Lovely wood, great sharp knife and a lot of skill = beautiful result. Let's not forget the hard work of Zed in producing a catalogue of really useful and interesting videos. It's particularly useful when Zed asks his guests the sort of questions that a complete novice like me would want to ask. Some things are only obvious once explained. So thanks for that, and keep fighting the corner of us beginners. I've just made my first spoon. It looks like a stick that my dog's chewed. Early days though, I suppose. Thanks guys. Greetings from Scotland 👍🔪 Subscribed!

Another awesome spoon carving video. Just stellar! Aarons work is some of my favorite on Instagram. I cannot wait for the coffee scoop. I have always revered his scoops. I really like seeing him use the axe he did. It is not a $500 specialty custom axe. It looks like he could take that out bushcrafting, process wood, and still craft a thing of beauty. I think this really exemplifies bushcraft (I don't know what axe it is, just what it looks like to me). Thank you for doing these @zedoutdoors. I keep watching your spoon carving series over and over and will keep watching. I just wish I could thumb up every time I watch.

Zed, yet again another great video, Aaran certainly is a dab hand at this carving lark. Brilliant bit of work on his part expertly executed. His sraight knife is a beauty, hand forged. He does mention the makers name, I have checked his website but, yep you guessed it, out of stock :-(( I know there are other knives out there, but i think if I'm honest I definitely have a bit of a passion for the hand forged knife, they seem to be far superior to the sort of mass product. A nice long blade, something i am looking for as i am 6'6" with hands like shovels, and I think /feel that a blade that is that little bit longer gives you much greater scope in your knife work. Great film Sir thank you. Hoping to hear from the knife creator. Nice one Aaron. All the best Les.

@@aarongarrett4184 thanks very much fir the information. It appears that the extra length aids in sweeping cuts to level the bowl of the spoon. I am going to watch this again for other possible advantages.

That's gotta be one of Ashworths occasional 10cm blades. No way that's just a few mm longer than the 106. AshandIron if you're interested.

So I have a little bit different question for you. I’m just setting up getting ready to start carving. I’ve ordered a carving axe recommended by Andreea Grad and a bunch of other tools I’ve seen used by folks on your site. I’m getting ready to set up a chopping block and am wondering what a good height might be. Im 5’7” and would like one that is comfortable and safe to use. Thanks

Generally the hieght of the chopping block should be around waist high when you're standing up. I hope to film a tutorial on making a chopping block moving forward as it is a topic I have not covered yet ~Peace~

I’ve watched this a few times now, or parts of, and a question I have is ‘how old is the wood that Aaron used in this video?’ I have started carving, mostly with very green wood, perhaps too green if that is possible. My axe cuts aren’t as good or precise but I understand that. My thinking is the wood perhaps needs a little ageing - months?
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
The wood being very green is no problem at all, in fact the greener it is the better. Getting precise axe cuts is really all about technique and the sharpness of the axe, so thats where I would suggest you work on. You don't want to let the wood age at all, the more you do the more it seasons and becomes harder to carve ~Peace~

Nice video - did he happen to mention how fresh that wood was that he used? I am often using more dried wood as that is what I can get my hands on.
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, the wood in this instance was pretty fresh. Ideally you want to carve with freshly cut wood, but the reality is that you carve with whatever it is you can get a hold of ~Peace~

What does burnishing mean and involve?
@Zedoutdoors
@Zedoutdoors 4 жыл бұрын
It's similar to burnishing leather where you use a pebble, antler, etc with a smooth edge and rub it along the surface of the spoon in short bursts so it creates heat and flattens the surface ~Peace~
