I believe that when the flapper says universal it’s universal in its size. There are several types of flappers for different toilets and the universal would work as long as it’s the same size as the original.

Hello. Thanks for taking the time to make this great video. I can't seem to get the flapper off the pins (which are upright) that are holding the flapper on. I'm not sure if the rubber has hardened. It's almost like plastic but isn't. Do I have to cut it? It's an old American Standard that does 3g I think.

Great video and very informative. I do have a quick question. My white flapper has a chain that inserts inside a round white plastic float that is probably 1-1.5 inches in diameter. The chain continues through the white apparatus until it hooks onto the black arm that is depicted in your video. Will this still work if we use the one depicted in your video or do I need to purchase the one with that white plastic float? I appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks in advance.

@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff Ай бұрын
I encountered this last week at my niece's house, and problem is the flappers at Home depot don't have the rigid plastic support piece, so you try a regular flapper and it is too flexible and shuts down before the water can flush out of the tank, giving an incomplete flush. I told here for now, just hold down the handle until it flushes, and we need to get a new toilet, I prefer the American standard Champion Toilet, about $229.

I tell you sometimes those things are a real pain to get off and I feel like I'm gonna kill my fingers especially now that they're wet from the water and they're more sensitive. When I have done sometimes is get a small pair of pliers and just gently stretch out that little rubber eye that holds it onto that little post at the bottom and just twist it upward to get it off of the post but be very gentle not to break that plastic

My new Elger was installed by a mechanic , He reported every thing inside the tank was assembled. Thinking the tank fill valve was set correctly and it flushed OK, it was ignored, Then it was discovered the flapper started hanging up, preventing the flapper to close. the excess chain wrapped around itself and shortened the chain thus holding the flapper open. The chain was a fine close link stainless. note the chain should be trimmed to the exact length! That's not all the valve's float was also guilty! The assembly was mounted very close to the rear wall of the tank. I noticed the interference fit, of the float trying to float to the shut off position. I placed the shaft of a plastic cotton swap against the wall of the tank and the top of the flow valve to permit the float to work properly. A near future event the mechanic will return and shut the water off and loosen the mounting of the fill valve and reposition to permit max clearance. Water closets have been produced for over two hundred years, still haven't got it right!

Mine is an old toilet in a 1956 house. It uses a toilet ball made by Fluidmaster. It leaks worse after you change it. I had to soak it in hot water from the coffeemaker and push it in before it cools down. I then filled the bowl with hot water from the sink. I put my oil-filled radiator next to the tank and covered it all with a fiberglass curtain. I let the heater run on high for 4 hours. The tank got up to 130°F. It sat there two hours before the water got cool. I left it overnight to shape to the hole. I used it the next day and it flushed okay. 🐀🐾

Need to see better how to fix the chain as our flapper top is broken and the chain slipped right out. Temp fix with a paper clip through a different part of the top of the flapper only worked once or twice. Also, how do you get the right chain length back? Bowl fills very little. Thanks! Heading to hardware store get new flapper, old one in hand, now.
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 2 жыл бұрын
A new flapper is a no brainer they're only $6. If the top of it broke off like that chances are the plastic was already degrading it must have been a really old flapper. You don't need to do anything with the chain in terms of adjusting the length, the what you do is it depends on where you hook it into which chain link that's how it sets the length of chain. So what I like to do is set it so that once the flapper is down and the hook is connected to the top of the flapper, the other end of the hook should hook up so that the chain is sort of intention but not too much tension that it would lift up the flapper.

The water supply line coming out of the wall that connects to the hose that leads up to your toilet has a valve on it. You turn off that valve in that cuts off the water supply to the toilet

How would you know that you only need to change that part and not the whole valve? Or just start there since it is cheapest?

how do i know how to find the correct flapper? mine is a weird one... pink rubber bulb with a separate black, hard plastic piece that connects to flapper top. i cannot find a flapper anywhere like it and not sure the universal would work. if it's just as simple as measuring the diameter of the hole then can i just get a universal with that diameter ?

The best thing you can do is bring the old flapper with you to Home Depot and get one of the universal flippers that comes the closest to it speak to a plumbing specialist there. Another thing you can do is start looking on the back of your inside of your tank usually you'll see model numbers either stamped on there or engraved in it and you can start looking up model numbers to see which model number you have and there are always sites online that can get you the parts for your model number and brand name
