Couldn’t agree more! A colleague of mine had her battery changed in a marketplace and they ruined the case back. When she complained they said it didn’t matter as “the scratches were only on the back of the watch”.

Hi Kalle, many Seiko quartz divers 7548 have been killed by the mall battery change when the screwdriver slips and cuts the coil. Would like to see you repair/service a Seiko vintage Dive watch in the future. Keep well from New Zealand

There are 19 quartz watches in my house ..........guess who gets the battery changing jobs 😒 although I don't treat quartz with any less care than mechanical watches, if not more so, as you've correctly pointed out the electrical components are VERY delicate, so upper most care needs to be used. An excellent video Kalle. Notes of the cheep battery warnings people should take heed. As for the mechanical watches there are 24.

I really appreciate how you are so passionate about anything that can keep good time , irrespective of its origin/escapement/etc. I think that with comsumables, e.g batteries, oils, etc you should use one of the most expensive ones that you can afford. I like to say that, I won't buy the Rolls Royce but I do want the Bently! Even with a cheapish movement, why not treat it to some good consumables and let it be the best that it can be?

I’ve seen people wait many years after their quartz watch died, ask a change of battery but time made its ravage with acid. Change them when they go kaput, the longer you wait the more damage occur!

Thanks for the always informational videos. Could you do a video on temperature adjusted quartz movements? They interest me a lot as they are amazing value and often are accurate to +-5 seconds a YEAR! I could send in a HAQ King Quartz 9923 if you don't have a example, its a very unique watch with a highly decorated dual quartz movement.

Dank je wel Kalle voor deze film. Could you eventually save the movement? And if so, how did you do it? You're not a fan of Renata, but a lot of (Swiss) quartz watches have Renata batteries. I just replaced my Tissot Touch with a Renata, because there was a Renata put in by Tissot Switserland.... Groetjes, Hans Peter P.S. Do you prefer comments in English or Dutch?

The electrolyte in modern batteries is an alkali, not an acid. The first thing you have to do is neutralise the chemicals. Swab it out with a mild sodium bicarbonate solution, followed by distilled water, followed by IPA to dry it. If the electrolyte gets into the coil or the moving works, the whole movement is toast and beyond all but the most detailed repair. If the gold coating on the battery terminals is gone, treat them with tiniest coating of contact grease to prevent further electrolytic corrosion. If the PCB has been damaged, after cleaning and drying coat it in some clear lacquer. If the coil or moving works is already corroded or you contaminate them with cleaning solutions you might as well replace the movement. Damaged battery contacts will require inspection and treatment on each subsequent battery change. I agree with Kalle here. Having the coil next to battery clip is a design flaw, since a simple slip of the tool will take the coil out. If you take the back off a watch and see this arrangement you should be hearing warning sirens going off in your head.

I have a Rotary 9ct gold case quartz watch which is impossible to change the battery. Unlike other watches the back does not come off and instead the face and strap comes off leaving the front of the watch flush with the back case and no way to get it out to change the battery .... can anyone help? thank you in advance 🙂

It is probably a two piece winding stem. place a tweezer between the case and the crown and wiggle the crown outwards. it will come off. Than blow air in the tube with some force and the crystal will pop out. It is called a monocase. May the force be with you. Kalle

Well, I agree it's not good to put cheap battery in a watch. But I have to say Varta is a good quality battery, probably more expensive than maxell or energizer actually. It's not what I personally use but in no way a bad brand of battery. From my experience every battery can leak regardless of the brand. But yeah the lower quality you get, the higher the chance of it liking will be. And actually more importently don't let you dead battery in your watch too long because it increase exponentially the chance of it liking as well.

Do SR type batts (silver oxide enhanced alkaline) leak less than LR type (standard zinc manganese alkaline)? I think it barely makes sense to use the latter, maybe you can use them if you replace the batts yourself and keep a good eye on not letting your watches stay depleted, but it's scandalous that someone who charges even just several € for a service would not use the better type. SR should also keep screen contrast in LCD watches more consistently and last longer in all watches by far.

Varta is a well known german brand and i would trust them no matter what he says. They are quality and he is ignorant of the brand. All brands can leak and i think this watch had bad luck.
