I keep mine in a west facing window. I water when she is dry and wipe the leaves at least every 2 weeks (or put it in the shower). I just started getting new growth after months of owning (2 new leaves in winter too). I started fertilizing when I noticed new growth. Never lost any leaves yet (knock on wood). It's a gorgeous plant. Definitely a favourite atm.

I'm so envious of all your winter sun! Here near Seattle, we're lucky to get one sunny day a week. I'm supplementing with lots of grow lights, but they're nothing compared to direct sunlight. My ficus are doing OK, but not nearly as much growth as yours. Love your little Tineke forest in a pot.

We have cold winters and hot summers....I am definitely appreciative of the sunlight and figure it is a trade off for the winter cold. We are one of the sunniest places in all of Canada.

Mine is actually in a north facing window and is perfectly happy. Granted, it's only about 18" from the window. I'm growing mine like a single stem tree. I don't fertilize yet, but I potted it about 6 months ago, and I had worm castings in the mix. It's spits out new leaves one right after the other. Hello. Beautiful specimen you have there and great video. I have three variety of ficus but the Tineke is my favourite (Got myself 2 specimen 🤨). They are between 3 to 4 feet tall from the bottom of the pot to the top. Mines grow very well and are kept a couple of feet from a South-East facing Window and are planted in a well draining soil with a lot of wood chips in the mix. I let them dry completely before watering. I’ve had some spider mites infestations in the past the most recent one was this summer. However, I was lucky enough to catch them early. Have you heard of the ficus shivereana? Stunning one. I Have not seen it yet in person and cannot wait to get my hands on one.

Super helpful video! How often would you water this type of plant? How can you tell if not getting enough water. Thanks so much!
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Madison! The watering amount and frequency depends on a lot of factors like pot size, amount of light, soil and etc. This large one I let get bone dry for about a week then I soak it under it comes out the drain hole and don't water again until its dry for a week. Some people might water more often then this, but for me it usually works out to be maybe 2 weeks between watering....approx. Don't let it get too dry to where the leaves feel thin or fragile....avoid that LOL Does this help? And again if you have it in a small pot or in a really heat location you may be watering every week or even a few days. When I have taken my jade plants outside in the summer, with the heat and light, they may need water every couple days. When I have them inside they get watered approx every 2 weeks in the summer and like once a month in the winter....

My first winter with this plant i did lose some bottom leaves i was told it can be normal and bottom leaves for some reason not as firm and sturdy there more delicate and not much variegations. I think maybe is normal too. I notice rubber plants they can have that crystalline bead looking on the leaves does that got to do with the water you give them?

It is no guarantee, but sometimes pruning the top (apical bud) can promote or encourage branching and leaf grow lower in the plant....it activates below. If you were to prune for this reason (again no guarantee) then I would only attempt this in spring or summer months when the plant is actively growing. I have only done this to my fiddle leaf fig.....

Can you propagate and replant in the same pot as the existing plant without putting in water i.e. cut off a stem and plant it straight back into the same pot?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
I've never soil propagated a ficus elastica directly into soil, but it is possible. If you do then I would recommend potting it in a separate pot to start with. You will probably need to keep the prop cutting well watered to entice those roots and if it was in the same pot as the mother plant most likely it wouldn't tolerate being in wet soil before it gets root rot. One needs to stay most while the mother plant likes to dry out completely. I think you chance of success would be very low

This plant is a bit fussy when the soil stays wet or retains moisture for too long. Most likely those spots are due to a watering issue. Make sure it has a good well draining soil. I use a tropical plant soil mix and add in a bunch of extra perlite to help with drainage. I water this plant until it comes out the bottom of the drain hole and let it dry out completely. I often use a bamboo skewer to stick into the soil to make sure the bottom of pot/soil is dry before I water it again. I hope this helps.

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
I often think that when a plant isn't doing anything above the soil, stuff is happening below the soil.....ie root growth to sustain growth it is about to produce. If it's still healthy then I wouldn't worry too much. One thing that slows plant growth is less then adequate....so maybe it needs more light. Ficus plants need a lot of bright light and even can take some direct sunlight when acclimated. So maybe try a bit more light to help it photosynthesis

I moved it a bit closer to the window, south facing, but still not indirect sun. It started dropping in tact, great looking leaves, a few at a time & always at night. Tried to propagate, it failed. Now all the leaves are gone, except one but it's hanging & shriveled. even though I increased the light again. & made sure it wasn't getting too much or too little water. I thought I was doing everything right & for awhile it was thriving. Can it still be saved? If so, how? Even if not, what do you think happened? I have one like that too....I just leave it, but if you really don't like the way it looks, then snip it off.

I don't overwater my tineke and it's by my south window but not too close. The state of my plant is that the stem is leaning over, dried brown spots on the edges of the leaves, drooping and dried leaves. Please help I don't know what's wrong with it. Thanks! 🙏🙌💜

I had to tie mine together as the tineke was leaning as well. You can add a temporary support stake to help prop it up. As for the leaves....I currently have a leaf the has brown spots on it. It is one of the lower leaves on the stem. I'm not concerned about those ones dropping.

do u let the sap dry out before sticking it into water? how many months during spring/summer until it's ready to transplant into soil (approx)?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
Normally I don't let it dry out. I just stick it right in water. Make sure it's in a bright area and I would think and probably 3-4 weeks you should have some roots
