I've had a Penn multiplier reel for around 30 years now. I haven't used it for the last 5 as I never really mastered it. Yes, I have spent a lot of time undoing birds nests instead of fishing.... Watching your video has motivated me to get it out again and use your much needed tips. Absolutely wonderfully made video. Thank you..

Early Penn multipliers were a disaster! Modern multipliers are vastly superior to those, with braking devices second to none. ABUs, Daiwa 7ht or SLOSH. All great reels but use thick oil in the bearings to slow them down. Use 15lb mainline and 60lb leader. PRACTISE on the beach first. I've been using Multipliers for over 50 years NEVER USED ANYTHING ELSE. Good luck!

I absolutely love this video. So many people make an honest attempt to teach and explain a certain concept of a subject and get lost quite often after the first sentence. This video is spot on to the very end. It has caused me to try a new concept to me, that I would not have tried otherwise. And because of this I have found a new way for me to enjoy this ancient art. Thank You My Friend

Good video. Just a couple of points. I use muti`s because they are compact and I can cast much further than a fixed spool because of the grip on the spool. Set up is vital ,tapered leader also. The levelling reels never really affected my distance. What I would say regarding distance is so many think a longer rod is better. I use a 10ft stiff rod with my set up and comfortably get over 200yds. It`1s like golf! you want distance ,you need a stiff shaft and good technique. Also , multi`s can be dodgy at night! You kinda need to see the weight and the splash to judge finger pressure on the spool.

I've used multipliers since the 70's. Once you get the braking adjusted and the cast smooth and not jerky you will never get birds nests. I have 10 multipliers and can't remember the last time I had a backlash. All set up to run smoothly and cast perfectly. Takes time patience and PRACTISE! 😊😊

I want to say thank you both for the time and effort you put into your videos. My dad gave me the love of fishing that I've held for 50 years. G your love is obvious, your son and fishing(wife too, saw her fingers once:-). Thanks for keeping it alive. Oh and yes, I watch All of them (multiple times) and learn something every time. No detail is to small. One day soon I will again stop in the UK. It will be a highlight to visit one of your featured locations and definitely one of your co-stars(Tony's Tackle or the Scooby-do 2 as examples). Their time and effort is well noted. Lastly, the new youngsters featured(boat Captains and match fishermen) on your shows are a credit. Its what we leave behind that counts. Sign me, California fisherman fishing Texas (Surf and Freshwater. Bank and boat) P.S. Possible new video idea. I'd like to see G tossing a cast net :-)

Fantastic tutorial the last time I used a multiplier was nearly 40 years ago. My nephew has just started to go sea fishing so I thought I would join him. I’ve just picked up a second hand rod and reel. I always preferred using a multiplier to a fixed spool reel. Hopefully I won’t run into many issues after watching this video. I’m not aiming for long distance casting.

Well that's the best video I've seen for the novice caster using a multiplier. Have watched loads, and have gleaned much information, but this one takes everything back to basics, and explains so much. Many thanks for the simplicity, (and common sense when you put thought into it) for making this information available to the likes of myself, a novice to the use of the multiplier. Oh, by the way, really enjoy all of your videos,, you've got the formula bob on. Keep up the good work

Wow! The dreaded "bird's nest"! Yes, that has caught more than one of us. But you can cast so, so much further with it specially with heavy lines (+60) when you're after that big one from the coast! Been there, done that! What a mess! Still love my Mitchell though! PS: Love the accent, love the channel and what an awesome intro. Way to go! Congrats my friend. I've been fishing with multiplier reels on and off since 1984, when I learned how to cast one when I was out in California. And there is one thing he taught me. Use enough weight. And there is a formula to figure that out. Weight of the line divided by the length of the rod, this is the minimum amount of weight you should use. This will keep the line pulling off the reel fast enough to keep backlash/birdnests from happening. As for the reels I use I have the Peen level wind reels, the 9M, 209M and the 309M reel, and a Newel 454 reeel. And also try to use the longest rod you can. and make sure it has enough guides. Have fun and its time to go fishing.

+James Hart grams and metres or feet and ounces? Would you please explain the formula? I have a 3 metre rod with 10 kilogram breaking strain line and use a 60 gram lure?
@longrider42
@longrider42 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeff Campbell Well, I don't do metric. But I used to use a 5 and a half foot long rod, with a multiplier reel loaded with 40lb test. So I used a 8 ounce sinker. Thus you get 44.8. Now if I used a longer rod, say ten foot, and the same reel with 40lb test. you would only need a 4 ounce weight. And that's about the best I can do for you. So if you can convert your metrics into sae, then you can figure it out. Hope this helps.
@JeffCampbell2016
@JeffCampbell2016 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. The conversions are easy. My rod and line with a 4 oz weight is about 120g = 4 x 30, but my line is about 23lb so I'll start from 90g and experiment.

Like the intro Graham! You look as If you were walking out in a spigeti western, into a Bristol channel shot out, five ounces at 150 yards. One point is I would strongly recommend is to set the drag because big bass and smooth hounds, will put a fair bit of distance between you and them when first hooked, or even when they first take the bait. Still a video with some good common sense for the novice.

Nice video with some good tips. However I must warn people against tightening the float caps (as GP recommends) as a way to slow the reel down. On most modern multipliers, this will crush your bearingss which is really not a good thing. Best off relying on the mags and centrifugal brakes.

After watching 12-15 videos on conventional reels, You answered the question no one else did. I was wondering if we have to manually wrap / balance the line when reeling in. I find that a little complicated and since I catch well with spinning reels, I think I'll stick to those. I troll alone so less complex the better.
@cityofanglers560
@cityofanglers560 7 жыл бұрын
All due respect to TAFishing, I disagree on this point. Honestly, you don't have to levelwind it manually every time. I recently (6 months ago) removed the level wind from one of my Abu's and I've been getting used to it. Throughout the day I just reel like always. Only ONCE at the end of the day, literally my "final cast", I manually "level wind" it. My only problem is my OCD goes crazy by the uneven spool so that's why I level it. Yeah, I know, it's stupid. A couple things though: 1) Fill your spool only to 80% winding as level as you can. Remember, the working line on the left and right sides of the spool will be in the middle as you're fishing and will stick out more. 2) Do NOT feather the line on the spool, feather only the metal lip on the sides of the spool which should be exposed by your first cast, which removes line from both sides and naturally relocates it to the middle. Different strokes for different folks, though.

I thought about buying an Akios 757 line level but after reviewing your video I'm going to purchase the open face 757 for longer cast and a 12 foot rod I need this for the Tarpon that comes down the beach about 150 yards out now I understand the energy build up by the sinker and 6 to 8 feet of line to balance the distance cast thanks I fish the Treasure coast of Florida also the 757 has so much more cranking power and gear ratio needed land the big ones I now use an Akios 656 which I love and it is so easy to maintain verses a spin caster.

This is what puts most ppl off multipliers birds nests but if you set up your reel right at the start and not try casting 300 yard on your first cast you should pick itup fairly quickly also it gives you more of a challenge leveling the line while pulling in the fish i done away with level winds 20 odd year ago

Great informative video--better information than retailers who sell reels--seller videos offer minimum information and focus more on advertising their wares. As for the offensive comments about this video, there are always individuals who criticize others just to criticize.

6:24 happened to me 3 nights ago lost 2 huge fish, first one was on baited feathers (baited with king rag) was fighting it for about 10 minutes before it snapped the hook off it took line like crazy, 2nd one was on peeler crab it snapped almost instantly, I caught the line as it snapped and pulled it in but I cut my hands up because I wasn't wearing gloves, got the fish to the wall and it snapped again so I lost it (not that I could have pulled it up anyway) was a big smoothound or tope. Weird thing is it snapped the line but it pulled with such force that the 20lb braid was lodged inside one of the eyes of my rod,

I accept that line lay mechanisms reduce casting distance, but if close touching turns are desirable why haven't manufacturers designed the line-layer to do just that? (I can only think the helical thread would be too fine) Fixed spool reels have come a long way with oscillating spools etc ensuring line lay is perfect, but I'm left wondering why this isn't the case with multipliers. I mainly use fixed spools, but enjoy using my Abu 5500 on my bass rod, because it is so nice to hold. I've kept the level wind on though (I don't need distance),because I struggle to wind in fish, strip weed off and lay the line nicely. For me the distance sacrificed by the LW is well worth it. Thanks for another great video Graeme.

Great video my friend. I'm from Texas and fish the Texas surf for bull Redfish, Mackerel, Jacks etc. Just got into surf fishing and just got in a new Penn squall 15 multiplier reel. What Rod length and power would you recommend for the reel?

An average length over here would be 12 feet,but in the last few years there has been a surge in sales of 15 foot models. I don't know your reel,but I personally only use 12 foot rods.As for casting weight,make sure it is rated to throw at least 5 to 7 ounces,average being 6 ounces.

Red bulls , sharks in the OBX we use 12 to 13 ft. Rods. I like 12 cause they come apart evenly. The smaller the reel the faster the line comes off of it. I own a diawa slosh 20, and can heave it 130-140 yrds. I hope this helps.

very interesting video. I have a question, does the reel seat locked with electrical tape resist the stress of casting well? Matteo from Italy

It seems to.It has been on there for years,but I think I whipped it on with fishing line first,then taped over the top.

Should I remove the live guide (level wind on my rod)

I always take mine off. Leader knots can jam in the level wind,and I can lay the line better with touching turns on the retrieve which aids the next cast.
