This video shows you how I cast my sinking line shooting head/running line. If you practice these few, simple steps, you'll be able to cast 100'-120' in no time! Checkout my previous video to see how I build the shooting head/running line configuration.
I use this set-up primarily at pyramid lake, however it has proven to be very useful in any fishing application where getting your flies down deep quickly is important. It also doubles as a great line for trolling flies from a boat.

Great method - I have one hand so this is super helpful, thank you. I am musky fishing with a 9 foot 10 wt with shooting head with integrated 7s sink tip with 4 foot leader and a big fly

Dude, love your videos! So, just to clarify, you are not using a switch chucker or switch line per se…more like a combination of lines starting w backer, mono, sink and finally leader? Looks like over hand casting using the water to load your line on the back cast and then at the very end, the two hand grab for the final forward cast. Looks pretty challenging, not to mention wearing gloves. How long to get that down for an experienced fly fisherman but novice Switch user. (Been coming down to Pyramid for a few years but my aging shoulder and forearm are begging for a rod/casting change up.)

@@mercertevyn in the slowmo clip, I’m using a Rio Level-T 30’ sink tip (T14), and for the running line, Sunset Amnesia 40 lb shooting mono (my wife’s reel). During the tutorial, I’m still using a Rio level-T 30’ sinking head, but for the running line, I’m using 45 lb OPST Lazar Line (my own reel). Both running line options are great. OPST’s line has a much smaller diameter per the breaking strength, and seems to straighten out better. But I do like that the Amnesia line is thicker, giving me something more to grab on to while stripping. I couldn’t say that I prefer one over the other.

Are those Simms gloves? Any advice about keeping your hands warm in the winter?
@SoggySleeves
@SoggySleeves Жыл бұрын
If conditions are cold enough, I’ll wear knit gloves with XL nitrile gloves over top. You just wanna make sure the nitrile gloves aren’t tight, or else they’ll cut off your circulation. But really, the best way to keep your fingers warm is to keep your legs and torso warm. I have a heated vest that helps a lot. Also, I keep a microfiber rag in my waders so I can dry off my hands immediately.

When do you switch from sinking line versus floating line
@SoggySleeves
@SoggySleeves 2 жыл бұрын
Mostly just when I find the fish are preferring one method over the other. But the terrain has a lot to do with it too. Some rocky banks have too many obstructions to fish a heavy sinking line. However you can do well in those places using a hover line. I’m constantly changing flies and methods until I find something that will entice takes.

Yeah! I have a video where I go into depth about both my sinking line, and floating line setups. If you go to my channel, it’s two videos before this one.

Question So you still overhead cast? I see people out there using sinking line setups,they get it way out there with ease and no false casting.

Not unless I have more than about 12-24” of that mono running line out of the tip of the rod. I usually keep it right at about 6” of running line out of the tip of the rod. I find that gives me the optimum load on the rod. I’m also using a thicker mono, like 55 lb or something, so there is a little more friction on the guides as the line is passing through. That little bit of friction really helps it turn over, while still having low enough friction to shoot out massive amounts of line. And then I do pile up the right amount of line so I run out right at the end of the cast and everything comes tight. When that happens, everything lays out straight. If I don’t get that tight finish, and things land more in a squiggly line, or pile, I just quickly strip in all the slack so it all sinks in a straight line.

I know this may be a dumb question but how do you choose the right size shooting head? (T 14) I wanted to try it on my Douglas 7 weight switch rod? Good video thanks
@SoggySleeves
@SoggySleeves 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! The “14” in T-14 means that line weighs 14 grains per foot. So a 30’ length weighs 420 grains. The rod I use has a grain window of 400-440. If you don’t know what your rod’s grain window is, you can probably find it by doing a Google search, or you can email the rod manufacturer and they’ll know. So those level-t shooting heads come in like t-7, t-11, t-12, t-14, t-17,….

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone use sinking line with a switch rod at pyramid, pretty interesting technique. You need to work on only strip setting and not side trout setting with your strip set. Cool vid tho
@mercertevyn

I don't think he does... The strip set is for fish species with very hard mouths. He's still fishing for trout, no matter how big they get and obviously what he does works great for him. Great video indeed.

@@mercertevyn when stripping any flies no matter what species you should always strip set and never trout set. If you watch Doug O or any of the experienced streamer fishermen they never trout set. Also these cutthroat have really hard mouths and im sure he doesn’t post all the missed fish while stripping

The rod looks like a moonshine the drifter prophecy switch rod to me and in a comment he says grain weight window of 400 to 440 grains. I would say a 7wt switch rod seeing the grain weight window.
