In this video I do a coolant change on a Hyundai Ioniq EV 28kWh. They all have heat pumps in the UK models. I have the official Hyundai workshop instructions (i.e. technical service bulletin (TSB)) and intended to follow these step by step. This is where I found the procedure to be flawed. Following these instructions didn't allow for a complete system drain and then flushing the system just diluted the existing coolant within the system and will then just again dilute your new coolant. This would make it a very expensive job as it would be very wasteful of the new coolant.
Running the water pump while draining does help to remove more liquid and it blasts out another litre or so. I didn't catch this on camera, but this still didn't completely drain the whole system. So instead I removed the 3-way valve and undid every hose from one end and blew out the old coolant and flushing water with an airline, so the whole system was completely empty of all liquid.
None of this is in the Hyundai TSB, so it does make you wonder if these instructions are being followed at the main dealers??
After the refill I got the full 4.6-4.7 litres of coolant back in and also did an AC and DC rapid charge, plus a drive to prove the system was full, air bubble free and not leaking.
The coolant used was Hyundai LP040APE02EVH0 2-ltr BSC-1 "electric vehicle battery coolant" at £19.20 inc VAT from our local dealership. You need 4.7 ltrs, so three bottles. This is probably a low conductivity coolant and completely over the top for the motor stack cooling system in the Ioniq 28kWh and not what was in the system from new.
Other suitable coolants in the UK are:
MPM 86000ALP www.mpmoil.co....
This is available in a concentrate or ready mixed. The cheapest way to buy this is actually the ready mixed in 1 ltr bottles from Euro Car Parts www.eurocarpar...

I want to thank you for this video. I have a 2017 Ioniq EV, 28 Kwh battery, just about at 100,000 km. I want to get the fluids changed, despite the owner's manual only calling for an inspection. My local dealer quoted me CDN $850.00 for a coolant flush - citing that it takes 3+ hours of labour and the coolant itself is over CDN $100 per litre. The dealer network is trying to screw over the consumer since our EV's require much less maintenance then a regular ICE vehicle. After watching your video, I'm sure it's something I can do myself.

I am sure you have covered this on another of your videos. Original Hyundai Coolant 'BSC1' has been found to crystallise and can produce a warning message 'Refill Coolant' even though the filler/expansion bottle level is fine. There is a Hyundai Service Campaign '20D140 Coolant System Debris Discharge & Coolant Change' (not a recall) where the coolant is drained, flushed & replaced with the new specification 'BSC2' It would have been a brilliant idea to have the BSC2 a different colour so the recall could be immediately seen to have been done, but hey ho can't have everything!

Yes, I've done many videos about this coolant change. See www.youtube.com/@GoGreenAutos/search?query=coolant However, this issues doesn't effect the 28kWh models, even when using BSC-1 coolant. So my conclusion is that the crystallising is only happening when the coolant is being pushed around smaller channels within the battery.

If you had the return pipe to the bottle disconnected and then the pump activated, it would pump Imho 4 liters of coolant out as the 3 way valve prevents the coolant in the OBC to pump away. But then putting in 4 liters new with 0.7 old/remaining coolant makes a betters ratio than the prescribed Hyundai steps.

I've heard some coolant is easier to build static electricity. So perhaps the coolant is specially blended for this and why it's so expensive. Just bought a 21' Kona EV with 31,000 miles and having the warning about inverter coolant low requiring a flush.

Oh that was fascinating, such a lot of nerdy work to start with then some really proper mechanical ingenuity. I was with you all the way there Matt, asking all those questions as you were and when you finally had all the pipes disconnected and properly emptied it I'm scratching my head and saying to you: "but how are going to get the air out?!" and then you did...genius! The conclusion I came to is: given I'm not fit enough to do it myself, if I can't find a HEVRA garage that "gets it" and either has seen or is willing to watch your video I'm coming up to yours to have you do it! I'll stay at my brother in law's for as long as it takes 😅 Fantastic work Matt, really appreciate the work that went into this video...I wonder if the layout* is better in the 38kWh...🤔👍 Edit: *layout of the stack and the pipe work, I mean
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos Жыл бұрын
Yes the 38kWh is identical in terms of the layout of the cooling pipework though the motor stack, but has an additional branch off to the battery pack with a second water pump. My subscription to the Hyundai workshop portal has expired, so I haven't seen the TSB for the coolant change on the 38kWh model yet. Plus this has been updated due to the coolant crystallising issues. There's not much point paying for it again for our own 38kWh, when it's covered under warranty, so might as well let them change the coolant for free.

@@GoGreenAutos well that is a good point, ours is only just over two years old so must still be under warranty. Our local Hyundai dealer was very eager to try to sell me an ev (though in the end I found one through Carwow) nothing they said or did during that process gave me much confidence in how well they actually know electric cars, but of course the salesmen are not the engineers. Nonetheless the outcome of any warranty work will be interesting. 🫣🙄 Joking aside it's great to have your videos there to refer to if something ever seems wrong. As you say, virtually any modern coolant is OK with aluminium, but it might be more about getting one that will not effect the O rings or pipes in the cooling system! The consequences of a battery pack with coolant sloshing arround the battery modules would be catastrophic. It would be tempting to use something like Evan's life time waterless coolant as is does not expand or pressurise when hot and has a very high boiling point. But it feels a bit like oil in consistency and therefore lubricates pumps etc. But this might degrade the seals! It is brilliant in ICE engines, totally preventing corrosion and protects head gaskets etc. Great content, thank you.

Here in the US you can walk into the dealers shop and buy a bottle of premix (coolant) specific to your model/year. They just look it up in the manufacturers system. I just picked a bottle from Subaru for a vehicle I’m working on and it’s a “Subaru” branded bottle (likely just repackaged) but they had another one on the shelf that specifically said “and EV” (which I think Subaru only has 1 EV and it’s relatively new so it’s surprised me to see, didn’t look to see any differences tho). I don’t know if just going to the dealer was is an option for you or not over there but it’s something to consider in the future if so.

From what you have found out, as only 1/3 of the coolant is changed it sounds like it would be a better idea to put in the correct specification 'neat' 100& undiluted antifreeze rather than a pre mix, or a much stronger mix? this would guarantee you were not diluting the original?
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos Жыл бұрын
Yes you could do. But then if I was doing this again, I would just remove the hoses, drain and blow out all the coolant and have it completely empty within a 20 mins. At this point, there would be no need to flush. Refill with new coolant and bleed. It always takes longer when its the first time, but if I was doing this again and not following the Hyundai TSB and not filming, I would have it all done in about 40 mins or less.

Hello, Thank you for the video. I work in a local Hyundai workshop and just today dealt with this issue for the second time with the same car. Tomorrow I'm going to finish the job, did a more thorough cleaning procedure, hopefully the 'add coolant' message won't reappear. I do wonder why the fault returned after two days of the coolant exchange that was by the TSB.
@GoGreenAutos
@GoGreenAutos 11 ай бұрын
So I assume this was on a 38kWh Ioniq where you're changing the original BSC-1 coolant for the new BSC-2 (as per TSB 23-01-049H) ? If so, I have my suspicion that the reason why the error reoccurs is that the flushing wasn't done well enough and all the debris/crystallisation wasn't removed from within the battery pack. Some customers are reporting that dealers are doing this job in an hour or so, which is too quick. The TSB says 2 hours labour, but in reality its nearer a 3 hour job if enough flushes are done. I'd love to hear your feedback on this.

BSC1 is what the Hyundai dealership parts department said was required for the 28kWh Ioniq. The original stuff isn't a low conductivity coolant anyway. BSC2 is now what Hyundai is using in the 38kWh Ioniq when they replace the coolant in the current recall. These vehicles have battery cooling, whereas the 28kWh models do not. The original coolant in the 38kWh models can crystallise, but is that BSC1? Who knows.

Yes the process is a bit different on the 38kWh as the battery pack is also water called and teed off the same cooling circuit. All dealers are now having to get this new "machine" as the coolant is crystallising in the battery circuit and it needs flushing out properly to get all the residue out. Seems like the heat exchanger, the bottle and the rad is mostly drained when you remove the plug. I then took the radiator return pipe off the bottle, and extended it to a bucket, plugged the bottle and topped it up with demineralised water. Turned on the car and set heat and AC to max. That turns the pump on and I kept adding water until it flowed clean into the bucked, and then I started adding coolant until it flowed colored again. I could add 4,3L that way.

What a frustrating procedure! After the flushing, when you have almost clear water in the vessel, would it be permissible to run the car and heat pump for a few minutes to dilute further? This should exercise the diverter valve to send the water further around the circuit. Unless in subzero temperatures, the lack of antifreeze shouldn’t cause a problem.
@HowardBurgess
@HowardBurgess Жыл бұрын
Of course, refilling a system that’s full of clear water is a problem if they only sell pre-diluted fluid :) Ideally you’d calculate the ratio and put in enough 100% solution to bring it up to the correct dilution.

If you just drain on the radiator and get 1,6 liter out, you then fill up with new coolant. That makes 67% contain of the old coolant remaining in the mixture. If you repeat this procedure another five times, you end up with 10% left of the old coolant and rest of the coolant is new in the mixture. Between every drain procedure you run the car.
