have a reflection, is because mirriors used to be made with silver, and silver is a "pure" metal, and thus won't show the reflection of an "inpure creature" like a vampire. I believe that is false. Mirrors may have had silver in them back then, but I can't find any credible source stating that that was the reason why vampires didn't have a reflection. Everywhere I have looked, it just mentiones the belief that mirrors reflect a part of your soul, and vampires don't have souls, and thus no reflection. Nothing about any silver. If anyone has a credible source, PLEASE show me.

One aspect of vampirology that so many get wrong is the garlic thing. It's not to ward them off, but the stench of death that they constantly emanate. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allicin was the only thing known at the time to cut through en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putrescine and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaverine . The death-stench of vampires was what was overpowering, not some mysticism or mesmerism, so the only way to keep your wits about you was to have something close at had that smelled strong enough to overpower it.

Of course vampires reflect light like everything else, which is solid. The believe of vampires having no reflection is a religious one and comes from the christian assumption, that silver is a holy metal. So the church statet that the holy metal would deny reflecting an unholy being like a vampire. Others say that the Mirror reflects your soul and since vampires have no soul, there would be no reflection. Because religion! Yeah, i think it's silly, either. And Kyle: Even if you don't like vampires, i like you. At the last GMSV (global meeting of supervillains) we did talk a little and i thought "What a nice guy! Completely bonkers for always calling assassins and trying to terraform the solar system for himself and his alien bretheren, but really nice!" :) P.S. Suppose that vampires emitted visible light, but *only* in the absorption spectrum of silver or glass. Then wouldn't they show up to your eyes but not in a mirror? Let me get this straight! You are criticizing an undead human being, borderline immortal, who can turn into a bat, wolf or smoke, has supernatural strength, drinks blood and who can only come out at night because the sun will kill them and the problem you have is their reflection in the mirror! lol

What's the feasibility of space elevators/low-orbit solar panels that absorb energy before it gets 'diluted' by the atmosphere? Even if it's not a tethered structure (I'm lead to believe that the part in low orbit is where most of the weight is), would it be possible to have massive rechargeable batteries being charged by a orbital solar panel, and then have planes capable of low orbit flight go up and collect and replace them?

Hey, Kyle, what's your take on space combat conditions where ships operate under a vacuum? I once read a science-fiction series where everyone on the large ships of a space fleet wore combat suits and would affix helmets when going into combat. The air would then be pumped from the general hull of the ship and kept in large storage tanks (presumably with scrubber apparatuses and whatever it would need to keep producing oxygen) near the center of the ship where if they were blown up it was pretty much game over anyway. The military personnel would then hook into oxygen lines if they were at station or use tanks for running around, but the general philosophy of the combat doctrine of doing this was that explosions couldn't create pressure wave and in cases of catastrophic depressurization of compartments people would not be so easily sucked out (not like in the movies, the author does point out they'd have to be pretty close, but that without air it was even more survivable because they're already buttoned up). So what's your take?

Hi Kyle, I really liked the last 2 episodes on black holes. An idea occured to me while watching. If humans had the ability to create and move black holes would it be possible to arrange an array of them to enable us to reach high speeds for interstellar travel? Specifically could we use gravity assist on a spacecraft by strategically placing several black holes at the correct distances from one another to make the craft go faster and faster? Is this even possible? What is the maximum speed that could be achieved?

Okay @Kyle there are two popular explanations for why vampires aren't in mirrors. The first is exactly what your saying, they are more spirit than body (mostly invisible) and the image you see of them is being deposited into your brain telepathically. This is why they can change appearance and shape - they simply change how they appear in your mind as they have no body to speak of. The second is a riff off that where - they are not invisible but seeing them in the mirror is completely unfiltered and what you see is soo horrific that your brain actively tries to blot it out so rather than being invisible in mirrors your brain just says "Nope nope. Nothing there - it's way better than what I actually saw" and your just left with a horrific feeling of dread.

Hey Kyle, long time watcher first time commenter. The reason vamps traditionally can't be seen in mirrors is because mirrors used to be made with silver. A vampires weakness being silver, they can't be seen in a mirror. I'm sure you already knew this though. Keep up the good work

One thing I never really understood about Hawking Radiation is how it seems to go on the idea that with the virtual particles, only or mostly the antiparticles end up going in past the event horizon. Wouldn't there be more or less an equal amount of both particle types going inside the black hole, or is there something about the antiparticles like a charge type that attracts it to the black hole?

Vampire explanation alternative: in the universe where vamipires exist, humans can only detect circularly polarized light with either right or left polarization. Vampires polarize light reflected off of them (as some materials do), and when the light bonces off of a mirror, the polarization inverts, rendering them invisible to us. If they were to be reflected more than once, we could be able to see them, but I'ts not usually that we see the reflection of a reflection of something, so that's where the misconception of them having no reflection came from. Also, being able to see only right or left polarized light wouldn't affect too much of the interaction with the rest of the world to for us, except it would be about half as bright.

50 Seconds in and I already have a comment. :D I agree with your comment about Vampires and reflections. I also agree with NereidAlbel in that the older mirrors used silver and therefore only reflect pure instead of Evil Undead. Anyways, the Dr Who version of Vampies not having reflections is simply because the creatures are using a masking device to look human, but their devices can't mask reflections, and their forms are so complex that the human brain is unable to comprehend them so it ignores them. Similar to how we can always see the bridge of our nose, but our brain filters it out so that we don't usually notice it. :D. Now to watch the rest. I'm sure it's awesome. They always are.

An now the final question how can we make a small black hole? The gravity limit is about 3 solar masses but if we want a black hole the mass of car we have to compress it enough to get it to become dense enough so it falls into an singularity. Is there a Methode in since fiction or better since which does make it possible? Also would this be an direct mass radiation converter where we have an black hole with an mass where the hawking radiation is big enough where we have to feed it constantly or it would just die, would it be self limtiing more food less radiation, less food good by black hole? is it save to pet it on earth or ist there the risk it could get to big and eat the earth? an other show on youtube calculated an black hole whit the mass, mass not size of an coin would explode like an nuclear bomb so i think it could be an manageable mass to but on an space ship. For an space ship it would be the ideal energy conversion system because it is not relevant if you get kille by an accident whit an black hole antimatter or an nuclear reactor there is always an risk. but black hole you have practical endless power would also make sense in the earth space ship. i have plucked the numbers in an black hole whit the mass of 1 000 000 tons would give an constant energy output of 356 Tera watt an has a life time of 2665 Years it has an radius of 1,48e-9 nm and would eat 4g of mass per second to stay its size, if the online calculators of matter to energy are right. with an distance from the black hole of 8cm you would experience an pull of 1g at 1mm=6700g 1ym=6700000000g very interesting concept

The Dyson sphere idea would also fix the nocturnal disruption problem. If we build a complete containment surrounding mini-star Jupe-jupe not only do we get to capture and use all that energy, we keep it from reaching Earth to disrupt our pleasant nighttime sky.

Big brother Jupiter is our saving grace. Its pretty nifty with its gravitational pull. Meteors and asteroids that make close fly-bys, get sucked in, making it a far away shield from these space rocks that would've bombarded the Earth. Thanks for the video Kyle ^~^. This whole talk (teehee) got me thinking: 1 - If the sun did turn into a black hole, would it emit visible light and heat from the solar wind of the transformed sun? And if so, would it put out the equivalence of the suns heat/light? 2 - When the Enterprise tried to Warp away from the black hole in the 2009 movie (That was TEN YEARS AGO?? Crap, I'm old), would that work? And would that effect the black hole in any way? Keep it up, Kyle!
