How to change the default door lock settings on your Toyota

Your late model Toyota unlocks your doors when you shift into park. Is that a good idea? Maybe not. In this video, I show you how to change that setting to something a bit more secure.

This was very helpful thank you! I am still not used to such a fancy computer in my car sometimes despite having one of these updated corollas in 2020 for the first time. When I had to get a 2020 Corolla last week, the very next day, my doors stayed locked when I left the car and I didn’t realize it , thus locking the keys inside a running car! I didn’t even think this was possible. I’ve been closely babysitting the car every day each time I get out, making sure I hit the unlock button twice. I’m so glad I can fix this, and not worry about the same mishap happening again.

Thank You So Much! It’s been almost a year since I used this video. Have felt SO SAFE! All Year!! I set it to Off. they are locked unless I hit unlock. You can still open the doors from the inside. The outside always remains locked when you stop/put in park.

Can the doors lock when you walk away or do you have to push the button?

Toyota does not have a "walk away" locking feature so you need to manually lock it either with the fob or by hitting the door lock button as you exit.

Hey sir I just got a 2020 tundra and the “vehicle customization “ is completely greyed out and I can’t click on it. The truck is parked im not driving and the engine is running, still won’t let me click it. I’ve even tried it on Accessory without the engine running but it’s still greyed out. Please help me out with the issue as my doors automatically unlock when I put the truck in park and I hate that

I want to lock the car from the outside while it’s running without having to use the physical key. Do you know how to do that?

It isn't easy... or safe. But if you insist, start by putting the window down on the driver's side. With the car running, exit the vehicle and close the door. Reach in and hit the door lock button. Then, lift up firmly on the window switch and quickly pull your arm out. All Toyotas for the past several years have an "auto-up" so the window will close completely. You've now locked your keys in the car with it running.

@@axetrops So you want the car to lock even when you don't ask it to? I don't know of a car that does that today. Some cars used to do this but all stopped because it caused nothing but problems and complaints.

I lock all doors end of the journey customer open door and jump run away didn't pay. I want make all doors control by myself. When i looked until the customer pay and after i open door for customer. Well... you can set it to not automatically unlock, but your backseat passengers and still let themselves out unless you set the child safety locks in the doors. Those have to be opened from the outside though and isn't safe and may not be legal for a cab.
