I mounted my base to a 7ft brushhog deck on my Deere. I just store the parts in the garage.....slip'em in the base when needed and the brush hog weights 1500lbs so no movement at all. I also some times use the main changer part in my bench vise which is good to save space....the vise is always there and it eliminates the need for the tire change base and it doesn't wiggle.

i put a washer on the inside of the sleeve for the base and and put a bolt thru it instead of the pin so it dont wobble and lagged it to my bench...and that thing is solid..i like them things.. rock on.

I went out and bought one of these yesterday to change a tire thanks to the clarity of your video. My hub had a grease spindle bearing on it but thanks to this I knew exactly how to get it done. I think a boatload of the tire lube helps a LOT in putting the tire back on. I got mine off without even mounting the tool to a deck. But putting the tire back on with a tube is harder so I mounted it to some boards to stand on the boards. My new valve stem was slightly loose (in my tube) so I recommend people tighten those up a bit to avoid a slow leak down the road and think they got a hole in the tire. My tubeless tire was getting old and leaking so I put a new tube in it and it will be fine for several more years.

First time fixing my lawn tractor flat with a pry bar and screwdriver and will not be buying one of these, but liked the demo. It is just going to take a little longer for me because I am a stubborn senior. I wondered why the foot of this tool didn't go in the other direction to push down closer to the rim! Questions like that are what made me take on all my own repairs. After a self-appointed expert tried to diagnose my lawn tractor's issue and got me to order a bunch of useless expensive parts, I did research while waiting for the parts, returned nearly everything, and did the job myself. Same with the refrigerator warranty repair. Guy couldn't figure out how to get behind the inside back panel to replace the temperature control part and said he'd get back to me once he talked to another technician. He left the part, I popped off the caps that hid the screws and did the job myself. I figured out the big secret for how a lot of DIY men repair things, but they can be impatient and just replace unnecessary parts in the hope they will hit the right fix! I live in a remote area and can either do it myself or wait forever for someone to bumble into a fix. Not all repair persons know what they are doing.

I worked at a Western Auto store back in the early '70s and we used something similar to this, but of course much larger. It was air driven and we used it to change car and truck tires. Even tires for a small dump truck. Sure made thing a heck of a lot easier than the old way using pry bars.

I made a mount for this that its into my receiver hitch. It sticks out far enough that the tailgate will open and the main leg is adjustable up and down. I use mine a lot and I made another cup with a rubber gasket from an irrigation pipe that drops over the main 5/8" shaft so when I tighten the top nut it clamps the wheel from both sides with rubber. Wheels do not spin in it now. I also made me a T handled wrench that fits over the top nut so i can spin it down real quick and really tighten it. It works really good now.

I have advice to those of you who suggest cutting off the valve stem early. If you are working on a familiar tire and know there is not a tube inside okay. But if you are unaware of a tube inside and there can be if your working on a customers tire, it's to late after the valve stem is gone.

I knew the other day was going to be hot. So that morning I placed my two front tires off the mower on the concrete drive way. I let them sit out there all day. The heat softened up the rubber and made it a litter easier to break them down and get them off the rim. Even still it was No easy job. All I had was a couple of screw drivers and a crow bar and a rubber hammer and dish soap. If that tire changer works as good as you have shown I may have to get one. I hope I do Not have to change any more tires for awhile... Just checked the two front are fine. But the back tire is flat. Some day are better than others.

WOBBLY-BASE FIX: drill a hole in the side of the base and then another on the long side of the base. tap the holes for a 3/8 size bolt or so. now with the 2 bolts 90degrees about ,tighten them and it will take up the slack/wobble.......you may not even need the base pin anymore if you drill a light 'detent' into the silver peice.

I have to admit that I have very little experience with changing tires but I did manage to get the old rear tire off and the new on the rim on my John Deere D100 riding mower. What I cannot figure out is how to get the inner edge of the tire on both sides to push up against the rim so it will allow air to fill up the tire. The new tire is contracted in about an inch or so and I don't know how you get it to press against the rim. I'm sure there is a really easy answer to this problem but I'll be dammed if I can figure it out.

+Robert Nash ATV TIRES and RIMS- VERY GOOD POINT. Anyone looking to do ATV tires with ANY tire tool is VERY VERY VERY hard to do. WHY? Built into the rim is a SECOND bead lock. A bead lock is just a bend in the rim that traps the edge of the tire between the lip of the rim and a second lip inside. This second bead is so you can stomp on the gas and the tire won't spin around the rim. It also allows to run the tire under-pressurized and not break free from the bead and loose all the air. ATV tires can be plugged from the outside. If the repair can't be plugged. Cut the tire off the rim and install a new one. If you put a tube in a ATV tire. All I can say is don't go far from home.
@pcofranc
@pcofranc 8 жыл бұрын
I put 3 tubes in my 1985 Honda ATC 200X three wheeler and put many many miles including street, trails, etc with no problems ever. The rims had dents from PO and always leaked and needed air ever 3 weeks or so. Tubes = no more leaks. But it may depend on the exact shape of the rim and smoothness.

I did the same thing with my first HF changer because I forgot to put the plastic spacers on the threaded rod. After I I got a second one and and watched this video and used it properly it has never failed me. What about the front wheels that the cone is too big to fit in the smaller diameter hole to keep it centered and secure.I knocked out the (outer) wheel bearing only.The inner bearing has a built in seal,not wanting to chance any damage. Lucky I have a lathe so I made a bushing with a 60 degree taper out of 1 1/2" ABS plastic about 1 1/4" long. Now the front wheel is stable and tight. Doing a 6" 4ply lawn tractor tire is a fight no matter what. Now keeping the tire from turning is another challange.So far vice grips and C clamps aren't working.I then put a 4"C clamp wide open across the tread holding both beads together enough to put both of them top and bottom in the narrower portion of the rim. I was able then to use the mounting tool and my knee enough to get the tire on to the last 1/3 of the bead left to go. I finished it off using a a 24"pry bar. If only I was 69 again I could have done it with less fight

@crabtrap
@crabtrap 6 жыл бұрын
u can avoid the "slop" by mounting the cast aluminium tire block (not the red base) to a bench vise. Or you can tap 2 holes perpendicular to the base pin to allow for 2 slack/clearance bolts to be added, this will make the base to tire change block tolerance tight as a drum!
@dalesworld1308
@dalesworld1308 6 жыл бұрын
I like the idea of the bolts in the other direction. A bench vise is too high for me to work and get my body 'into' it. I bolt mine to a trailer deck and everything is nice and low so I can put a knee on the tire if I have to. That unit work great for demounting the tire but when mounting I use the tire changer more like a vise to hold the tire and rim and I use spoons to get that last half bead on. Much easier.

Using this tool to change tires on a golf cart and it does not work for me: the threaded rod bends every step of the way. May be at 23 x 10.5 on 12" wheels my tires are too big for the tool? the rod bends when I apply the demounting tool against the spacers/locking nut. Instead of enabling the tire to come off the rim easily as shown in the video, this move bends the rod badly. I am also damaging the edges of the wheel in the process.

Question: My rims on my riding mower are like new. The tires are just bald so I get sliding on my turf. Will this this tool scratch up my rims and cause rusting? Is there a decent way to minimize this if this is true?
@handymanPF

Mine was fine. The pry bar that comes with the unit is smooth and painted which caused no problem for me. I don't have any ideas off of the top of my head I could recommend unless I try them first. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.

I have a question for you handy man, what size tire fits a bolens tractor 12inch rear wheel. Your harborfrieght tire changer is a handy machine to have. work good Daniel Richard
@handymanPF

I would assume a 12 inch tire. As far as the other diameter sizes I would have to look up. Don't it have tires on it, so you could get the sizes off of it?

+Mark Spain If my mind serves me correctly, I think it only does up to 12 inch. For a bigger rim and tire, you would need the bigger setup. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please Like, Share, and Subscribe.

Why destroy a working valve?
@handymanPF
@handymanPF 5 жыл бұрын
All for demonstration purposes. Also when you replace a tire with a new one , it is recommended that you replace the valve. It’s a way of being proactive. Especially if you work in the field. Because down time will cost you more then that $2 valve stem. I hope this helps. I greatly appreciate the question. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe.

New valvestem every time any tire is broken down, period. They're dirt cheap and it's not worth taking the chance of having a failure in the future.

Now if you would do it correctly it would be even easier. Most rims are designed to make one side easier to mount and dismount tires from. You chose the hard side but still got it done...

How do you get the tire to pop the bead in place once you put air?
@MrCtheB
@MrCtheB 5 жыл бұрын
A lot of time when you put air in the valve it'll seat itself. If your tire is giving you a problem, remove the valve core if you have the tool. I pack grease between the rim and tire for farm tires to create a better seal until the tire seats itself.
@handymanPF

I use a strap for small tires like I did in this video at the end kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpZ3htxm29G0caM.html . But if you do it this way, proceed with caution. It is on the dangerous side. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like share and subscribe
