In this episode, I go over in detail how, when and where to catch Kingfish, also known as King Mackerel. A prized catch when offshore fishing, charter fishing or sport fishing. The advice and tips in this video have been gathered through years of experience, and are shared to help you catch more fish. I go over what I consider to be the easiest most productive technique and show examples of fishing for these voracious carnivores, along with the best bait to use. I include advice on where to target them. I also go over when to target them, being the time of year , or the time of day.

Getting ready for this week! Do you use wire to wrap the top of the strip bait? Best videos by far! What other strip baits can work besides the Bonita if I run out? Thank you!

No wire to wrap the strip... just double hooks. Keep it simple. Barracuda straps if you run out of Bonito. Or just use a drone spoon. Good luck

Thanks a boat load for watching and asking a great question. I typically describe planer trolling as meat fishing, because that's what it is. The range of species it catches reaches far and wide. I've caught mutton snapper, blackfin & skipjack tuna, dolphin (mahi), barracuda, sharks, blue runners, almaco jacks, bonito, sailfish, wahoo, and white marlin. yes, depth and time of year do play a part, but more importantly, you are fishing the water column. I've always believed that fish aren't always feeding up on top. This gets you down there, where you can't see. Avi says "Hello". Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. It's just sort of an eyeball thing and experience with using certain lures. The bigger the lure the bigger the hooks you want to use. The key factor is that your trailing hook hangs out just beyond the end of The lure in the strike zone. I use the bigger hooks that way they are not buried inside the lure. Having hooks buried inside your lure is what causes short strikes. Hope this helps. Thanks again for all your support and always watching videos and asking great questions. @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing I went out couple days ago and no luck. I tried using downriggers and discovered the weights just can't take the speed then switched to planers and trolled for an hour over an area that had hard bottom structure with ledges but no luck. I was out in blue water and I have listened to people who said kings are caught in green water? Does that mean I could have been too deep? The lures used were the skirts I made just like the ones you showed how to make. The bait might have been too thick for trolling. The strips were a bit over 1/4 inch thick. What is the ideal thickness and portion of the bonita strip fillet? The silver part? does it matter? I figure next time troll over a public reef and see where that takes me. I'm new to trolling for king fish and not sure of the local areas for success. I might try offshore the Tampa Bay channel. Any advice for venturing out for the first time to locate possible areas for success? I did later catch a huge bull shark bottom fishing. Thanks in advance for the advice!

Once again an awsome video! I see you use the garmin gt23. I just installed this unit my self and still have to test it. What is the maximum depth you managed to spot fish at? (not sea bottom, but fish)

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Good catch on the technology I use, thanks for noticing. I've marked fish in 1400 feet. Swordfish to be exact. I don't really ever mark anything that deep, but when it showed up I was blown away. It's great for deep dropping in 800 too, finding structure for rosies and snowy grouper, or the mud flats for golden tiles. The factory transducer works great, very little time delay, I troll at 8 knots in 650 in it still reads without going silent. Hope this helps. All your videos are very well done and packed with information - Thanks. Most lures, swivels, hooks etc I have been able to figure out the manufacture. But the mylar sea witches in this video have me stumped. Who makes them? Ill be fishing Marathon first week in June. Hopefully I'll get to yell "Dolphin in the boat".

The mylar sea witches I get them from West Marine, couldn't find them online, I believe the manufacturer is Sea Striker... Next time time I head there I'll be sure to take note of it, as I take them out of the package and put them in the tackle box as soon as I purchase them. Good luck on your trip. Keith - thanks for the timely reply. I leafed through a seastriker online catalog and came across 1/4 oz "ballyhoo" and 1/8 oz tinsel dusters with fluorescent red heads. Tinsel can be made of mylar and these look right - perhaps these are them. For the 1/4oz pearl (fd242prl) see www.tackledirect.com/sea-striker-tinsel-dusters-ssr-0075-3.html.

hi heath watch all you videos and has helped me for sure , i have a question you may be able to help with , when trolling with a lure like a concave head how do i keep the dark colour of the lure at the top and the light colour at the bottom , i heard that the hooks naturally point up but intrigued to know how to keep the lure as mentioned many thanks john

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. First, hooks do not naturally travel point up. More often than not, they lay flat on their sides or point down. They do make an apparatus called a hook stop, which can give your hook directionality and stop it from swaying while trolling. Or you can use heat shrink around the eye of the hook and a little bit of the leader. This does not promise the hook to point upwards. The real way to get the hook point up, is to get lures that are made to troll that way, for example Ilander lures have a leader hole that is offset from the center, making this the top of the lure.... So if you use that and some sort of hook stop to face the hook the same way, you'll get your desired hook facing up presentation. Hope this helps. Thanks for all your support. @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Hi Heath thankyou for the reply that's a great help , i was experimenting with the hook position and came up with an idea to insert a small piece of mono alongside the leader in the lure head , this reduces the hole size and you can twist the hook into the desired position , the lure will still slide too , i'm going to give it a try , what do you think?

If you try to absorb the entire method, yes, it can seem daunting. Great video. In NE FL, we traditionally troll live bait so this gives me another method to catching. It’s also grueling trolling live bait so slow in the summer with no wind.

Great video Heath. I’ve been learning quite a lot from your videos. I’m fishing in the Caribbean ocean thanks for sharing your insights on trolling. There’s one question I need a ask you. How do you run your line through the double rollers? Is it straight through the rollers, or is it over the rollers through the middle?

Typically, you lay your line on top of the roller, that way when the rod bends over, it activates the rollers and they spin to assist the line peeling out... also they provide less friction when retrieving the line. I’m still not sure what’s the correct way. I’m not sure if it’s the roller closest to the rod is referred to as the bottom or top roller. I’m not sure which one I string the line over first. I’ve been trying to see a demo video on the issue but I haven’t. Thanks again for your assistance
