The float idea works great fly fishing in lakes. It is just too difficult to get your fly out as far as you sometimes need to with a fly rod if you are fishing from a bank. So the spinning rod and float do dramatically increase your casting distance. One fly that works very well here in the southwest is a "pistol-pete" fly; simply a #10 wooly worm with a small propeller on the front. A slow steady retrieve is needed to keep the small propeller moving. I always enjoy your videos and especially the tips you give along the way.

In my years of looking youtube fisherman, Carl and Alex have the best channel with great big fish and story BUT by far you are my nr.1 when It comes to guides, setups, tips. No cringe music and shit just straight to the point and thats it.

I discovered this way to fish a few decades back, almost by accident. I went hiking in the WA state mountains up to a remote lake & spent 3 days there. I tried everything I could think of to get the big rainbows to bite. Salmon eggs, spinners, spoons etc. Nothing would work, not a single bite. Then on the final day I was there, late afternoon, I had an idea come out of nowhere, I then removed a fly from a rooster tail type spinner, tied it on and put a big red & white bobber about 5 feet above it tossed it out there. Wham!! A nice trout right off the bat. Again. And again, trout after trout. In about 30 minutes I had 5 nice trout. Then the sun began to go down and fishing was done. I left next morning but never forgot about a bobber and fly. Lesson learned.

I learned to use flies on UL gear and pull behind my inflatable pontoon. Even on slow days I catch fish. On good days, I am catching two at a time. You gave me an idea with stopping the action for the fly to sink. Since I began pulling flies, I have not a one day without catching something. Large blue gilled are great fighters.

this is great. fly fishing is so bloody complicated and nearly impossible to manage the rods and line from a canoe. this is a great alternative. keep it simple, why i love spinning set ups.

Last year I went to a small fork of a famous salmon river in the Olympic Mountains in washington. I only brought a spinning rod instead of the fly rod (don't even know why I fly fish all the time), and I ran into some GIANT picky wild rainbows. Found a fly box and used this exact technique and I caught a 24×19 inch massive rainbow. After that I proceeded to catch a 20×14 rainbow next cast. Used this exact technique. Most extraordinary thing in fishing I've ever done hands down. Next time I fish there I'm gonna fish the fly rod. Thanks for the video, brought back one of my favorite fishing memories! 🙂

Years ago I watched a little boy use this on a smaller stream on opening day. He had his limit of eight (at that time it was eight fish a day) in about twenty minutes. A small round bobber and a nymph of some kind. He was back the next year and did the same thing. After that I never saw him again on the stream. It was in northeast Pennsylvania.

My favorite way to rig my line, I love your videos and I subscribed today! Also caught my first blueish rainbow trout that was around 15 inches with this type of rig. Used a grasshopper fly from south bend

Used a similar technique many a year ago, very effective. watching the vid reminds me of simpler days, a fly ,spinning rod and float. Sometimes had only two or three patterns. Caught a lot of trout. Again thank you for your tutorial. PS will try this with unweighted TM's.

I heard though that you have to pay there at that lake? Is that true? I heard it's a privately owned fishing spot where you pay to fish, but I'm not 100% on that. Do you know anything about that...? Great tips for float n fly, and I also love those Okuma UL's for drifting, but definitely gotta give the flies a try. I recently saw a video where the guy took the hooks off of a floating Rapala as a float. There were also different applications for forward or backward floats. Thanks for the tips and give the pooch a treat on me!

That's awesome, that is the exact same Okuma setup I have and use. I highly recommend this rod/reel combo, it's super light wight, strong, and fun to catch fish of all types and sizes on! The rod I use is 6'6", and the line I really like using is Fishing Sir's Godline S 8lb with TroutMagnet 4lb mono-leads (best mono I've ever used and I have gone through a lot line in my many years of fishing). I also tie it together with a double uni knot, the two lines work very well together with this knot. You can also cast super far with no added weight. I can fling a 1/16oz jig, by it's self, out pretty dang far and it's always where you want to cast it, and with little effort. I was just fishing with it today at Foster Reservoir and some ponds just outside Sweet Home, OR, and had a lot of fun with Trout and Bass! Love the videos, very good instructions. It's awesome to see a group like this on KZfaq representing the great NW! Keep up the great work!

Good info dude, suggestion tip your rod to the 10 & 2 position to pull the fish away from the weeds. This is very effective when fighting a big fish, works great when using ultra light rods.

Although floating flys is great. The trout magnets are king amount the bonnet and jig/fly rig! Mini magnets, trout slayer craw love them! All I fish now. Barley use lures and never use bait anymore.

one guy in the lake, super calm water no flow, using this setup and just casting and waiting, no action to lure at all, and crushed the fish!!! Damn, I used tons of lures, and cast and retrieve didnt work!!! I still cannot believe my eyes how productive this rig is!!!! and yes I caught tons of fish in that lake using the cast-and-retrieve method!

I’m a fly fisherman. And I’m starting to look in the spinning gear because sometimes the wind is just too strong or places are too tight to do any kind of fly casting. Interesting to see how you can use flies with spinning gear. I don’t know why More Spinner guys don’t put a lot more positives in their retrieve. It’s almost like most people throw it out there and reel it in as fast as they can.

I have a question, I'm fairly new to fishing and don't know alot about fly fishing however I think grasping the concept you're showing here quite well. My question is if I'm using this set up with a Wolly bugger or nymph (which to my knowledge are known as wet flys because they fall under the water) I use the technique you're showing here with the slow retrieve and rod jerks? And if I were to use a dry fly I would make my cast and just leave the fly sit for an extended period of time? Love the videos

Does the heavier line help cast further or just float on the water better? I always thought that lighter line allowed further casts due to less drag through the air
