How often are you exhausted by being busy all the time, but not ever feeling very productive? Do you get frustrated that you’re not closer to living the life you dreamed of?
If so, get ready to download some KNOWLEDGE that’s going to CHANGE how you live.
One of the ways your brain is REMARKABLE is that it is always searching for ways to conserve energy by being more EFFICIENT. And one of the most important ways it does this is by steering you toward what you already know.
And what you already know are your HABITS.
The science behind HABITS and PRODUCTIVITY is a fascinating topic. Once you understand how habits are formed, you can apply this knowledge to your life and create MASSIVE POSITIVE CHANGES.
This week, I’m excited to discuss exactly how you can do that with one of the TOP EXPERTS in this field.
CHARLES DUHIGG is a Pulitzer-prize-winning reporter and the author of “Smarter Faster Better,” about the science of productivity, and “The Power of Habit,” about the science of habit formation in our lives, companies, and societies. He’s also a veteran journalist who has written for the New York Times, The New Yorker Magazine and is a frequent contributor the shows such as This American Life, N.P.R., The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, and Frontline.
He’s spent years studying the NEUROLOGICAL UNDERPINNINGS of habits and productivity, looking closely at HOW HABITS ARE FORMED, the importance of CUES, the psychology of NEAR MISSES (Hint: pay close attention to what Charles has to say about gambling in Las Vegas), and why it’s important to create and enjoy REWARDS when you engage in positive habits.
If you’re a business owner, top executive, or leader of any kind, you’ll want to hear Charles’s take on how KEYSTONE HABITS can change an organization. As you can already figure out, the right organizational habits can not only lead to huge increases in positive work culture and your BOTTOM LINE, but they can often spell the difference between whether a business ultimately succeeds or fails as well.
In practical terms, Charles will also tell you HOW TO CREATE NEW HABITS, engage in the practice of DIRECTED FOCUS, and why STARTING SMALL is one of the keys to making sure new habits stay locked in.
If you’re concerned about efficiency in your life (as you should be!), Charles Duhigg is going to teach you how to SAVE TIME AND MONEY, be more PRODUCTIVE, and GAIN CONTROL so you can lead a HAPPIER and more BLISSFUL life.
And that’s a HABIT we should all strive for…
0:00 Intro

This is why living alone is waaaaay underrated. Living with other people is like living in a chaotic pen full of crazed animals. Everyone's running around you, you don't control what's in the refrigerator, you don't control the expenses in the house, you can't throw out useless stuff, you're constantly interrupted, someone always nags, and the only way to have a little bit of peace is to wake up 3 hours before everyone else does. I love living alone, the habits got fixed overnight the moment I moved. I finally got the schedule I always wanted, lost 30 pounds without even trying, and finally had my peace. Want habits? Live alone!

This is so true. I needed way less willpower when I was living alone. I know my food cravings and I never stocked any of them in the fridge. But when I transferred house, I couldn't control what's going in the fridge. I'm not blaming my housemates though. I guess I just need to develop new habits in the environment I'm currently in.

Love the exercise he shared about how to identify cues - thats powerful stuff! Here's my notes in case any of you didn't pick it up: The next few time you feel the instinct write down 5 things (habits fall into these categories 95% of the time)
 1. Certain time of the day
 2. particular place
 3. certain emotion
 4. Presence of certain other people
 5. Preceding behavior that has become ritualized

I have 10 kids, I have been competed in Fintness before, I have had habit to train before I got my kids, but now when I have so many kids its dosnt work out when I train after workday and my wife wasnt happy with that eather. So I had to promise that I dont train when the kids are wake, I had to start to train before work, and now this is habit what I do 5 times per week. Now I know that it the best to train before work, then I get great energy for whole day plus I can spend more time with my family

I have read the book, but the interview really helps reinforce the principles. In answer to your questions... Way too often and yes... at 49, after being a pastor and a counselor to so many other people, I feel like I have not effectively set myself up for maxing out my life. Thanks for reminding me of some of the most important reasons to set those habits.

Wow..This is so good!!!I am on a weightloss journey and my running thought on the treadmill this morning was about the correlation with making better habits in my overall health and how I will continue to build and make better habits in other areas of my life and how that will improve my financial habits.I believe wealth and health are so so strongly connected.I have been overweight my entire adult life and I am not financially where I would like to be and I look at the big factor of how bad my nutrition and exercise habits have been..My thoughts are,I haven't been disciplined with my health and I am sure that leads to other bad habits I am making and areas I am not disciplined. I HAVE been on my journey for a month and half.Eating better, exercising more and am starting to see how it is improving my mindset already by creating other good habits in my life.I am starting to become more and more grateful everyday, Journaling more, becoming more intentional, feeling amazing and thinking what else can I improve on..This is so powerful. That's for the great message you delivered today.

This interview is especially for me! I'm aware of the habit loop (cue-craving ,routine, reward) however since I suffer from low level OCD it's really hard for me to break my bad habit loops. What a great story about Fabreze!!! Habits are neurological cravings-what a great definition! I'm always working on improving my "bad" habits by trying to change my routine or behavior. This is definitely my next book to read-"The Power of Habit". Thanks Ed for all of your amazing interviews! and thanks Charles Duhigg for sharpening my understanding about changing my behavior or routine in order to gain control back #MAXOUT from Israel

I have been studying my habits recently to change them and im actively changing my habits to 1st a better close alternative like instead of a full cup of coffee everday make it every 2 days which is harder but drinking half a cup everyday is much easier so do what's easy first and gradually change your habits and most importantly PLEASE don't think if it's unnecessary to think basically just do if you dont have to think to change your habit then simply don't like for example you want to turn from lazy to energetic which is your problem the solution is working out don't think about working out it's a physical activity then just do the activity no matter what comes across your mind just ignore it because you know this is the only solution and your mind is distracting you because it's new and hard and scary so just focus and don't think because habits happen without you even being mentally aware of it they just happen

I wish I could have any reward. I have no joy, hope, pleasure or happiness. I feel empty. Alone. Pensive sadness. I can't get out of bed. No appetite. I listen to these shows to see if it will help spark any life in me I have left. But it doesn't. I just want the emotional pain to stop. I'm so tired. I think my reward will be when I close my eyes and God takes me from this world. Depression is hell. So I rather go to heaven.

Great interview! Thank you both for taking the time to make this happen! When you were talking about the neurological response to habits, it made me think of Dr. Joe Dispenza’s work where he discusses how our bodies get addicted to the chemicals that are created from developing habits. The habits can be beneficial or not beneficial but once you repeat it for so long, the body craves the chemical release that comes from performing the habit. So interesting! Thanks again for all the great info!

This was definitely a great episode. However I will always feel everything we do is always choice. And at anytime, at any point we can do differently because we choose to. Yes habits form for all sorts of reasons and yeah mostly because of some rewards but addiction sucks. And after a while the addiction is not pleasing and can be so so hard to break free of and be happy again. I love all of your stuff, rock on, maxout, follow your bliss.

Its basically repeating something over a longer period of time in the same way turns into a behaviour a habit it becomes programmed in your mind but that something can still happen only once and be okay and there is certain factors that makes it easier to turn into a habit like how much you can repeat it its the volume that counts so getting addicted to drugs for example its basically very easy to do drugs so it becomes addictive and the easier it is to be that the harder to quit whatever the addiction you got addiction is just a word to describe a strong habit sometimes its good like im addicted to books the choice slowly disappears the stronger the habit becomes but changing it is always a choice

Antisemitism lives in the foundations of human society and human nature. The human ego-the desire to enjoy at the expense of others and nature-evolves throughout history and during a person’s life. The more it grows, the more it feels an opposite force also dwelling within. That opposite force is called a “point in the heart.” Contrary to our egoistic desires that wish solely to absorb pleasures into themselves, the point in the heart is a desire that has potential to develop into a desire that loves, gives and positively connects to others. The point in the heart is also known as the seed of the soul, as we can develop it to discover our soul-the connection that underlies those very points. The realization of the potential encased in this small point of desire is the ability to rise above the human ego, where instead of detaching from one another through our growing egoism, i.e. increasingly prioritizing self-benefit over benefiting others, we instead prioritize the benefit of others and positive human connection. The point in the heart is the opposite of our egoistic nature. There are people who host only the negative egoistic force, and there are people who have both the negative egoistic force and the positive altruistic force. When both positive and negative forces coexist in us, then we become called “Jews” or “Israel” according to our inner essence. Likewise, if we solely host the negative egoistic force with no revelation yet of the point in the heart, then we are called “nations of the world” according to that essence. We underwent several stages of development throughout history. The point in the heart first surfaced throughout human society in ancient Babylon. The Babylonians who felt the inner urge to seek something deeper in life beyond the earthly egoistic desires joined Abraham, who taught a method for how to nurture the point in the heart in order to rise above the ego and positively connect. Abraham organized the Babylonians who wanted to study with him into a group, and he called this group “Israel,” which is made up of the words “Yashar Kel” (“straight to God”), i.e. people who aim themselves directly at the attainment of nature’s upper force of love, bestowal and connection, which is opposed to the force existing in human beings, the force of reception. Since Abraham’s time, the two groups-Israel and the nations of the world-have undergone much development. Some from the Israel camp left the group to pursue their natural egoistic inclinations, i.e. with an inclination to the nations of the world, while some from the nations of the world felt that they possess a special closeness and connection, which draws them to Israel. In other words, Jews are not a nationality, but they are people who host the point in the heart, which associates them with the positive force of nature, and which is opposite to the egoistic force that we are born and raised with by nature. The source of antisemitism is in the contrast and conflict between the two opposite desires of our inborn egoism and the point in the heart that can develop our ability to rise above the human ego.
