Great vid. What a lot people don't know is what causes the majority of tuning issues is lack of lubrication or smoothness at the friction points (saddle slots, nut slots, and even string trees), and poorly wrapped wraps around the string post. I've done the lock/tie method (aka the "Martin tie") and the guitar would still not hold tune due to rough friction points, and then I've done the simple wraps just like in this video where the instrument held its tune so precise and well and all the friction points were lubricated and smoothed out with nice, snug wraps around the post. The "Martin tie"/lock method, one over and the rest under method, and this simple method in this video all work well. Whatever method keeps your mind at ease, do it but don't forget to make sure your friction points are lubricated and smooth to allow the string to glide smoothly without getting caught or stuck, hence causing poor tuning stability and strings snapping. I personally do the one over and the rest under method. That method and this method in the video also make removing the string so much easier as well especially if you're gigging and you snap a string and need to change as quickly as possible.

Extra trick, to get a smooth string ending, without the sharpness, is to just wiggle it back and forth, then it will break off inside the string hole, so you can't cut yourself :)

I, too, think this is a great video, but there is one thing that is lacking: the upper strings are harder to keep in place than the lower strings (the 6th string, demonstrated in this video, is the easiest.) I just replaced one string, the 1st string and it was much harder to keep the string in place after allowing for the the two frets of slack and starting the winding of the string. So does anyone have any extra advice for a 1st string, being that it is harder to "tame" than a 6th string?

Question, so I have always winded the string a few times before I put it in the hole. And then after it’s in the hole i wind it up. Is that okay ? I’ve seen others do it too. And I have been doing it with my Jackson for years. Does that do anything bad to the strings ? Or is it just a matter of preference?

what about the bottom strings should you tighten it the other way then ( 1 to 3 strings )

I have just realised I made the mistake of only pulling the G B and high E strings back by just over one thret because me being impatient didn't listen properly to what this guy was saying as regards to giving your strings slack. It has tuned fine, and dosent feel tight. Is this okay? Or should I replace those 3 strings and give them the proper amount of slack?

I've got a Wildwood Spec LP on the bench now that the 1-fret/2-fret of slack would not work with because the tuners are short. Only 1/2 fret of slack works here.

Looks like you are using a Snark clip on tuner. I got one of these, but the instructions say to not use it with a Gibson because of the varnish. Did you ignore this, or do you have a version of the turner that works with a Gibson?

I have a question: Does the tail piece need to be higher where the thicker strings are? I have my tail piece flat touching the body of the les Paul. I’ve seen some people have it flat and some people have it higher where the thicker strings are and for the thinner strings the tail piece is a bit lower. Also my 6th E string, and 5th A String are louder than strings 4-1. Is that normal?

Damn I've been doing this way wrong for the last 20 years. I've been pulling the string tight up to the nut, wrapping the string around the post once before sticking it through the hole. Then I would start to wind. I wouldn't even line up the post hole with the neck.

Alright hear me out. I have a Epiphone Les Paul Special...but it's kinda different. The head of the strings are supposed to be to go underneath. And not where you said in your guitar that it would go outside.

I’m having a panic attack, I just broke my guitar string and all I can think about is my father shaking his head and telling me ‘you shouldn’t have tuned it, I would’ve done it.’ And the thing is I know how to tune, I’ve been playing the violin for 3 years already and I’ve taught myself (with the help of KZfaq) how to tune a guitar and my music teacher taught me how to tune my violin. But all I can think about is the disappointed look my father will have on his face.

So I never changed strings on a les paul before. New guitar player. So I watch this vid. At no time does he say dont take off all strings at once. So I unwind then cut all the strings then the metal hardware falls off and then the piece with the big screws gets turned and everything is fucked up now. I got the strings on but now theyre bouncing off the frets and its all out whack. THANKS A FUCKING LOT DUDE! Last time I ever watch some douchebag on youtube do anything with a guitar.
