My wife and I laid about 5k sqft (15+ pallets) of Argentine Bahia sod a few years ago in the middle of July. Pure torture. It looked exactly like this. That being said, a month later and it was beautifully thick and green. Trust the process!

I seeded with bahia. I did it in late April. I raked the dead grass up and threw seed down. Watered 3 times a day for 3 weeks and it filled in nearly 💯. Used palm fert on the areas when i out the seed down to be a low level starter fert

We redid an old lawn in central florida. 10 yards of topsoil and moved it around to fill in low spots and put a thin layer over everything. We fertilized, seeded with Argentine Bahia, lightly raked it in, then top dressed with @ 12 bushels of peat moss Set the sprinkler for 10 minutes a zone several times a day. Seed took about a month to germinate. Waited until it was @ 5” tall to cut. Lawn looks great now.

I just bought 10 bales of peat moss at my local Lowe’s. It looks like you’re in Florida, as I am. I can’t believe you can’t find peat moss at Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s such a basic staple in any gardening approach. I, also have the same experience with seating that you did and yesterday I succumbed to the pressure to sod. However, because of sod and visit the garden center that you’re purchasing it from and see the size that they have. Most sought that I have found in Florida has been cut and it looks good on the pallet but when you try to pick it up, it falls apart like a jigsaw puzzle. I believe that it’s a result of Bahia has deep roots and Saint Augustine and blue grass (from up north) have heavily knitting roots, and rhizome style roots. Check it out, it’ll help.

@@Thelawncarenutpurposely having bahia grass is definitely a Florida thing because here in north carolina that is a weed in lawns and you only see it on sides of highways. I’ve never seen a full yard of bahia here but it loves to creep into my customers Bermuda yards and then I smoke it with msm.

Thank You so Much for This Video! I purchased 4 pallets of Argentine Bahia last week and was so disappointed with the quality, but it actually looked like yours in the video. So your video made me feel better. I will say that I am perplexed by my Bahia sod having what I would call "straw" growing in it. It looks like maybe a large clump of dead Bahia but is very thick like straw and would hurt to step on barefooted. What should I do with these clumps? There are a lot of them in the 4 pallets of sod I put out. Should I cut these out and then try to seed the holes which would be about the size of a 4 inch diameter circle? Or would you just wait and mow it down in a month and see what comes up?

So I am about a mile from the gulf myself. Our "dirt" is sand. I've been researching for a year now. This morning I planted Argentina Bahia seeds. I got the Scott's brand along with Scott's turf builder. I tilled up the dirt because my backyard is nothing but "dirt" and a few patches of weeds. I'll let you know how the Argentine grass does. The bag says you can see results in as little as 7 days but can take up to 21.

bermuda is high maintenance....you have to keep it sprayed regularly or weeds will take over in no time. my favorites are st aug, zoysia, and centipede since they mostly keep the weeds out all on their own. With those 3 you will get some weeds in the spring but once the weather warms up all the weeds die off and the grass chokes them out. You can put down pre-emergent in mid feb to help with that part though if you want. While bermuda is the most common grass type found in the south (mainly because it's cheaper than the others and easy to grow from seed) it really isn't properly taken care of 90% of the time in most yards. For it to really shine it should prob be only mowed with a reel mower at 1" or less which is what they do on golf courses...again leading to the more maintenance thing lol....reel mowers are expensive to keep the blades sharp and replaced as necessary....also to use a reel mower your yard has to be very flat and level which is more time, effort, and money to accomplish. You can use a rotary mower on bermuda and mow at like 2" and be ok but you will have to keep the yard sprayed for weeds on a regular basis. Every bermuda yard I've seen that isn't sprayed always has a lot of weeds in it. If you look at st aug, zoysia, or centipede yards in the summer they will have very few weeds in them.

I never seen Bahia grass. Don’t think would grow in the UK. Why would anyone sod or decide to use Bahia grass when it looks rough after you finished. Other sods you get the instant impact. Is it more resilient to the heat and drought than st Augustine or Bermuda because of the rhizomes? Thanks Allyn I appreciate the videos and the info shared

You and I are going to be disagreeing about Bahia grass. First of all I'll agree you're sod looked like crap. I would be interested in knowing where you bought it. I retired out of this industry a few years ago but I will tell you that I have laid a lot of Bahia sod over the years. At my last house, I had a beautiful St Augustine front yard with irrigation. The backyard did not have irrigation and I had five kids and a couple of dogs running around out there so St Augustine was not the best choice. After killing all of the existing weeds and grass in the back we had 11 pallets of Bahia sod brought out. You can buy Bahia sod that stays together. By the way, I don't know if it's the case now but most Bahia that we used to buy came from pastures. The advantage of Bahia grass is that it is very drought tolerant and takes a lot of traffic. it also takes very little fertilizer. 1 lb of N per 1000 sq.ft. per year has always done the trick nicely for me. During the growing months, you're going to need to supplement with iron to keep that nice dark green.

It's because of the fact it grows in sand which over here where we live we don't have dirt. It is literally sand from being so close to the beach. Bahia is really the only one that will grow in it. Plus it is drought resistant
