Here is how you change your CVT Transmission Fluid and potentially fix CVT Whining and Belt Slipping. I was able to talk to Nissan and gather the correct information necessary to change your CVT Fluid without expensive tools. Nissan charges around $300 just for a simple fluid change, so here is how you can change your own CVT Transmission Fluid for way less $$!
Check out my new guide on changing CVT Transmission Fluid: • How To Change Nissan C...
TOOLS needed:
- Jack Stands and a Jack (That are able to support at least 1 1/2 tons)
- Mechanic Gloves
- Transmission Fluid that is compatible with your CVT
- Lint Free Napkins
- 19mm Socket / Ratchet
- 5mm Allan
- Drain Pan (To Hold and Measure Transmission Fluid)
- Empty Oil Container (To Measure Transmission Fluid)
- Long Oil Funnel
- Flat Head Screwdriver
If this video helped you in any way, shape or form, please comment, like and subscribe
DISCALIMER: Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects and all DIY projects are purely “at your own risk”. As with any DIY project, unfamiliarity with the tools and process can be dangerous.

John L If the vehicle has never had a transmission fluid change in a long time and has a lot of miles, it’s recommended that the fluid not be changed because this can lead to potential SLIPPING of the transmission.

Jackstands must be used on a hard surface - concrete is best. If you just can't manage that, use large pieces of ¾" plywood under each jackstand. 6 ton rated jackstands should be used under cars and light trucks. Not so much for strength but for their wide footprint. They cost a little more but nowhere near as much as ambulance and emergency room charges. Try to find stands that have little flat feet welded to each leg so they don't damage asphalt. Stacking wheels with tires under the vehicle is an extra safety measure.

You might want to also consider changing the filter as well. I think that is an excellent idea to go back over the fluid after 50-100 miles. Additionall, you can get a Bluetooth adapter for the OBD2/service port and one of many scan apps, such as torque or stand alone scan apps just for transmissions, so that you can more precisely monitor the transmission fluid temperature and mirror a dealer, fluid change.

Nice video, just did the fluid change on my '14 Nissan Murano. Used the same Castrol Fluid, however I used a Fluid Extractor Pump instead of going under the car. @90,000 km the CVT Fluid was dark green/brown and 4 quarts came out. For $85 I highly recommend using an External Fluid Pump to extract the oil for Transmissions.

I contacted Castrol, they recommend doing a FULL flush. So that their fluid doesn't mix with any factory fluid. Like on my Civic it's about 8 qrts. So I simply did 2 drain and fills. I used the Castrol universal ATF/CVT fluid. What a difference that made. I swear it's better than the Honda stuff! It's a process, I did mine per the Honda factory repair manual. Waiting for the fans to come on with that tiny 1.5 T took forever. It was well worth it though.

Ahhh thank you so much for showing me how to take that cap off. Now I see that my Nissan Sentra 2018 probably doesn’t have a dipstick. But I couldn’t get that cap off. I took out the coolant tank so I could have easier access. I’m most positive I need to have the transmission fluid changed because my RPM jumped randomly while I was driving on the freeway. I then thought that it could have been something else. But the way it jolted when I hit the reverse. Thank you for this video. I wanted to check my transmission fluid but I’ll just take it to a mechanic for them to check.

I work for a Nissan dealership. He did it wrong. Just drain the cvt fluid and be sure to remove that little self leveling tube as well to drain it faster. Be sure to use the right color fluid because it will void your warranty. Nissan use NS-2 ( green in color ) or NS-3 ( blue in color). When you have the fluid drained out, you can use a very small 1/4 inch wratch with a swivel head & a 10mm socket to remove the tube from on top of the cvt fluid pan ( be surenot to burn yourself ), it is right on top where the drain plug is. Be sure NOT to lose the rubber o-ring that is on it. After it all drained out. Put the drain plug with the self leveling tube as well & the tube back on and make sure that o-ring is on and tighten it back on the pan with the 10mm socket. Add 5 qts of cvt fluid, then start the car. Run it till the cvt gets hot then drain the cvt fluid again. Do not remove the self leveling tube at this time, just let it drain till it stops. Then put the drain plug back on and make sure the drain plug has a new crush ring. Then go back and put the cap back on the cvt tube. Nissan highly recommends to do a cvt service every 30k miles.

Cristian, this video is awesome; thank you for showing us how to change the transmission oil, good job body. Let me tell you what’s going on with my 2013 Nissan Sentra. When I start driving it everything is normal but once it reaches at 40mph it feels that accelerates and feels like the overdrive activates it gets stuck for 15 seconds and then it goes back to normal then it does it again once it reaches 70mph. Four mechanics had checked it and everyone gives a different opinion; from transmission to sensors to filters; what is funny though is that the scanner is not reading any code. What should I do any suggestions please. Thank you

Have a question. Have a 13 rogue with 192k on it. Started having some light hesitation on acceleration from a stop. Little jerks, maybe 2 to 3. Get up to speed fine. Way home from work last week had a very low whine at 70 on the turnpike. Took my exit and coming to a stop it jerked at below 10 coming to a stop. Accelerating it did the same thing, more jarring than the previous issue but after 10 to 15 mph it ran fine no issues. Possible causes? Bad valve body? Ordered one going to see if that helps. Speed sensor?

Check the fluid for metallic specs or a burned smell. If it smells a bit burned that's fine. Get OEM transmission fluid from Nissan. Yes you can get NS-3 or NS-2 at an auto parts store (check your manual to see which transmission fluid you need) - but I recommend getting OEM. I used the auto parts store version in my video but that was my risk and it worked perfectly fine. Also, to get the most fluid out; Change the fluid like I did in the video, drive for about 150-300 miles, then do a second transmission fluid change, that way you get as much as the old fluid out.

No, if the pump is bad then your transmission is overheating and causing it to whine. Changing the fluid wont keep it from over heating since it's not circulating in the first place.

Most of these modern CVT Transmissions have overflow plugs. After the temperature of the fluid has reached it's specified level, (make sure the vehicle is level, on jack stands, and a container is under the over flow) you can remove the overflow plug, and let it drain until it runs down to a minute drip.

There are 2 transmission filters seems useless to change the fluid and leave potentially clogged filters in there

Thank god my Juke came with a Dipstick but its still the same procedure for it, I don't trust the Oil stick cause it can slid into pan further and give a false reading.. A good rule of thumb is to measure what comes out and put back the same amount.. Nice Vid though..

The best way to remove all the old fluid is a flush and you can do it yourself. I do mine from the radiator return line pretty simple process.
