Our Story:
We are six years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled with animals and joy. We plan to have a variety of miniature critters on our pastures, raise free-range chickens, grow fish in our pond, garden, plant fruit and nut trees, and harvest wild game. Our goal is to escape the stresses of corporate life and embrace all that country living has to offer as we enter the next chapter of our lives. Follow along on our journey!

I was reading through some comments on The Kelley's Country Life and came across a comment that you made. So I thought I'd check you out. I've enjoyed your videos and look forward to seeing more as you continue to grow. I was blessed to have grown up and live my entire life with the "Country Life". I live over in south west Alabama, just an ol' country boy hunting and fishing. I love your personalities and Deb's a hoot so I see why she probably loves your father, lol! I mean that in a good way, you have a beautiful piece of property and again I look forward in watching you grow. BTW us country folk pronounce it as Ba-hay-a, lol!

Thanks Wade. Appreciate the kind words. We weren't sure about putting it all out there on KZfaq, but so far it's been a positive experience. We're trying to lay the foundation with these first few videos, so there's a lot more talking than action....that will change soon as we have more video footage of us working on recent projects. Next week, Deb is going to publish the pond video that we are really excited about sharing. Stay tuned as we get better at this! Brad&Deb

Such a beautiful spot you two are building! Thanks again for sharing! I think it's totally fine to be a homesteader without raising animals to slaughter. My friend runs his bee/chicken/goat homestead that way, he just sells the roosters and male goats that he doesn't need. He has had fantastic success with the chicken tractors too, definitely try that out and update us! 😊

Thanks. It's taking shape slowly, but it's a marathon, not a sprint. At this point, I'd say it's a 50/50 chance it will become a self sustaining farm versus a petting zoo. I don't think Deb will get attached to fish in the pond....so there's that!

Glad you found the video helpful. If you want your pasture really smooth, find a long steel I-beam and drag it across the land after you till--then seed it and cultipack it in. I didn't cultipack my bahia but we have two videos out on food plots where we use a cultipacker. We planted another bahia strip last fall to finish the pasture. Here is the link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hKune6eSxtzQhY0.html Thanks for watching. Brad&Deb

I’ve never heard to plant millet alongside the grass seed before. Sounds like a good plan, and I have rolling property (some pretty steep) so I’ll look into doing the same. I wanted to plant lespedeza first before I planted Bahia and Bermuda though
@PineyGroveHomestead

Brown top millet grows fast then dries down fast so the slow growing bahia can take hold. At least that's the theory!!

If you’ve cleared trees, then expects lots of roots to be left behind in the top layer of soil. There not “sticks”…technically, but we get you point.

I enjoyed the video. I’m researching for different reasons. I purchased this 11 acres in east Texas 3 years ago. All the pasture is Bahia. We pronounce it ba-hey-uh too. Was growing very well the first year. The last 2 years have been dry. Looking for ways to encourage more growth and plant new in areas that have been taken over by weeds. Are you fertilizing or doing anything more to encourage growth?

How long did it take for the Bahia to germinate and start to grow? I planted browntop millett and Bahia mix, the browntop came up really fast. I am about 70 days in and I dont see any bahia coming up yet. I planted August 9th.
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead Жыл бұрын
Look real close, it is TINY when it first comes up. Planted in August it probably won't really take off until the spring but it should be there now real small. We've found it fairly easy to plant around the farm except in one spot that's been planted several times. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZdxdNKinbm3ZKs.html

Very nice place you have there. My wife and I are in the process of doing the same thing. We have 10 acres in Greenhead that we are trying to plant. Do you fertilize prior to putting your seed down? And how often after that do you fertilize? Last year we put down Argentine Bahia and Brown top millet, but had erosion issues from all the rain. Want to replant in the next week or so. Also was that an L3800 tractor, that's exactly what I have.
@PineyGroveHomestead
@PineyGroveHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
We did lime after soil samples and that usually releases enough nutrients in the soil to get the bahia going. Then hit it with some nitrogen once it's up an inch tall or so. After that, fertilize every spring for the hay season. For bad erosion areas, I had to build berms with my FEL every 50' or so to prevent erosion. Then when the grass got established, I backbladed the berms down. I had an L3800HST at the time....I have a L3901HST now. L3800 is a GREAT tractor. In my tractor review video, I explain why I got rid of it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7WFoNFhx5qrkoU.html Thanks for watching. Brad&Deb

I can't believe anyone would intentionally plant bahia grass, it comes up EVERYWHERE, it's impossible to get rid of, it will be all in your bermuda grass hay field, all in your yard, it produces millions of seed. Two days after mowing your yard there will be those bahia grass seed heads sticking up ready to spread more.
@PineyGroveHomestead
