I've said it before, and I'll probably say it again, but every time I have something to do on my XJ, you have a video for it, from alternator to NSS, to frame stiffeners. I'm SO glad I picked the Cherokee as my mechanic-learning car! thank you.

+BleepinJeep : I spent the weekend changing a steering knuckle, installing brand new wheel hubs, a new NSS, and a new full radiator, flushed my transmission fluid, and got an that engine running after 3 years of it staying dormant and being stripped for parts. Next weekend is swapping the alternator, a rear brake line, and installing a custom magnaflow exhaust/muffler. I'm a software engineer who knew nothing about car mechanic before I bought 2 XJ to make one 3 years ago, and I'd have never gained the confidence and knowledge I now have, had I not discovered your channel. I'm now up to planning an exocage. So, truly, thank you! :)

Thanks Bleepinjeep. My daughters 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport had an issue with the alternator. The local garage wanted to charge me $381 to replace it. After watching this video, we figured we could do it ourselves. Purchased a rebuilt one for $90 and installed in less than 2 hours total. Only 2 bolts to remove. So far you're video's have save me more than $500. Keep up the great work.

Hey... your videos have helped a bunch over the years... Let me give you this tip. I spent a half hour trying to get the alternator out the bottom as you show. I hope the Good Lord forgives me for some of the choice words I said while trying. Finally, frustrated as all get out, I got up from underneath the car and was looking down at the alternator and I had a little epiphany. Take out the battery, remove the battery box (two nuts) and you can easily pull the alternator right out through the top!

Great video as always...some differences in my experience: Straight 6, 4.0. My electrical connections where different than yours. All were fastened with a nut, none were plug-in. There was a top connection with one nut. Below, I had to remove four nuts--two were side-by-side at "6 o'clock"...then one at 7 o'clock and another at 5 o'clock. No big deal, all accessible from top or underneath. As for access in removing/replacing, my alt was under my AC unit. I simply removed my air box...alt went out/in with no issues and no "persuasion." As for the belt, much easier to loosen the four AC unit bolts...tip it forward to remove belt...do this in reverse to re-attach belt. No messing with tension bolts, power steering box, etc.

Thanks for the great video. I am not much of a mechanic... actually hate it... but you did give the encouragement to attempt. Sure enough, I had a heck of a time between getting it out, getting to bolts ( not much of a tool supply ) but I did get it done. That feeling of accomplishment is well worth all the choice words I used while doing it. Thanks so much and keep up the great work !!!

Great video with nice clear instructions. Steps are clear to assisting anyone with a jeep project (alternator replacement). Also, a great "KEY" note about cause that occur when alternator over works and cause is due to a bad battery most times. So, people due the base check first. //A2B//

Great video. Thanks. A couple comments. On my 95 XJ Country I had to remove the air box (stock) to get easy access to the belt tensoner. I also had four PS pump bolts. I found it a lot easier to access the top bolt on the alternator by pulling out the battery and battery tray. Finally, I had to remove two alternator mounting brackets to actually be able to remove the alternator. All-in-all, not nearly as easy as yours but still not too difficult once I figured out what I had to do.

So I got to that install the new part-part, and just went real slow, got the top bolt and the bottom is trickier and the trick is, what I learned when I got my first Pinto, don't force a bolt, if you can thread it in a couple turns BY HAND. So i did that with the bottom bolt, took an hour, Anyway, 14v to the battery, Yay!

PS: Your camera is steady and logical so it's easy to watch..unlike most of mine; but I'm apoet, you jnow? On my '87 'Wag' the hard part is reaching all the bolts around the pwr-strg pump, it is very crowded in there and every bolt takes just the right wrench..plus patience!!!!!! And somehow the serp-belt never seems to relax enough until finally I re-discover that it does get loose (I switched to a donor radiator earlier this year, and replaced the water pump, same ordeals). The only thing is it's elecxtrical which is my nemesis..two wires for me is one wire too many and I triangulated my diagnosis to be as sure as I could be that it was the alternator aND NOT A FUSABLE LINK (or some other thing).

good deal, just a thought though, my xj is a 99, I've got a single bolt that runs through the idler pully to tension the belt, that being said, I have have the exact same issue, my voltage keeps dropping to 9 volts. I was thinking it was going to be a bigger pain to change it, you made it look rather easy, I'll have the part waiting on me when I get home so I can swap it out, I think I'll also do like you did and take it to be tested just to make sure. thanks a ton for the info, you've got a new subcriber, lol the hammer is a persuasion tool.

I had a rough time getting a new alternator for my 99 Classic. The one they gave me just wouldn't fit in the hole, it was up against the block and wouldn't line up with the holes. So I took my old one and the new one back to the store and the guy at Autozone (a buddy from high school and the main reason I get parts at AZ) finally figured out that I needed a smaller 90 amp alternator for a Wrangler.

well either that new alternator was bad or your voltage regulator is bad. do you know if you have an internal or external voltage regulator? Either way when you start it up you need to check the voltage with a meter to make sure it's not too high.

The first clue I had, 2 days ago, that my alternator was going bad, was when my transmission shifter felt like an awful grinding machine gun. My next clue was when I lost all power steering. My next clue was when I popped the hood and saw that the belt had jumped. My last clue was when I reached down, brushed against the alternator pulley and the pulley fell off.

I loved your video, and I'm trying desperately to do this job on my wife's 200 4.0L Straight 6 Cherokee Sport, but I'm about to have a stroke trying to get the lower mounting bolt for the alternator off. I had no problem at all with the top belt or the belt itself, but the angle and location of that lower bolt makes it almost totally impossible to access, let alone turn. My knuckles are cut and bleeding, yet I haven't been able to get even the first breaking free turn from that damn bolt. What can I do?

Thanks...I'll be doing this tomorrow. My transmission light came on, the speedo needle was going crazy and it was throwing P1698. Fluid was good and it shifted fine and I was going to try to figure that out this weekend, but on the way home today, the Check Gauges came on and the alternator dropped to 9. Battery is pretty new and alternator is pretty old, so I'm guessing that's been causing my issue. Damn Jeep hasn't been to a garage in years...I take it in for new tires and an alignment and the next day all this crap happens....suspicious hahaha...

well first, just because you fuel tank is full doesnt mean you cant have a fuel issue... if your pump was bad or your fuel pressure regulator or your fuel filter, all of those would cause issues too. But In your case I would start by testing the fuel pump ballast resistor, the cps, and giving your jeep a tune up. All of which I have videos on.

Good video. I replaced my alternator a week ago. Ended up getting stuck in a deep mud hole and guess the alternator got in the mud. Started getting check gauges and only 12 Volts before it dropped to 0v. Well, I keep wheeling for a little bit then went to the car wash and it wouldn't run because I deplete the battery. Got pulled home by a friend I was with. Only thing most people don't like about the 4.0, the low alternator location, might have to do a mod or something so I don't repeat.

Recently I've had intermittent starting problems with my Cherokee. I know it's not a fuel problem, as it happens even when the tank is full, and it has a new battery. It cranks over, but won't start. After I try for a few minutes, it sometimes starts. When I'm cranking it, I notice the volt meter goes down to around 9-10 volts and when idling or driving, it goes up to 14. Could it be an alternator issue that is causing this? If not, what else? Maybe a short somewhere?

I have a 1993 4x4 Country and it's much easier to replace the alternator by removing the battery and tray. This way it slides in and out with no problem from the top. This is probably the way it was intended to be replaced. Trying to drop from below on my vehicle seems nearly impossible without either removing the alternator mount, fan and shroud, or AC drier.

Every video I have seen on this topic always glosses over the wire connection removal from the alternator. You make it look so easy. You don't show how the wire harness clips on to the alternator. Bad mistake, but other than that good video.

Well it's pretty straight forward. if you can't figure out and alternator plug, maybe you should stop working on cars and take it to a shop.

No, you totally miss the point. It is more than just a plug the is removed, it is also a couple other screws that are attached the the alternator. My point is the removal of the screws has been left off of the video. So please don't sit on the internet and call people stupid or say the shouldn't work on cars because they are just so stupid. You wouldn't say that to my face because I would punch you in the mouth. So do not do that here, listen to my comments and respect everyone.

Purse would probably work on your weak ass, but I was thinking of the traditional back hand my self. Either way, you wouldn't say that kind of stuff in front of my face. Ha ha
