Just a few quick notes:1) I promise that Mr. Pirate gets LOTS of shoulder rides. I will let him up on my shoulder in videos more often. Maybe make a 2 hr compilation of "Mr. Pirate's most satisfying shoulder rides".2) I don't recommend any specific brush other than "the one your cat likes". It make take a some experimentation to find it.3) Parts 2 and 3 are coming. I had 4 male cats and whenever it came to the month of February they disappeared and never came back. So I gave up having cats. This is normal ?

He seemed pretty old to me. This was actually what I was expecting. I met a 20 year old cat. You can really tell by the slow and determined way they move.

That's why he's patient, he's slow and long in the tooth. Cats can live much longer than that, depending if they're house cats or allowed outside. Cats who wander age faster. A house cat can love 23-25 years+

Oh yes, Mr. Pirate is a shoulder cat! Over the years, I've moved on from being a seven year old with her first kitten to a devoted old cat lady, and love your videos. I learn new things every time. Thank you so much indeed.

Senior kitties are the greatest. My husband and I have made a conscious decision to always adopt super seniors from local shelters. It means that we’ve had to say goodbye to some amazing kitties, but knowing they were loved in their last year(s) makes the pain of losing them a bit easier to deal with. But make no mistake, every cat that walks through our door is very deeply loved.

My cat's name was Mr. Flea, because when my daughter found and rescued him from outside, he was a tiny kitten, injured and covered in fleas. We loved him and had him for 9 years, until he died from cancer. We still feel sadness over his loss, even though it was 40 years ago.

My baby is eight years old and it broke my heart to buy him his "mature" formulated food. I hope I take very good care of him as the years go by, he's done the same for me since I got him at nine weeks old ❤️

Don't stress! Think of the mature food as an insurance policy and remember that cats and dogs do not age in a linear manner, meaning that barring any bad luck with major illness, you'll have a kitten for years to come :-).

Let's do! It is called "Iris atrophy" a benign, age related change. His eyes started off green and have been developing golden flakes since he was about 10.

I love Mr. Pirate! The doctor is great too (obviously). I laughed when he reminded Mr. Pirate to look at the audience. The doc has such a pleasant voice and is so caring toward his furry friends and clients.

I’ve had my cat Misty since she was a kitten and since I was very young. She’s now 15 (she celebrated her birthday a few weeks ago!) and for the past few years she made yelping noises when she yawned and struggled to eat, resulting in her losing weight. She has severe anxiety problems so was hell to take her to the vets, but after 2 teeth ops to remove all her teeth she is a completely different cat! She’s so happy and loves to eat, so much so that she has put on weight! We love her and she purrs so often❤️ The only thing we have noticed the past few months is the fact that Misty is appearing to be a little senile, with meowing to be let out the front, then wanting to be let back in moments later, and meowing to be let out again constantly. Also she has had many accidents in the kitchen and sometimes misses her litter trays, which are placed around the house for her. She sleeps on my bed every night and keeps me warm ❤️

In our home, kitty brushing time is pure bliss. We just hold up the slicker and Sophia come trotting over, flops on her back, puts her paws over her head and wants her belly brushed. She loves having her arm pits brushed, too. She's 20 and such a good, sweet girl. I tell her she's Grade A #1 Pussy Cat....that's the highest grade of kitty. She's also the proud recipient of the Best Kitty Ever Ever Ever Award. Few kitties get the Triple Ever Award. 💜😺 She's spoiled but we wouldn't have it any other way. 💗

Great tips! We have a 21-year-old Norwegian Forest Cat and a 14-year-old Abyssinian/Burmese kitty, and they both need help in the grooming department. With the Wegie, we have to just set aside time once every few weeks to shave all the little mats because her fur is so fine, and tangles so easily even with brushing every day. They both love to be brushed. We also wet a washcloth with warm water, squeeze it out, and just wipe them down a few times a week. They don't mind since they get to lay on the heating pad afterward while we dry and brush them.

Really a bittersweet experience watching this video as I had to have my beloved 19 year old cat Kelvin, a black and white part-Siamese, put to sleep on 24 October. He had progressive kidney disease but was still eating well and was very active and affectionate right up to a sudden collapse which the vet thought might have been due to a neurological event or blood clot. It broke my heart to say goodbye to him but he was also losing his sight and hearing and, given his age and underlying health conditions, the vet felt he was most unlikely to make a significant recovery. I inherited him from my elderly neighbour who couldn't take him with her when she went into sheltered accommodation and I had three of the most wonderful years of companionship and fun with a lovely, friendly pet, as well as the four years I had him as a neighbour. It's lovely to see Pirate looking so well and nice to have Dr Yuri back from his travels!

I miss my geriatric kitty! We got her when she was 12 and her grooming had already gone downhill. I loved brushing her long fur, it was so soft. She even let me brush her belly. She didn't like to be brushed by anyone else.

I work at a shelter and we had two of our oldest healthiest cats to come in at 16 and 18 years old. Very well loved and handsome gentleman who's owners unfortunately died, but clearly cared for them immensely. The 18 year old has the loudest purr motor I've ever heard. Will be posting a video soon, but my phones camera doesn't capture sound or video very well at all Some of the sweetest cats. Always happy to see you and approach for some love and attention .

Dr Burstyn, I found your series on geriatric cats right before Christmas 2018 and was surprised but also motivated by your recommendation for wet food. My 15 year old outdoor cat seemed spry and happy, so I enjoyed surprising her with a few days of wet food over the holidays. She ate it heartily but when I purchased more canned food suddenly she would not eat - quite concerning. Our kitty enjoyed Christmas and then In a fast downward spiral of kidney disease, we ended up having to put her down a few days later. As you say in this series, they go to huge lengths to mask pain and change. Since you started me thinking about watching my cat more carefully, I know we avoided a longer and more drawn out suffering process. And she got a few days of canned cat food! She had a long good life and was released not a moment too soon. I wish I had monitored more carefully (the kidney disease was a surprise) and if I ever get another cat I surely will. Thank you and Mr Pirate is such a cutie.

My cat is only 3 (and only been with us for about 4 months!) so I am still learning a lot about how to be a good cat parent, but I love how this video focused on preventative healthcare. I want to make sure he is healthy in years to come by being diligent now. Also, Mr. Pirate is a true gem!

Thanks Dr. My kitty is Rugby. He is ten. He was throwing up & pooing out of his box. I groom him 10 minutes every day. And I changed his food to sensitive digestion. He loves and no more throwing up.

My cat is 6 years old, so it was time for him to start school. We've been at it for a few month with mathematics, practicing 1 dead bird vs 0 dead birds. He's not making major progress, so we have move on to reading. I've tried to make him read C-A-T out loud, but so far he just says "meehh" and purrs. We've got plenty to work on.

Our boys are just coming up 13 yo. Socko is an indoor cat mostly while his bro/ litter-mate, Wilber, lives outdoors through the spring, summer and autumn. He is a tabby and Socrates is grey and white and they both hate the annual visit to the vet, despite his being a cat lover and an all-around fine vet. Socks does a Spidercat impression by wedging himself in the carry box and attempting to stay in it while his bro steps out loaded for bear, though a vet will do if there are no bears *>) Vet Jonathan, however, is a master of squidge and it's never got out of hand. It's a bit like visiting a doctor here, there's little chance of a chat about long-term issues, which is why we value your presentations so much. Our Shasha a calico cat is going to be 24 this coming January. It's hard to believe she still going, but she is. Her mind is clear, knows how to do her tricks for treats without us encouraging her (she reminds us). She sleeps more often, is supper skinning, eats like a lioness & generally in great health considering her age. To think she's only been to the vet twice, once to get fixed or the other time to get her initial shots. We had another one who lived 16 years, & another 12 years. Our beloved Duff Duff lived only 12 years was an outdoor cat & believed a nasty neighbor left poison in cat food that killed our beloved Duff, but karma got her at the end, when her dog suddenly died & she died herself of dementia. We never wished anything bad to happen to anyone, but this old bat had it coming. Anyway, there's a special hell for anyone who prey on innocent animals. Our Maximush is turning 11, he's the baby & is also the cutest American silver shorthair kitty cat 🐈

Love your videos, I did have two male cats at one time one passed away at the ages of 20 and the other one was almost 22 they where well loved and are still missed today. But know we have a beautiful female 6 yr old fur baby.

I'm back and I certainly will! Hoping to have a trailer of my trip ready for next week :-). It's very different from my vet advice since all shot in the field (or a field) so I hope people like it.

My 15 year old girl had an enlarged heart and passed away because of an embolism in January. Although we knew she was ill, her death came relatively sudden. It took some time, but we've adopted a 7 month old kitten now and hope she lives at least equally as long!

It's nice to see a video that genuinely seems interested in the cats welfare (aaart rom no shoulder......) rather then some which are possibly for entertainment only.

Thank you so much for this! Of my four cats three turned 8 this year. Starting January they are seeing their vet much more often than they have been. I've had them all since kittens, I'm not ready for them to be old kitties!! 😭
