I have a finial shell to carve and went to you to have a look. Just an excellent primer for beginners and a reminder to anyone else how clean a carving can be yet look elegant. Thanks for your instruction. Bill in Los Angeles.

Fantastic work! Simple and easy to follow. If possible, could you provide a link to the template you used for this carving. Much thanks.

Thank you for this video, what size is that and which way is the grain running, or does that make no difference?

I loved your video! I am trying to learn how carve; I am vey interested in relief carving. I have bought several chisels, a V tool, a vainer, a #1,#5,#3,#9 and would like your opinion on choosing chisel sizes and shapes and what is the thickness of the wood you used in carving the shell. What thickness is generally used for relief carving and can wood that is glued too make a larger or thicker piece be carved?

588158 Hi, the wood is about 20mm thick. email me on gerald@adamswoodcarving and I will try to answer all you questions. Thanks for your enthusiasm! Gerald

I think it's European Lime.

i'm new to the carving game but i'm gonna attempt this. The only problem i see myself having is cutting against the grain. I bought some lime wood recently but on chipping at it, parts of it exploded into splinters and i spent the next 30 minutes shaving it down so it looked nice again. hmm

Hi Emilia, sorry for late reply, just worked out how to do the technology! The shell is glued onto a backing board with newspaper and PVA glue. Sticks solid, then comes off easily with a sharp knock at the join. Do try to take it up again. Gerald

Hi Dan man, The secret is sharp tools and don't take too much off in one go. Practice the slicing cuts I talk about in the video. Keep at it and enjoy!
