That was great. I have a hard enough time catching blackfish in season from a boat and here you are catching out of season, early, from the beach, and you’re catching keepers. Amazing. Ultimate angler.

This is why I highly recommend reading your books. I do the same thing in NC but the crabs will be in the grass and rocks if you can find any rocks. Also oyster beds but beware of oyster beds even with tennis shoes they can go through and cause a nasty cut. You can ask my wife as she got a bad cut doing this one time years ago with shoes on. Great video!

Up in Massachusetts these things are destroying the salt marshes and damaging the fisheries, and when I lived there there were some groups trying to figure out creative ideas for how to deal with them. Over and over "why can't we just eat them and control them that way?" Hang on baby, I'll pick out some claws to make you a crab roll. It'll be ready for our 96th anniversary.

Great video! Awesome job showing where to catch these crabs. Sea bass and tog from shore... they make a great meal... You mentioned you would prefer calmer conditions... if so would there be a need to use a heavier jig from shore? It appears you are using two crabs... I guess this depends on the size of the crabs or do you always use 2. Thanks, Scott

John, you are making me a super envious south fork guy. We just don’t have those beaches on the north shore of the south fork. Guess I’ll have to sell and relocate north. :) Did some blackfish reconnaissance on Sunday looking for unmarked spots (inspired by your side scan video, thanks for that) and ended up with a few choice off the grid locations. 18 fish and limit of keepers (all went back of course). Was also surprised to find them in 15 feet of water this early. Hopefully good tidings of a great blackfish season to come. Thanks again for the inspiration!

No, I’m south fork, not Mr Skinner. Just pointing out that our beaches are rock and boulder free, mostly sand, less hospitable habitat for the fish menagerie that John so deftly rules. Poseidon’s trident holds less sway over the ocean than John’s “Dark Matter“ rod does.

I have a trick for catching those Asian Crabs John. I fish East Marion at low tide and it's Rock City over there. All you need is a small pail like the kind kids use in the sandbox. They make them with sliding lids. As soon as you flip the rock, quickly place the pail face down to trap them all. Twist and turn the pail so it goes into the sand an inch or two. Then push the slide over and you have 90% of the crabs. The dump your catch into the bigger bucket and move to next rock. If you can't find a pail with the sliding top lid, use the same technique as I just described. Place clear saran wrap over the pail with extra slack. Slightly lift the pail and use the extra saran wrap slack to trap them and scoop them into the pail. Takes a little practice but works like a charm. Good Luck!!

I can't get over the population density!! What do they feed on that so many can exist right on top of each other? Are they cannibals? I'll have to look into this, but it's no wonder you've got such a steady pick of fish with that kind of bait so readily available.
