Thinking how to get a Bushy Rubber plant (Ficus Elastica) without pruning? Here in this video, I have shared a very simple trick to FORCE Rubber plant to branch out without pruning. By pruning, of course we can make Rubber plant Bushy and I already have a detailed video here - • My SECRETS To Make RUB...
Even if your Rubber plant is not growing well or there is no any new growth, try this and I am sure, you would get the desired result.
PLEASE NOTE - This can be applied on any plants including vines too. We get much faster result if we do on vines. Do it with vines if you want to control their growth.

I'm so happy that I stumbled across this video!! I was just wondering what to do with my fiddle leaf fig and my rubber trees since they were just growing straight up and it made me cringe to even think about cutting them because they were almost dead when I got them and it's been a long road to get them where they are now. For example, my FLF was bought on clearance for 1.99 because it was basically a stick with two leaves on it. Now it's got at least twenty leaves and it's doing great! So I'm definitely going to try this method rather than pruning her back! Thank you!!!

Im gonna try this. My elastica has not grown at all since i got it last summer. Now it has two big leaves that are hanging straight down along side the stem after the other 7 fell off one by one about 1 a month. Thanks so much for this Vidio so glad it came up in my notifications. Have definatly subscribed and nice one for the subtitles. Helps alot.

I just laid it on the floor as it grew 8ft tall and was falling down every now and then due to wind. After keeping it laid down on the floor for 2 weeks it gave side branches automatically. (To be noted that I watered it regularly though by making it stand)

Thank you so much for this technique!! I pruned my rubber plant 4-5 months ago and it hasn't grown at all since; instead it actually lost some of the bottom leaves :( Now with the weather turning warmer in the southern hemisphere, I'm hoping it will revive and branch. Could you share any tips on reviving the plant? Thanks in advance!

I also saw this video sometime last year and thought it was worth a shot. I wish you could upload images in the comments. I had combined a Ficus Aurdey with me Elasticia and since i wanted to keep them together I followed your example and bent them both in almost a complete upside down "U" and anchored them to wooden skewers (like for the grill) I took a photo on 6/13/23 and some in between to record the results and finally the end date was 10/13/23 and the results were amazing. The best thing was that i didn't have any trouble straightening them out. The bending was not permanant.

Great Video and very interesting to make the plant busy. I have a very large plant in a pot outside (Western Australia) lots of sun therefore growing very high with some branches sparse of leaves. Pruning has resulted in more lower leaves, happy with this. My concern is how to keep the plant a reasonable size (currently two (2) meters high) and busy as it a main feature of my entry. Will pruning the top cause the plant to be root bound. Thank you. I enjoy your videos and great advise on rubber plants.

From my bonsai knowledge, I believe those bending create small cracks on the trunk that stimulates branching out. And also of course like you said the tree is looking for more light & growing upward.

Auxin induces shoot apical dominance. The axillary buds are inhibited by auxin, as a high concentration of auxin directly stimulates ethylene synthesis in lateral buds, causing inhibition of their growth and potentiation of apical dominance. When the apex of the plant is removed, the inhibitory effect is removed and the growth of lateral buds is enhanced. Auxin is sent to the part of the plant facing the light, and this promotes growth towards that direction.

So this has similar aspects in it to Bonsai methods. Makes perfect sense. Have a ? Do you twist the plant the opposite direction to get new growth encourage on they other side so the plant is fairly symmetrical all around or does the plant spout on bottom side that is shaded and then correct its self when you return the plant to the upright position? Hope this ? Makes sense. Thanks 😊
@GardeningUpbeat
@GardeningUpbeat 2 жыл бұрын
@Debbie Fox, You are 100% correct 😊 Mostly used in Bonsai..and even on Adenium too to force them to produce more branches. Twisting is not necessary..or else the stem might break. Actually, kept the growing point facing west (as there is a wall just behind the plant) This way, it had to produce new growth which can get more light from east side. But anyway, doing exactly same like me is not necessary (like, keeping behind a wall and facing to west). All plants would produce new growth because of their natural growing habit. If I cut the rope, it would correct itself in coming days. For that, I would just need to make sure that it's getting light from all side. If it's not possible, we can just adjust the location of the plant based on the direction of the light. All plants always bend in case there is a wall behind it and light is coming from other side. I hope, I have answered your question..if somehow I got it wrong, please let me know. Thank you!

I saw some massive rubber trees in mexico this year and most of the branches actually point downwards but they don’t branch out. So I think you damaged the stem which is causing the growth lower down. Interesting technique though! Are you planning to straighten the plant back up or will you be pruning the top once the new shoots fill in more? I’d love to see an update in a few months. Thanks for sharing

Ficus have dormant buds in each node. Move your tree outside in the summer and it will usually backbud without much fuss. The reason rubber trees get leggy is we starve them for light by keeping them inside.

Can confirm, I live in a area where we get cold winters, but this summer, I put my rubber fig outside. After letting it adjust to direct sunlight, It started to bud EVERYWHERE on the trunk! I have like 4 new branches now and it produced beautiful big leaves. I can recommend everyone to put their houseplants outside if possible. Houseplants? More like "winter houseplants".

Great video! Is it possible to achieve such results even if the stem still has leafs or should I remove some and then try to bend it? I have my rubber plant for almost 4 years now, unfortunately it has only one stem. Tried your other method last year (by pruning the top part) unfortunately my plant just kept growing as usual, haha.

Glad you liked it and thank you so much for your feedback. Sure, it is possible and please avoid removing the leaves. You can bend the stem without even removing any leaves. Again, sorry to hear that Pruning didn't work out for you. Normally it does if all goes well (need hard pruning). Anyway, sometimes plants just like to behave in their own way..he he..and don't grow like we want. I have pruned many of my Rubber plants (including the one I have shown in last year's video) again and soon I would share the result. Thank you!
