Great job! Straight forward and to the point. I saved me $$$$ by telling me that I needed to lower the filter more to take it out. You said to remove the shelf if necessary. I was twisting, turning and yanking on it. Basically, I almost broke the whole unit and that would have been a major pain the replace,....and $$$. I realized at that moment that I should probably get on KZfaq because the directions that came with the replacement filter were useless. So, THANK YOU!!! I took out the top shelf,...lowered the filter a little more and it slid right out. You are awesome!

Thanks for doing this. I got one of these over complicated design disasters with the house I just bought, and I left behind a 1980's GE Spacemaker which was a way simpler and better fridge and still worked like a beast. I couldn't get the air filter cover off without breaking it, or so I thought, and now I realize it was just another thoughtless design. But now I know what to do.

Thanks for sharing - have to use filtered water to make ivermectin - hydroxichlorequine - quercetin recipe for covid. So I had to change the filter and it would not turn. Your video helped me to change it w/o damaging it and to continue with my recipe.

My Kenmore doesn't seem to have that square filter, even though the manual says air filter is a part. Do they put the filters anywhere else on different models?

Usually it's in the back wall of the fridge, or behind a utility bin. What model fridge do you have?

Hello! For the water filter, I was able to remove it but I can’t get the new one to latch on. I am using force but it won’t budge. Am I doing something wrong?

Double check that the replacement filter matches. I once got a wrong one in the right box. What you can also try is put the old one in and see if that fits just fine to get a feel for the force required.

When installing a new filter are you supposed to pour out the first couple of glasses?

You can. You will see residue from the activated charcoal. It’s perfectly safe to drink. My wife won’t drink it, so we just water the plants (or I drink it). It actually helps to clear out toxins in your body, but won’t have any major effect either way. It isn’t required but they often mention it in the instructions.

I changed the water filter on my Kenmore Elite but can't get the red change water filter light to go off - I've held it for 3 seconds and longer multiple times - I went with an off-brand from Amazon and didn't know if that might be the reason?

No, the fridge doesn't know what filter you use. On some models, you have to hold down two different buttons to reset. I'd consult the user manual if you can find it. Or at least post what your specific model is (sticker usually found in fridge).

Mike Mu Thanks Mike, finally got it to go out - i hit so many combinations of buttons I can’t tell you which one worked but I think it was the one that said press it 5 times in so many seconds.

Give it a bit more force. Twist both directions.

hi idk if you’re still having this issue but ive been struggling for the last day to open the cover. turns out you can grab a hammer and a rag and put the rag over the cover to prevent damage and firmly tap the hammer on the upper right corner of the filter to get it to turn left! hope this helps!

@@lilyparrish5980 you are officially my absolute hero for this suggestion! I've Never been able to get that cover off (Or back on) by myself, and it was hard even for my husband. Until Now! I just used a potholder to protect the cover, tapped it with my trusty hammer and Voila! It popped right off. After changing the filter, I was able to get the assembly back on w/much less effort than in past. (Ha, I am hoping this "loosened things up" so it will be easier next time.) Thank you!

@@MikeMu Thanks for your video. I know it was a year ago, but I sure needed to see that the air filter cover really does sort of "fly" off - it Does take some force. I ended up doing what @Lily Parrish tried 2 weeks ago, according to this reply-strand. W/o the "hammer-tap" I would still be struggling with it, while my refrigerator continued to lose cold. Together, you have me all set for another 6 months, with new water filter (the original brand) and same with the air filter. Thank you!

Had difficulty pulling old water filter out. I tried pulling it out with channel lock pliers but it will not budge. I look at the replacement filter and saw that it has a wide tab at the bottom, wider than the slot in the refrigerator filter housing. So to clear this narrow slot I had to first move the bottom of the old filter down so the wide tab at the filter bottom would clear the narrow slot on the filter housing, then pull it straight out.

Depends on what goes on in the fridge. But I’d do it at least every time the water filter gets replaced. I feel like the filter is mostly for odor control so let your nose be your guide.

Right. You still have to reset. I show that in my video for my fridge. Yours may be slightly different. Do you know the model# of your fridge?

I just put in a Cheap water filter and air filter, next thing I know a few days later the ice maker stopped making ice, yes the switch is till on, and the fridge and freezer are slowly getting warmer. the settings on the control panel are set to -4 and 37 but it's still not cooling. I took out the cheap air filter thinking it was blocking the flow of air and still no difference. what would you suggest, I have the same Kenmore Elite as this videio.

Does your water still flow from the dispenser on the door? It just sounds to me your system is clogged/frost build-up somehow, which may or may not be related to the filters you changed. If it is clogged, you need to unplug your fridge and let it all defrost for a bit. Take your bins out in the freezer section and see if you have ice build-up. Let that all thaw out. Do this soon.

@@MikeMu the water still flows to the dispenser, I noticed a few nights ago that there was no ice. I thought the water line to the ice maker was clogged because of the new cheap water filter, and as I was researching it (googling videos) I noticed the freezer was getting warmer, Ice cream was melting, and stuff like that. OK, I unplugged it for a few hours and it warmed up to 61 degrees. then plugged it back in and it took a long time but it cooled down to 57, not much but something. a repair guy came out and said the compressor is bad, even though it's cooling some. The refrigerator is 9 years old. In your opinion is it worth replacing the compressor or crying my way to the store and buying a new one?

I would fix it. Lasting 9 years is pretty good. However… best to talk to a repair person about the longevity of these. We had ours fixed too, but much earlier than yours. So far it’s fine in the second one…

My refrigerator water filter ight does not come on and I've tried to push the reset and think that will turn it on but to no avail. I cannot reset because it is as if the water filter is not working. How do you turn this on to begin working? I know how to push to reset but it is not on. Thank you, Bunny

Bunny, can you share the make and model of your fridge? Usually you can find this info on a sticker in the fridge. On most recent model units it requires holding buttons down for a few seconds. Sometimes it requires pressing two at a time or a combo of both. But to really know we have to look at your particular model. Also, usually the light only comes on when its time to change the water filter. So if its off, that means its reset.

Does water come out properly? You may be hearing the water filling / going through the filter for the first time. That will go away. (I presume you followed the filter’s instructions? Sometimes it tells you to soak it, etc).

Jo, did you figure this out? Some fridges will tell you what to press on the console. It usually involves a combination of holding some keys in for a few seconds.

You mean water filter for the ice maker? Its the same filter. In this model it goes through the water filter first, so the ice has the same quality as your water coming out from the fridge with a properly installed one.

@@sushiitron1 Typically no. It adds additional cost and complexity. So it'd be the premium brands you can't just buy at your local electronics big box retailers that may have the option.

no one can answer my important question. When you open the left door the flap flips closed. When you close the left door the flap is now in the closed position. You have to open the right door in order to pull the flap back to the open position. What does that door flap do????????? Does it need to be in the open position pulled towards me? Or can it stay in the closed position? Please help!

You're talking about the fridge door on a french door style fridge right? Its to seal the door. If its not working properly, that's a different matter. I'm afraid I don't have experience fixing it.

@@MikeMu Yes. The left side french door has a seal door flap. But if you open the left door the flap closes. When you close the door, the flap is closed. You can feel cold air coming out between the doors. So I open the right door and pull the flap back open then close the left door first. Then the right door and no more cold air coming out. WTF??? Am I doing something wrong?

Give it a little bit more force when pulling it down. I found that's the issue my sister-in-laws have - being too gentle with it.

Same happened to me but something Mike said in his video "you might have to remove the shelf to get it lower", and that did the trick! The filter cartridge only comes out at a certain angle. No need to force it, just point it in the right downward direction et voila!

How important is it to change the carbon filter? No matter how hard I try to turn it, that thing will not come off.

All it does is capture odors. You can do the same thing by opening a few boxes of baking soda in the fridge, and replacing them. Granted there is no air to circulate so it may not be as effective in the short term.
