Medically speaking, cats used to become “senior” around 9 years old. The age has since been moved up to 11. It’s just like pregnant women 35 and over are considered “geriatric pregnancies”, even though obviously a 35 year old is not geriatric, or humans being considered “seniors” when they’re 55-65. It doesn’t mean they’re going to die tomorrow, lol. You can live 30 years past then. It’s just the terminology. You’re lucky your cat lived to 20. While that isn’t exactly rare, I’d say the majority don’t live that long.

When you rescue a cat which is elderly and has spent their entire life living on the streets they are so thankful to be given a home. It's like they are so appreciative at you for rescuing them and providing them with the things they had to fight for all their life; safe and warm places to sleep, food that won't make you sick, cars that might hit you when you cross the road.... all gone and swapped for a loving human and due to that you are basically the centre of the universe in the eyes of the cat.

Hi, can anybody advise me please? I just moved to this new place, it's a hotel but i have a room here since my husband works here. We renovated the inside and have 2 rooms joined together like a tiny apartment. 7 months ago or so i saw that there is a small family of cats living nearby and coming to eat from the trash at night. I started leaving them food and slowly slowly they got used to me and started coming to even our door. It's a female cat with probably her male kitten, I think now he's a little over a year old and there's his dad too. Some time ago I noticed the female kitty is pregnant. At that time she was already coming inside for an hour maybe the most. The other two were afraid to come in more than a few steps. Then 3 weeks after she gave birth she brought the kittens to the shelter i made in front of our door a long time ago. It was very stormy at that time. It's a litter of four, one boy only. Since then I've been taking care of them outside but when they grew bigger and started spending time outside of their box people started getting interested in them (it's a hotel). it happened TWICE already that somebody took one and we had to "rescue" him. A few days ago we took them in, we had no other choice, people would keep "kit-napping" them. We can't really have cats inside but i tried my best to make it a good place for them. 2 days ago i FINALLY trained them to use litter box. And surprisingly the mom cat started using it too even though we let her out multiple times a day. So that's the situation right now: the kittens are now almost 6 weeks old, don't want to go outside. Their mom also wants to stay indoors now and learned on her own to use a litter box. The dad cat and the young male started coming in for longer periods of time (dad for 15 minutes or more even) and are more comfortable exploring the apartment. They rely completely on us feeding them and in the evening and night they usually hang out somewhere close. We're trying to convince our friends (whom we trust) to adopt all 4 kittens because we can't keep them. We can't afford a cat and everything that comes with it for so many years. Besides soon my elder dog is coming back to me. So here's my question - should i take the adult cats to the animal shelter so that they can get spayed/neutered, vaccinated and all (we can't afford that) and adopted or just let them live outside? We might move to a completely new place in a few months or a year the most so I don't know what to do. They seem not to be so wild anymore and the mom cat seems to be an indoor cat already and demands love and pets. Should i take only her to animal shelter? But they live together as a family and at the shelter they told us they'll most likely be separated if they take all of them. And i don't know how long it might take for especially the dad to be adopted. He's independent, doesn't like closed places and to be touched (only by me sometimes). I dont want to take away his freedom and put him in a cage for months and then MAYBE, just maybe be adopted by a person who'll be patient and nice enough. He might be a bit older already, I don't know. What should i do????????

@@Magda_7396 Try finding a local no kill shelter, most of the time they take strays or feral animals and vaccinate/neuter and spay them and release them back into the wild humanely. if that doesn't work just have your best wishes that they'll survive through natural instinct. Sadly we would all love to save street kitties and give them a better opportunity but we all also don't have the income or the time to deal with every special case. All in all, try your best or what your heart wants.

We had 4 rescues at once, all totally different personalities. One was a male coon cat who just made his way into our hearts. We were at least the third home for this guy. Although I do appreciate all this kind person has done, I myself wouldn't have waited 2 years to bring him inside. I really don't agree with releasing them after they're neutered. It's a very sad existence for them. Between predators, disease and starvation most cats are lucky to live a year outside. They're not wild animals, they or their parents were once somebody's pet.
@ricericericericericericeri5762
@ricericericericericericeri5762 Жыл бұрын
@@syd2123 Not all stray cats were someone's pet, especially if you live in the city, there's lots of feral stray cats that were born outside that are not socialized at all, would not make a good pet nor would they want to be trapped inside with a human. However, they still deserve to be vaccinated, especially when you can do so for cheap at the Humane Society (if you live near one), and they need to be fixed or else your neighborhood will become overpopulated with cats, and eventually someone will end up calling animal control and then there's a lot of cats in the pound on death's row because not many are willing to adopt an unsocialized cat. This is not the case for Toup, he's so friendly he probably was an abandoned pet, but there are definitely cats that are 100% wild animals and sometimes trap, neuter, release is the best you can do for them. Fostering is expensive and not everyone is able to go that far.

@@Claudia-lq3ns agreed, I definitely am going to make it a point to adopt some senior animals once I have room in my home. I can understand someone not wanting to face the heartache of getting attached and then losing them sooner than a young pet. But I would hope just knowing you gave them a loving home in their final years would bring some comfort. Plus honestly in many ways they’re less trouble because they’ve usually gotten the bratty, destructive behavior younger animal behavior out of their system. Except if you’re my dog, he’s 17 and still gives me hell on a daily basis. 😂 as much as he drives me insane sometimes I’m glad he’s still spry enough to keep me on my toes. I’m so glad you came into Harvey’s life and gave him a good forever home, I’m sure he was so grateful after 5 long years at the shelter. This reminded me how my beloved cat Daisy was more on outdoor cat and every summer was hard to think about when she went to the woods and stayed there for like 1-3 months at times Of course i went to look my baby girl, sometimes never hearing any sound and just prayed from bottom of my heart that she would be ok Few summers later Daisy was pregnant and i suspected that she met neighbors male cat what i never saw but non the less we decided to help her get babies to world then neuter her later After neutering, i had to go the military service and i left Daisy to my parents house After 2 weeks, she became BIG and THICK, normally i always remembered her as just bone and skin, tried feed her all time best of ability but after neuter, she was totally different cat and started to be too old to adventure outside woods, She is now 15 years old and going still hard and maybe lives longer than expected And she wont leave my side when ever i come from work or be at home doing something, play or just watching tv or do dishes, she will be always there near me, of course i will love her all times, from morning to night, she sleeps with me every night She is my special girl

His story reminds me of my old cat Minschy. My sister saved him, when someone bound him a band to tight around his neck. Afterwards he came to our balcony every day, to say hello and maybe get some food. When fall came, we noticed he was getting thinner and had no home, so we bought him a catloo (igloo for cats) and made him a comfy home on our balcony and gave him food on a regular basis. After a year he moved in with us. He was a sweet and special boy. I still miss him every day.😻💕

I hate it when one of my cats meows loudly for food. She can see it's coming but she just cries more insistently. My other one is very observant and sits very quitely and checks if I've noticed he's being a good boy. So cute! The first one was starving when I got her and she thinks every meal is a question of survival. It's distress crying that she does. It's getting a bit less insistent now after a good 5 years of this. But sweetly she nudges me a thank you on my arm before starting to eat. Cuuuute or what?

What a great story! I moved into a trailerpark in February of 2022. I noticed that there were several cats just roaming around outside. I had had cats all my life, and had my latest one since he was a kitten from 2012. My mom always taught me to be kind to animals, so, last summer I made an effort to try and entice some of them to at least come up to me, and finally to come inside. I left a window open without a screen (yeah, I know that was risky). I knew that when the winter would come that they would be cold. Finally, I had one who would come in to eat. Then, I had another. Then, I had a third. They all got along with my older Taz cat. He was such a cool cat. He passed in March. I still have these other little furry babies who keep me entertained and feeling loved.

@@bear4pozcle Yeah, mine were both grown and one had been a mother. When you have an older cat that's anti social it's much harder to gain their trust and socialise them. The mother was emaciated when she was rescued. It takes time and watching their cues and also trying tricks like lying down on the floor so they will feel emboldened to approach you. I slept on the floor for 4 nights before the mother would come out and interact. Most people can't be bothered.

We took in a stray back last fall that we'd been feeding for awhile. He's an old feller also, and we feared he wouldn't make it thru the winter without some help. So, we scooted him inside a crate and brought him home. He looks very much like Toup. Our feller's name is Junx. Such sweet kitties. I'm so glad these elderly fellers will live the rest of their lives in safety and well taken care of.

Junx is a great name for a cat! Same goes for Toup. I have a cat named Pepper (Pep for short) who had been abandoned with a litter of kittens. She was rescued by a friend of mine, who found homes for her and all the kittens. Originally, Pep was housed along with the one boy kitten named Ralph. When Ralph grew up, he became a bully towards her. He was pampered and never knew the harsh reality of scavenging for food. Pep had been rescued only to then be forced to deal with an entitled brat. So the decision was made to find a new human for her, and she has been living her best life ever since.

AMEN, to that! CATS DO NOT NEED TO BE OUTSIDE!! I preach that to ANYONE, & EVERYBODY that I know, or I overhear someone mention they have an outdoor cat. I’ve ran into some people who just don’t “get it”. As far as strays, who aren’t socialized? People will say that you can’t tame a stray/feral cat. YES, YOU CAN!! It takes a lot of time, & commitment…but, it can be done!! I volunteer at a few shelters around my area…I’ve seen A LOT of absolutely “heartbreaking” things…I SEE the toll of being outside cats, or stray cats is. It’s AWFUL(beyond words)!! I also foster cats, & kittens. If they don’t get adopted? I keep them until they are. I take rescue horses, rehab them..I work with a lot of Mustangs, too. Shelters are soooo full right now! I’m blessed to have A LOT of room. I have a cat house😸. A LOT of work, but, it’s worth EVERY second!
