Mercedes service schedule says the rear differential fluid needs to be changed every 20k miles. That's a lot! The good news is that this is a pretty easy job. Probably easier than doing the engine oil.

Thanks for making this video! I have a 2019 GLA 45 AMG, and, according to the MBZ spec sheet, the correct fluid is 75W-85. Mine actually has the Dynamic Plus Package, which has a limited slip differential; again, although in a different column on the spec sheet, mine also calls for 75W-85. However, I really only see the 75W-90 LS (LS standing for limited slip) on the market around here (Bay Area, CA). I see from your video that you also used 75W-90 LS (by Mobile 1). Since you did the fluid change, have you learned anything more about the appropriateness of going with 75W-90 LS over 75W-85? Thanks in advance!

This is one of those "Best to do what I say, not what I do" situations. ;) Meaning, I'm saying it is definitely best to go with what the factory says. Their engineers know more than what I know about this. I think if weight is off by a little, it is probably ok. I think the most important thing is what additives are in the fluid, or shouldn't be in the fluid. I had no difference or problems with the Mobil w/ LS.... BUT... for my most recent diff fluid change, I did end up getting the OEM fluid online (you can probably get at a dealer). It's expensive, but you don't need much of it anyway. So the cost doesn't really add up too much. In short, I just recommend going w/ OEM. Or whoever makes the fluid for MB.

sir, thank you for the video, i have a question, how many liters of oil i need for my CLA45 AMG 2014 W117 rear diff, and thanks

Half a liter. And the model should be C117, not W117.

Hi thanks for this guide very good and I was told it's something only the dealer can do. Do you drive this car? is it normal for it to get a little kick or bump sound at low idle speeds like in traffic or when approaching a red light? I always feel and hear a knock from under the car at the back. Wonder if a rear oil change will make this disappear.
@ruffytdog2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, This is my daily driver, so yup I do drive this. Kick or bump sounds would more likely be transmission related, or something as simple as something rolling around in your trunk. I would probably also check transmission and the rear diff. The service schedule for these are relatively often compared to a 'regular' car. about 20-30k intervals (depending on what your service indicator determines).
@randomcar21902 жыл бұрын
Another thing to try is to reset the transmission adaptive learning. A google search should get you to the procedure. I haven't tried it, but it looks like it is worth a try.

@mike, did you get to the bottom of this kick/bump? I have a gla220d 4matic and having exactly as you drscribe this bump/kick sound at low speeds and when I turn. Research seems to point to rear diff and an oil change....wondering if you came right?

I had 2 GLA 45 AMG, one bought with 10k miles and the other with 30k mi. The one with 30k mi. had the thumping sound and slight bump feeling at low speeds. I changed the diff. oil on both and it minimized this on the 30k mi. GLA. This was about 2 years ago. I've sold the 30k mi. GLA since and kept the one that I got with 10k; now it has almost 30k mi. and has developed this behavior for the last couple of months. I just changed the diff. fluid on that one, and the sound and bump have completely gone away. Keep in mind that this is my impression after just a couple of miles of driving it. It may come back, but I figure that it is inherent to these DCT cars. Maybe something to do with the clutches engaging in the rear.

Same procedure for cla250?
@randomcar21903 жыл бұрын
Of course the front wheel drive CLA250 does not have a rear diff. For the 4matic, I don't know exactly. In general, rear diff fluid change is pretty easy. Just a drain and fill.

Sir~~ How to Change front Diff Fluid ????
@randomcar21905 ай бұрын
It's a transaxle type design. So the front axle is integrated with the transmission. Changing the transmission fluid will cover the front diff

(very expensive, ~$60 USD/bottle) I believe this is the correct one, 75W140 is for 235.61. It also sounds weird that your dealer sold you Castrol brand products because everything they sell should be under the Mercedes-Benz brand.

why would you do a DIY oil change video and not mention which oil type/grade you are using ?
@randomcar21904 жыл бұрын
I didn't tell what I used because I don't really know what is the right one for this car. The service sheet says it is 235.62. I could not cross reference the equivalent. So I'm not telling anyone what I'm using just in case it is the wrong type and screw up other people's diff. Best advice is to buy at the dealer.
