Want to start capturing Infrared, Full Spectrum, or Ultraviolet Photos? But you also want to be able to use the same camera for "normal" visible spectrum pics? Easy. You'll need a Sony DSC-F717 and a special rare earth Neodymium magnet. This hack also works for the F707 and the F828.
The special rare earth magnet enables you to temporarily convert the Sony from a normal camera into a full spectrum powerhouse, in seconds! The best magnet to use is a Neodymium rare earth magnet: 3/8" x 1" grade N52 cylinder shape. Any other size would be a trial and error approach. However be cautious to use a magnet that is too powerful because it could damage the internals of the camera. On eBay the seller 1960galaxy sells the exact perfect size magnet for under $10 shipped.
This method allows you to have FULL CONTROL over the camera when taking IR or Full Spectrum photos. (Yes, full control over aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc)
You may have heard about the Sony's infrared popularity, and of people using very dark neutral density filters while in Night Shot Mode to "attempt" daytime IR photos with this camera. That's nothing more than the myths and misdirection of urban legends that have spiraled out of control, leading far too many desperate photographers chasing elusive limey shadows. Using that crude method of ND filters and a blinding aperture results in washed-out green-cast photos that will leave you struggling through hours of photo software editing to manage.
However, the rare earth magnet method that is thoroughly explained in my video skips all of that ND/pasty green-cast nonsense, and you will be taking stunning infrared photos directly in the camera. Many of the photo examples you see in the video had no post-processing whatsoever.
I found this camera to be quite remarkable, amazingly versatile, and incredibly the best camera to begin exploring your direction into what is known as "invisible light".
Whether you intend to use this camera for creative projects, black/white infrared, false-color infrared, medical photography, forensic photography, ghost-hunting, spirit photography, or just everyday normal events in normal visible color, this camera does it all.

I realize that this is an old video, but I hope you are still answering questions. I dug up my old f-717, bought a magnet and am just starting to try the IR trick. My first few photos were just OK! Did you make a video on post processing? Also, what ISO do you use for IR? You have a great "radio announcer voice"! Thanks again for the great video.

I have been doing this with a 717 and 828 (much better - uses CF cards) for years. I never use the custom WB feature, as I do it in Post. With the 828 I save images as TIFFs. And I use the magnet a second time to change it back. It toggles. No need to turn it off. I have never seen an issue with IR focussing. That second line on old cameras for IR FILM wasn't that far away. You can adjust the aperture and focus, so do that! BTW I use a 720 filter.

It's especially good for portrait, but really, the nightshot mode, with manu controls also gives a very film vibe to photos, then it's me, I always edited them on photoshop to get that sepia, "not very monochrome" feel to it. And that's really an option I missed when I upgraded to a Alpha A77, still not that IR mode. Gotta behead a A55 and eventually convert it. That would be fun.

Troubleshooting question in case anyone else is having the same problem: I used the magnet hack and my screen went totally dark. It looks like the gray shutter inside the lens is stuck in place and can’t move out of the way. Maybe I did something to the magnet that controls the shutter? so so is it better to pick up an IR filter such as a Hoya r72 or to use the combination of two polarizing lenses? I already have a B&W Polarizing filter. I get the impression from this that I could pick up a secondary polarizing filter and basically have an adjustable IR filter with the combination of the two instead of instead of picking up the IR filter?

Either works, it's open for experimenting. Using two polarizers introduces some color with the IR.

Nice and compliments. I started with IR on the F717 with your video. But here a few comments because it doesn't seem to work that way on all models. Here in Europe (on my model anyway) the suggested focusing method doesn't work. To get a sharp image I have to go to the aperture preference and set it to f8. A light tele is not necessary. This gives a reasonably sharp image with the dreamy appearance. The image can be made even sharper by selecting the 'sharpness' option in the menu and setting it to +2. If you leave the camera on the automatic or automatic with program settings, the image will be completely out of focus, even with light tele. The camera then chooses its own settings in aperture and shutter speed and that does not work. Another suggestion: You can also just leave the white balance on green grass. Flip the internal filter back with the magnet (or turn it off/on if you prefer) and just turn the white-balance control button to sunny or artificial light and you're done. The white balance for IR then remains available for the next session. Those magnets have a north and south pole. For example, mark the pool where the internal filter folds away. This way you always know how to direct the magnet to fold or replace the filter. It's a matter of taste and what you want to arrange how. But perhaps a hybrid use is the best of both methods. For false color IR with a 720 nm filter I use the suggested method. For the 760 and 850 nm I prefer to use the ND filter method. You don't even need an ND filter at all for the 950 nm. This filter is dark enough. All these filters from 760 nm onwards produce a monochrome image ranging from olive green/white to deep blue/white. This is good for converting it to monochrome grayscale. You will get extremely sharp images with the nightshot mode. Sometimes you get a light spot in the center of the image. This can be easily eliminated with a Dodge and Burn tool in image editing software. Using a tripod is almost always recommended. Except when it is downright sunny, otherwhile there are almost always relatively long shutter speeds.

There are some options to add false color on IR images in general (talking about converted camera's and shooting in raw), but also on camera's without raw options as the F717. First you have to start to set a white-balans with an IR + some ND filters attached in the mode as explained in de video about this camera. Use a 530 nm or 590 nm IR filter to get more vibrant colors on foliage and sky. Use for the white-balans an 720 nm filter as the 530 and 590 nm-filters will not allways work to set a good white-balans in the camera. Set the white balans on any white object, white clouds are ideal. On any image taken you should get a kind of orange sky and a kind of blue foliage. With an usual color swab in a photo-editor you will get a kind of blue sky and a kind of orange foliage. If you wish to change that orange then you should the HSL options in the photo-editor. Preverably you should not use global color setting, but use the sliders of the color you wish to change. It is a kind of trial and error to get the colors you wish. With this method you're able to set any color and let the sky blue. Next go to selective colors to fine-tune your colors and finally set the the contrast or colorlevels to make the image brighter to your taste. Hopes this helps, and cheers form the Netherlands.

Dear X Synch, Your video is wonderful. You have inspired me to take the plunge and buy a $3 magnet! I am so disappointed to discover that all my IR photos (except those taken in nightshot mode) are out of focus. I have tried every aperture and zoom setting, but even at f/8 and zoomed in they are still very much out of focus compared to IR photos taken in nightshot mode at f/2! Is there some trick to achieving sharp focus? I have used the procedure you begin describing in your video at about 12:00 in, and that doesn't help me at all. Am I missing something? Please help me. Thank you!

There is debate on whether you will get better images from the uv or infrared spectrum. I prefer the IR, but a friend of mine uses the UV. Energy = light... but at what wavelength? Imagine if you took all the wavelengths of light at a distance that would circle the globe, the visible portion would be just 1 inch of what is out there. Amazing isn't it?
