In this short seminar, I go over in detail how, when and where to catch Mahi Mahi, also know as Dolphin. The saltwater fish that made offshore fishing popular. A prized catch when charter fishing or sport fishing. The advice and tips in this video have been gathered through years of experience, and are shared to help you catch more fish. I go over the various techniques and show examples of fishing for this highly migratory species, such as, sight fishing, running & gunning, and trolling, along with the best bait to use. There is advice on where to target them. I also go over when to target them, being the time of year , or the time of day.

It's way more pliable, I get less line twist and elasticity wear. Switched from Ande so long ago, I don't even remember. It's awesome you know about this line. Most folks have never heard of it. Great video Heath and good timing we just booked a place in Tavernier. We finally got out today, what a perrrrfect day didn't see you out tho. Great bird advice...saw a bunch today and now know they were on tuna. Great advice on the lures as well, crazy that the local tackles i go to dont go over anything you discuss. I got out in the afternoon, but by that time the onshore breeze kicked in blowing 10-15 knots from the Northeast.... Needless to say I got soaked. But, nevertheless, I got out. That bird info, is something I figured out a long time ago. I got another tip about birds for you. If you see only a couple birds feeding and heading south, that's more than likely big dolphin, they are strong enough to swim against the current of the stream, which always heads north. Hey Heath- Love the videos- thanks for the great content. Do you ever tip your bucktails? I've been fishing with bucktails up north for a long time for Stripers and fluke/flounder on the bucktail tipped with gulp or curly tails. Now I am a full-time Floridian and trying to learn as much as I can from you. Any thoughts on that? Thx.

Thanks a million for watching and sharing. Did my fair share of fishing the Cay back in the 80's and 90's. I grew up in Miami, with grandparents living in Key Largo, so I was down there quite often. Fishing in the Keys is like fishing on a whole other planet. One of the great angling capitals of the world, there's so much to do and so many places to go. Another very good video!!! Thank you!! Any chance you could do a video on smaller boat safe boat practices down there? I have a 17.5' Aquasport that's very similar to your boat and was wondering what forecast tools you use to determine when it's good to head out front or stay home. What are the inlets near you like? For example I would not head out of Haulover in my boat when the wind is against the tide. Or is it ok at Boca or Hillsboro inlets?

Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. I do have a small boat safety practices episode in the planning/pre-production stage. Haulover & Boynton inlets can get real nasty. I head out of Boca, which quite frankly, is the easiest inlet around to navigate, however, you are 100% correct, east wind and out going tide, gotta watch out for that no matter what inlet it is, it's about hydraulic flow VS atmospheric resistance. I'm never to worried about leaving the inlet, it's coming back in on the following sea that sinks boats... knowledge, in these time, is life saving power. As a furure off shore angler, believe EVERYTHING you said. I didn't like some of it. I want to troll SLOWLY, just over idol speed. But... After hearing you. Slow is bad. Speed is your friend. I also wanted to use 5,000 spinning reels. Looks like 8,500 is gonna be my pick. I learned a lot about birds. I was very very very happy to hear two things... #1 Trolling one line is okay. I don't want the hassel of multipule lines. #2 Artificial is fine. In particular a white buck tail. I want simple fishing.... Heading out at dusk on a FLAT calm morning from Miami, troll one line with a jig, drinking coffee for the morning. If I catch nothing.... 100% guarantee I can come inshore and catch lunch or dinner as the sun set. Thank you so much. YIKES ! ! ! I just watched your "best mahi weather/winds" clip. Strike the calm morning coffee... Which might actually strike my whole plan. I'm gonna CATCH fish inshore. I'm gonna troll a topwater lure at idol speed with coffee ... probably with WEST WIND and catch NOTHING with a smile on my face. Thanks.... You are the GOAT instructor....

So, weed lines are always around, however, where it grows on the bottom of the Sargaso Sea, it blooms and really starts to appear in big clumps and lines in May. Good luck with your first season. What’s the best pile and reel to use?? I’m heading down to the keys at the end of September for a fishing trip and I want to catch a couple mahi. Is a 6000 size reel good? Or would I need something bigger or maybe not as big. Also what size rod? I usually just fish for smaller stuff but I want to get some bigger poles for mahi and other stuff.

Kinda tricky to answer that question. Personally, I use bigger spinners and smaller conventional reels for big dolphin... for a spinner I use a Penn spin fisher 8500 with a 7 foot paraflex star rod.... and for the conventional I use a Penn 12h on a 7 foot hand crafted star rod.... however, adding some meat to the set up can't hurt. Penn 6-0 reels like a squall or a senator are excellent reels crafted for what you're trying to do... couple one of those with a 20 - 50 lb class trolling rod and you're golden

For mahi you typically want the lures up on top, so no down rigger is needed

I have caught mahi on Clark Spoons trollled behind a 4 to 6 ounce drail weight at 6 to 8 knots. I think it helps the lure stay on top without jumping around so much that it becomes tangled. I usually troll them off the corners with AFTCO roller release clips. Are you trolling off flat line clips or straight off the rod tip? What about employing birds in line with the lures?

I don't use flat line clips or teaser birds... Catch the same amount of fish. Just have to find them.. interesting setup on that Clark I like it.

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes I have called marlin on my spinning gear but it's not my intention. Those fish tend to weigh out class the gear and sometimes you win sometimes you lose. If I'm targeting Marlin I go with more bigger game fish gear. But a lot of it is mind over matter and experience of the angler when it comes to fighting a fish on lighter gear. Trust me when I say I've lost plenty of fish being out class by him and I've learned many lessons and yet I somehow keep going back for more punishment sometimes. Question for ya: I'm going sailing in Antigua next week and am bringing a couple of trolling rods to target mahi mahi. I have a couple Rapalas (dive to 30') and also some 8" squid skirts that I intend to run. Can you please advise on how you run squid skirts? Do you typically have them skipping along near the surface or are they further down? I have equipment (dipsy divers) that could target lower depths if recommended. Thanks I'm advance. Peter

The squids are top water baits. With an 8" you'll want to put a 1 ounce sinker in the head, using double 8-0 hooks on 40 or 60 lb test mono leader. It won't skip out of the water much. It'll run just below the surface. Good luck.

Curious, newer to fishing, we sail. want to start trolling while sailing. we go between 4 and 6 knots. Im interested in running a line off the back of the boat. (east coast - between carolinas and florida) - want to create a couple rigs that offer the best basic chance for mahi and tuna. thinking slammers and skirts around 50 lb mono - just not sure length of leader and what weight I should use?

Boone turbo slammer from tackledirect.com silver & blue. 60 lb mono leader about 8 feet... no extra weight.... that'll get mahi and Tuna when you run across them

@@cardinhamkilligrew9712 your line lb test typically depends on the size reel you're using... 30 lb test will be more than enough on a bigger reel. (i just wanna catch fish). so when trolling, are those lures close to the surface or do they have some weight to them. if they have weight, roughly how much. i know they aint dragging the bottom or anything. haha.. I dont have a lot of buds that fish like this so i have to come to youtube and learn. thanks for the videos.

They run just below the surface. They weigh 1/2 ounce... Troll 2 of them around weeds at 9mph

@@max7063 if its approach mid day or afternoon I'll set out a deep line for them. , because it''s heating up adn they'lll go down.. but in the morning only top water... its usually cooler and they'll be up on top mostly... until about 11am

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Of course the rapala deep divers are in my arsenal, gotta fish that water column to find the fish. Troll for dolphin can be way more involved than what I explained. I made this episode to almost serve as a quick startup guide to folks going who are just getting into the sport. BTW if you trailer lights are blink, there's probably a bad ground connection somewhere. I had to sand the paint off the ball of my tow hitch to end the on an off blinking. @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Thanks for the reply. I'm still learning salt water fishing after I Spent my life fishing Lake Michigan. That blinking light deal was really puzzling. Boat/Trailer I'd owned for 6 years but I bought a new GMC truck and the trailer lights blinked from day one. I changed the hitch receiver to a spare I had, cleaned the connections, used a new round - 4 pin flat connection and it still blinked. Hook the trailer up to my old work truck that hasn't had the hitch or connections cleaned in 10 yrs and the darn thing didn't blink. I sold the boat recently to buy a Center Counsel and never did figure out the cause. I have to think it's something with the new truck that wasn't compatible with the boat trailer wiring? Love your channel. It's a great source for those of us old guys who still need to learn a new phase of fishing.

Does it matter the time of year to catch Mahi? I know that late spring and summer are supposedly the best time of year, but do you think you could catch a bunch of mahi in March?

Dolphin will start to show up March... But honestly, May is the best month for them if your going for schoolies trying to catch your limit.... if your looking for big Bulls go hunting in October. Best of luck & tight lines ;)

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The answer depends on where you are really. Here in South Florida, they show up during the main part of their cyclical migration during the months of May through July. But they are always around in scattered pods. Hope this helps. Made a yellow feather squid with a single 7/0 on 20’ of 50lb moon leader. Trolled it as my shotgun line in a 3 rod spread yesterday about 6 miles out of Destin. Picked up my first mahi using it, but lost it at the boat 🤦🏼‍♂️🤣😭🤦🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️

The real name is dolphin fish.... The Hawaiian name mahi mahi is commonly used nowadays so it does not get confused with the mammal known as the porpoise.
