How To Care For A Dog Throwing Up? | Types Of Dog Vomit And What They Mean | Veterinarian Explains

Dogs vomit for many different reasons. Sometimes it’s really nothing to worry about, but often times vomiting is a sign of a serious underlying health problem.
Learning to tell the difference can be tricky, but it is really important as in some cases you should be able to treat it at home, but in other cases you should seek immediate veterinary care instead of attempting to resolve it yourself.
In this video, I will explain why dogs vomit, what are the types of dog vomit and what they mean, how to care for a dog throwing up at home and when you should rather take him to the vet.
The most important thing to remember is that vomiting is merely a symptom of an underlying problem. If your animal is vomiting and does not stop after a single episode, rather take him to the vet to have it checked out.

Thank you for the detailed descriptions of dog vomits. I wished I had known the yellow / foam vomit was more hazardous as my vet was dismissive until it was too late. My golden retriever was a 13-year old dog that had liver cancer. It was too late to treat her as she hid her pain well throughout the months. This was the second golden female retriever I lost from liver cancer and can’t understand why it’s considered “common” but not discussed. Same patterns of thyroid disease and progression of a larger waist line. Would love to have your input / recommendations for diet and whether raw vs cooked (e.g. boiled lean meat like chicken and duck) vs store bought debate is suitable in preventing liver cancer. I believe diet plays a key role in a dog’s health. My golden was on Royal Canin SO UTI dog food to prevent re-occurrence of UTI but I’d also give her a boiled egg and blueberries with her meals. Treats would be fresh apples and peanut butter but in small proportions.

That was really helpful. I have an accident prone chocolate lab so any info that doesn't cost me an astronomical vet bill is appreciated. He vomited more than once but is partially digested matter and not discolored. So no food for a while, water only. Except I may have him try a bit of honey cause, he's allergic to freaking chicken.

HELP EMERGENCY FOR MY DOG! so right now my dog is not feeling well at all but I'll tell you who my dog is Bluenose Brendel, brown with tiger designed fur. Human ears, he id 5. We came home yesterday and found chewed up to pieces decorative shell, it is like tree bark, not sure what it's made of but reminds me of oversized walnut shell but not as hard. Our 20 month old German shepherd has been throwing up everything she puts in her stomach now for nearly 12 hours, including water. We will fast her today and see what happens, vets have gotten crazy expensive here since covid so this girl will have to get over it on her own.

Hello my dog has popped it self in bed after a night of eating tacos with lots of chili. Now a week later she’s pooping like black tiny swirls and she threw up the past 3 night. Hey Camten. If the puppy is otherwise healthy, eating, drinking and not having any other signs of diarrhea or weakness, then it might just be that he eats too much at a time and shouldn't really be a problem. There is a parasite called Spirocerca lupi that causes a bulge in the oesophagus that can be dangerous, so if you are really concerned then best would be to take the dog to a vet for X rays to make to rule this one out.

My dog has been vomiting a clear liquid sometimes with bits of food in it after he eats, after he drinks and as soon as he wakes up, otherwise he seems active, but gets winded fast when I walk him and I can see his belly expanding and contracting as he starts panting. Also when I take him outside he just wants to eat grass. I'm taking him to vet Monday, but it is Saturday night now. I couldn't get him in Friday, but it's been going on for about a month. It stopped for a couple of days so I thought he might be getting better so I cancelled my vet appointment a week ago, but then it came back again and seems to be getting worse. His coughing, gagging, hacking and throwing up, or spitting up this clear liquid spells usually last around 3 to 4 minutes and have become more numerous through out the day so I'm just worried as hell and wish someone who knew a damn thing would tell me that this is something that's easy to fix or a common problem with an easy solution. I guess I'll have to wait til I go to the vet Monday, but I'm wrecking my mind trying to figure out what it is until then cause I know he's not feeling good.

@@jeromewatts7368 yes. He's doing fine now. I didn't believe it myself, but the problem was simply him eating too fast and too much during one sitting. All the medications and antibiotics were just upsetting his stomach more. The fix was rather simple. I just feed him very small portions of about a quarter cup at a time throughout the day of the hills science diet salmon and vegetable patee in the can and less frequently I will feed him about 7 or 8 pieces of kibble, the royal canin brand for dachshunds.

@@jeromewatts7368 there is a condition that certain dogs can get where if they eat too fast the food will get trapped in their esophagus and make it expand and it never gets time to reach the stomach before they start throwing it up again and that comes from eating too fast and is why I had to start feeding him smaller portions and it works they also have slow feeders which I never would have thought those would do anything to help but actually they this is a very serious problem that some dogs have

When the food gets trapped in their esophagus and they keep throwing it up it also can they come back into their lungs through a breathing it in and cause the lung infection so it they kind of go hand in hand which is why it is so important to just feed the dog and very little bit at a time and not to overfeed him to where he's fat in the stomach's full and he's bloated all the time he has to be you know a certain weight and a certain amount of food for him or he's just going to be sick

He also needs to take about 10mg of opremazole, generic Prilosec everyday to prevent nausea. That and the small, tiny portions, just more times a day not exceeding his recommended daily food allowance has stopped it completely, but anytime I veer from this method of feeding in the slightest he starts to revert which is why it's so important to remain diligent, because there was a time I was very concerned for him. He was lethargic, had coughing fits, throwing up, very little energy and now he's good as new

Dogtor Pete, my 3yo goldendoodle vomits his food WHOLE after many hours. Example: he'll eat at 7 pm and may vomit the next day around 9 am but the food is whole. This happens, maybe 1-2x a month. Hey Mabel. You could perhaps try putting his food in a slow feeder. It might just be that he eats too fast and then does not have enough time for the food to pass through the stomach? Otherwise next step would probably be x rays to see if there is anything suspicious causing the esophagus to continue blocking.

@@vert387 -you aren’t kidding Vert. I ended up taking my pup to the vet about 3 weeks ago to get him checked out for this issue. A hundred bucks later, I walked out without a solution. I made the decision to switch him to grain-free food and it appears it has helped.

My lab, Cookie, is about eight and went on Wednesday to the vet for her standard and rabies shots. she was well when i took her and she was happy. By Thursday, she was vomiting several times a day (it was dark and partly digested). She threw up all night and it's almost Friday...the vet is closed for Christmas now. I will try the cottage cheese or yogurt. She does not seem to want to eat anything just now and when i watch her i see how tired she is. Then she will just vomit another big pile. How long do these reactions go on?

A very similar thing is happening to my little dog right now. She threw up all that was in her stomach over the day (8 times) and I’m extremely anxious something might happen to her when i sleep. She does seem to have appetite but she’s kind of „weak“ Can you tell me how Cookie did and is doing right now? I‘m extremely worried 😞

I have 1 thing to ask since it wasn’t mentioned , my dog is projectile vomiting it happened about 3,4 times in a matter of 2 hours then stopped he also has diarrhoea (no blood in either) problem is now my other 2 dogs have the same thing ! Hi, my dog just threw up and we was going to see how he goes through the night and see if he still needs the vet tomorrow but for piece of mind... My dog has just thrown up (it’s just his ground up dog food so it’s quite thick and not very liquidy) but there are green chunks in there, like there are lime green chunks that look like rocks (they aren’t rocks but they look like rocks) and it’s sort of rubbery I believe and I have no idea what causes that. This has happened to him ones in the past ages ago, but he recovered but I’m just wondering for piece of mind what’s causing the green chunks so I can look into this further to prevent further occurrences. If you know anything quite common for causing that, that I can figure out that would be amazing.

Hey Donclancys. The problem with bones are they can sometimes be chewed into little pieces that can pass through the digestive system, but often times the bones can get stuck anywhere from the throat, stomach or intestines that can lead to an obstruction or worse a perforation (when the bone cuts through the intestines). I would recommend taking the dog to the vet for X rays just to see where the bones are lodged at and if it may pass on its own. And please stay away from feeding your dog bones :)

Hey Bashav. Milk won't unfortunately help anything. He needs to be properly examined by a vet so that he can determine what the cause could be and that treatment can be started.

I know this comment was 2 years ago now but I hope your fur baby is doing well today. You just described what my German shepherd went through for 8 months and I could not figure out what was wrong. She was 8 months old when I let her cross the rainbow bridge. She was born sleeping and brought back at birth. She was so sick but hid it well. I could not afford the tests to pin point the exact issue.

I've been feeding my male yorkie the same thing for 6 months..home cooked only dog good, I added a probiotic too. He battled tummy issues when I got him so I did research, changed his diet and he has been perfectly fine since..vet said he's perfect..until the past week, he has been vomiting yellow liquid only in the morning but he is not sick..🤔..my female yorkie is on the same diet and no issues...help?

@@aliyaharris6212 I found out it was because he needed more frequent meals..so instead of just 2 feedings a day, I split it up to 3 or 4 smaller portions and added a tums in the morning if he didn't want to eat..haven't had this problem since. ❤

Hey Priscilla. If she is showing any other symptoms such as diarrhoea or inappatence then yes you need to take her to the vet as a small puppy can easily dehydrate.

@@DogtorPete she had diarrhea but since yesterday she hasn’t thrown up or had diarrhea her poop is normal and she’s been drinking water and eating a little of her dog food. She’s a lot more active now

@@user-go3kh8pn1c Okay that is very good. She might just have had a stomach upset that seems to be resolving. Just make sure she is properly hydrated and offer her some cooked white chicken meat with white rice until she is able to eat her normal food again

My dog was de-wormed with Panacur, finishing the 3 day treatment (1 gram for every 10 lbs) 2 days ago. He has refused food since then. Any small bits we told him to eat and he begrudgingly did, he vomited. He has diarrhea from de-worming, so he is actively vomiting and has diarrhea now. He won't drink, either. We took him to vet hospital and they said they are busy and he shouldn't est or drink for another day since he vomited again. He is lethargic --- Im worried!

Well what happended is your dog okay because my dog is currently doing this after deworming as well but she also got a vaccine a few days prior too!

@@matthewlee8618 I'm glad you asked. It was actually Parvo, and was completely unrelated to the de-worming. It took months and several thousand dollars, but thankfully, we were able to save all of our dogs and puppies. I will be praying for your pup. Keep watch of fluid intake. Squeeze the scruff of their neck to make sure he/she is not dangerously dehydrated. You dog may need subcutaneous fluids to feel better.

@@matthewlee8618 You can fight it at home, if you have saline fluids and can administer them. I happened to have a close friend who is an in-home care nurse, so she supplied the fluids and needles, and it was hell, but I was able to save (with God's help), all FIVE of my dog's 5 week old puppies.

@@AngelCruz-kp4of It is quite common for young puppies to vomit once or twice and then go on as if everything is okay. They are very inquisitive (and sometimes a bit stupid) and will sniff and lick at everything which can cause an upset tummy that usually resolves on its own. If she starts showing any symptoms like diarrhoea or lethargy it becomes very serious and should be taken to the vet sooner rather than later.

1. MY dog can vomit if he eats too fast, 2. if he goes with out eating until late in the day. (My dog eats 2 main meals per day some treats in between- 3.sometimes he doesn't want his first meal . When he eats later without 1st meal -he could possibly throw up. 4. Also, If he would eat Too much food at once he could possibly throw up. 5. We are mindful of what he eats - don't quickly switch the kind of food, that a dog eats.- any food switching must be done in VERY gradual amounts - 6. don't let any soft food sit out long . - 7. don't feed right after play or exercise, how much he eats, 8. don't let the dog go too long without his meal,, -9 again, may need to feed smaller amounts more often. 10. Have calmness around the dogs meal time.
