The John Deere guy told me to fill the new oil filter with new oil before installing? I noticed you didn't do that. Do I need to put oil in the new filter and if so how much?

That is a much debated topic. Some say if you pre-fill, oil gets through the system faster upon startup, but oil pressure builds in like a second once the engine is started. My opinion, people pour the oil right in the center, which is the unfiltered side, so if there is debris from factory in there, you are putting that direct to the engine components. At least pouring it into the case it should filter all that out. Probably not the best answer, but I don’t see a need. Been changing oil myself since I started driving, never pre-filled. My Dad has never pre-filled, never had an issue. Plus unless the filter sits upright, you are just going to spill oil everywhere.

I thought the same thing about when I screw the filter in sideways the oil spills out. My first time doing an oil change so now I know. Thanks Josh.

How long do I run the engine

to warm it up? a couple minutes should be plenty. It just helps, you don't have to, it will just drain for a bit longer if you don't, and some more sediment may remain over warming it.

Can’t get the drain cap off- to tight!
