dude if i could give you a million thumbs up I would. This vid saved my butt. I got stranded 2 hours away from home with a dead fuel pump. My wife picked me up and the next day I watched this vid, bought a pump and filter and had it replaced in 3 hours. Wasn't easy, but it made it sooooo much easier knowing what to do. If I got stuck, I'd shimmy out from under the van and watch the video then back down I'd go lol. I didn't drop the tank all the way, I was able to cheat it by tipping it.

Just finished replacing the pump assembly on the 1999 Grand Caravan I gave to my daughter last year. Here is the ticket for getting the big lock ring off the pump assembly. Go to the hardware store and get a sink strainer lock nut wrench. It is made for tightening the big ring on the underside of the sink strainer, which looks very similar to the lock ring holding the fuel assembly in. With that wrench, it was a breeze to remove the lock nut on the fuel pump assembly, even with it half hanging under the car. I was able to change the fuel pump assembly just putting the rear passenger side on a jack stand, dropping only the passenger side of the tank, lowering it by hand onto a stack of 2x4s, then taking them out one at a time until it was at an angle where I could get the pump assembly out. The only time I needed a hand was raising the tank back up so I could thread the strap bolts back in (tank was 1/4 full). Thanks for the video, which helps to add a little confidence to the job (now I'll just worry for a couple months that I did something wrong and will picture her car bursting into flames as she is driving down the road).

I replaced the pump in my 99 caravan 3 years ago with a Delphi pump and it just died, it only lasted about 13 thousand miles. The original pump went over 150 thousand. I remember the box said made in China so this time I bought a Carter pump. Guess what it says on the box. Yup made in China. I raised up rear of the car and then just took out the passenger side bolts and with a board and a jack lowered the tank enough to get the pump out. So you only have to disconnect the power connector and the fuel filter. Car had 5/8 of a tank of gas and I didn't have to remove any gas. The new Carter does not have an external filter and it has two rubber plugs that act as a bumper to prevent vibration between the pump and the gas tank. Good video. Happy Motoring.

I've got to do this on the wife's 200 Grand Caravan...it went out yesterday and it fires fine on ether, relay and fuse are fine...Not a real big fan of changing in-tank fuel pumps, but this doesn't like it's too bad of a job...Thanks for the video!

Lift and support the pass side of the van. Loosen the tank strap bolts. Disconnect the three quick disconnect lines. Pull the 10mm bolt. Remove old filter. Assembly is reverse of tear down.

@gyrofix Yes. It's called a "quick disconnect" tool. You can find them most anywhere. On some models you don't need it.

@95HondaCivicSiii Test fuel pressure. It should be around 50-55 psi. Also check injector pulse while cranking.

The OLD Airtex pumps were GREAT! The current ones (for this model) are horrible. It could be the tabs are damaged. A close tear down and inspection will tell it.
@briansmobile112 жыл бұрын
@coldpak82 YES. It could be. I would recommend getting it on a scan tool so you can see the Crank signal. A quick and dirty way to test is to do this test at 1:00.

depends on you, and if you can lift the right side of the van up. It's pretty easy to me.

Thanks for your video. On a side note, I was completely unable to remove the locknut as you suggest. In hindsight, I could have done it with a friend if we were both tapping with separate chisels 180 degrees apart at the same time. However, I didn't think of that until it was time to install it. I ended up busting out the fuel pump with vise grips, slowly working my way around the circle of the locknut. Once I did that, the locknut came free, but now I know that is the last resort.

Could you use your compressed air & the evap lines to drain the tank like you showed filling a transfer case? Not sure if there are any check valves in the lines or not. Curious to see how to put the tank back in full of fuel.

@wonkavella you sir are correct! I'm sorry I typo'ed. I'll fix that. It's a fuel pump video.

If I am not removing the tank/just tilting it do I have the remove the vent lines for the connecting piece? And how long of a job do you think this is, I'm a basic mechanic and can do most fixes on the cars that I drive...? Thanks for the video though it saved me a lot of money compared to taking it somewhere to get fixed.

Hi, I had exactly the same fuel supply problem, I also diagnosed the problem with starter fluid but rather than removing the hose clamp (at shown at minute 1:40) I simply pulled off the breather hose on the left of the air filter and gave it a couple of squirts of starter fluid, and yep, it starter right up for a second or two.

You can listen to see if you hear the pump running by listening in the gas cap hole. When new pumps that are bad (Airtex) fail- they whirrrr a little too fast.
@TRcustomengineering12 жыл бұрын
@coldpak82 Are you hearing the fuel pump prime when you first turn the key on? Do the noid light test first as brian said, it very well could be the crankshaft sensor.

When the Airtex ones fail the pump runs (comes on), but no fuel comes out. It just loops back into the tank due to the defective pressure valve inside the sending unit.

@briansmobile1 Hey, Thank you very much for the reply. I just tried spraying starting fluid right now and no start. How do I check to see if it's getting spark?

I have completed this project on a 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan ES with the 3.8L engine. Only took me 6 hours and a lot of time watching videos like this one. Here are my tips, but not to take anything away from Briansmobile1 he posts videos that help. 1) Disconnect 1 (lower screw loop) of 2 from fuel intake hose that leads to fuel tank. Just loosen it, you won't be able to take it off and watch out with the plastic fuel tank. BE CAREFUL - all this stuff is plastic. You will fully disconnect this when you drop the tank, I used a hydraulic jack with some wood to support the tank. 2) Same spot, you'll notice this metal protector with 3 screws (10 mm) take it off. Disconnect the evap line. Mine only had one and be careful not to break the plastic crap connectors. 3) Disconnect plug from fuel pump. Be very careful and you want to slide this red tab to the right, not the left. Then unplug it. 4) Disconnect any fuel lines from fuel pump and/or fuel filter. I had to replace both because I broke the plastic tubes on the fuel pump trying to take off the fuel filter hoses. There is also this grounding wire that runs from the fuel filter to one of the brackets that holds the tank. I had already taken it off the fuel filter. 5) Drop the tank by unscrewing the 4 nuts (15 mm) that hold the brackets that hold the fuel tank. While dropping the tank with the jack, be careful to fully disconnect the fuel feeder line from step 1. I siphoned gas while I was doing this step. Took forever. The less gas you have in the tank the better. The longest part of this job was getting gas out the tank. Still smell like gas. Ha! Once you drop the tank you have to take off the "pickle jar lid" to free the fuel pump. This sucks! I used a screw driver, broke some of my sh_t, used a belt with vice grips, I think that ultimately loosened it, but I used my brute strength, both hands and just took it off that way. I tried with the screwdriver but chipped too much. Glad to get that bi_ch off. Reverse it, drive it, burn some wheels and drink more than a few cold ones!

This video helped me out quite a bit. Wish you would have gone into more detail on removal of the 2 main evap hoses. They're found within the driver side rear wheel well, and it took me forever to figure out that you twist and pull. Besides that everything else is either bolted or clamped.. Not a fun job, it took me about 6 hours, but time is cheaper then a mechanic. My advise is to buy a syphon pump at home depot for about $14 and 3 of their $3 5 gal. buckets. It takes a while to get the gas out if it's a full tank, but an empty fuel tank will help a lot when it comes to re-fastening it to the car.

@rock962000 When it's not starting, check for spark and or try starting fluid. If it won't start with starting fluid sprayed in throught the air cleaner to throttle body hose, then likely you aren't getting spark. If it starts with the fluid then it isn't getting fuel.

slide the red tab toward the fat side of the red tab HARD. Then squeeze the release and it will come off.

i replaced this fuel pump 3 years ago with a airtex and it hasn't given out on me but how the fuel filter from autozone fits the nipple at the fuel line but occasionally it keeps snapping off by itself causing the van to die on the road sometimes. what could be the problem the fuel filter having cheap locking tabs or the nipple locking tab to the fuel line that goes to the fuel rail is bad?

Hey Brian. It seems you know a lot about cars. Do you know anything about BMW's?? I have a 89 BMW 525i and I'm having the same problems as the owner of the Chrysler had. But what is weird is, I can start the car up, but as I turn it off and attempt to start it again, It will just crank and crank and crank. But if I want a whole day and try to start it, It will start up as it did the day before and so on. You think you can give me any advise please?

Do you think there is enough room to pull out the fuel pump by undoing the strap and let the fuel tank sit on a jack on one side and keep all the hoses attached? Whats happening for me right now is that I can hear the fuel pump, but it is a very very short "hum" sound from the fuel pump. I pulled out the front 3 spark plugs and do not smell any gas whatsoever, thus this is the reason why I think is the fuel pump going out.

@macariobelmontes While it's hot and not running check for spark. (I have a vid on how to do that on my channel.) If it doesn't have spark, it's LIKELY the PCM. They like to die on those.

If it's an Airtex fuel pump return it! THEY SUCK for this application. The pressure return valves inside the sending unit are faulty from the factory. Get a Carter brand. I know two years ago AIRTEX was ok. The new ones are useless. I tried three of them last week on this exact same van before filing a labor/warranty claim with the vendor. A carter pump requires some priming by cycling the ignition (not cranking) so the pump comes on for a second or two with a burst of pressure. 7-8 times

If it's a Airtex that's the problem they had SEVERAL that were defective on the feedback valve inside the sending unit. Get a different brand. (Other Airtex pumps are great, just this application got BOTCHED!)
