This is a video I made months ago and never uploaded. Here it is! If you want to see how I change the oil in my old Ford 8N tractor, here you go.
Part numbers:
Oil filter, APN6731B. I bought from a local auto parts store, but you can order them here: www.yesterdaystractors.com/APN... You can also find them on ebay!
Oil drain gasket: 8N6734 is the common number.
Oil, I use 10W30 but you may wish to use a heavier oil if you need to keep oil pressure up. There's some debate about whether non-detergent is preferred. Up to you, but from what I can tell, it's not necessary.
Filler material for the fill cap--you can buy at Tractor Supply: www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/prod...
This is not a channel about shooting big bucks. I don't discriminate--I'll shoot any legal deer. ;)
I want to help make KZfaq the #1 place for quality hunting entertainment. I want to help spread the hunting lifestyle. To do that, I set up this channel to showcase the crossbow and help others film their hunts and get those videos online. So, subscribe to this channel to be entertained and learn more about crossbows and filming in the outdoors.
This channel is about my love of the crossbow, hunting, and the outdoors. I hunt almost exclusively with the crossbow. I love it. Sure, like a lot of kids, I started hunting with a good ol' Model '94 Winchester 30-30 back in the 80's, but drifted away from hunting when I went off to college, law school, and started a family. As my daughter got older, I regained my interest in the outdoors, and I consider myself lucky to hunt on the same property today that I hunted on as a kid. I got the Excalibur Axiom crossbow in 2010 and I haven't looked back. This channel is the result of combining my interest in filming and hunting...
...and music, too! My related channel, Yankee Militia, showcases my music. Some of the music is hunting-related, so check that out, too! The soundtrack for this channel is provided by my band, so the two are intertwined. The album for the current season is available wherever you download music online, and the Special Edition CD is available on Amazon.com.

This is a really good video that I appreciate as a newer 8N owner who isn't a mechanic. One mention though: this video overlooks the oil bath air filter--you want the oil in that to be the same grade as the crankcase.

+Rosie Rosalez Glad you liked it. Sorry about the part numbers. I am adding what I have to the description of the video, though. I can't tell you NAPA parts vs. other brands, just the "Ford" numbers. Hope that helps.

That last thing you took out with the brillo type filter on it, where u put the oil in....mine comes right out without taking off wingnut and when oil pressure is up oil will come out of it....does it have a gasket? Or am I missing something to make sure it gets tight in there?

What do you think about the 8N compared to your New Holland for putting in your food plots? Does your NH do alright with working the ground up?
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 7 жыл бұрын
here we have rocky soil. the 8N with a plow and discs does a killer job. I got the NH because it would run a tiller. Does a great job too but not rock-friendly as I'm finding out. it does a good job though. A good set of discs might have done me better. you can't run a tiller on the 8N though so it depends on what you want to use. I will say the bucket loader is really nice, though!

On your 8N tractor, what kind of Carlisle tires do you use. Mine are the ribbed tires and sometimes they tear up the lawn when I turn because of that middle rib on the tire. Should I change out the tires for that reason? I think I need a flater tire...you know what I mean...
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 5 жыл бұрын
Very expensive to change tires, but if you are on lawn grass all the time, then you definitely want lawn tires. If you're in the woods and fields, you will want the rib tires like what I had. Hope that helps!

NAPA, Tractor Supply, Steiner, or Just8Ns are good sources for parts. I have been a HD mechanic for 30 years and worked on every kind of machine using an internal combustion engine. I worked as a field service mechanic on up to running a repair shop. to manager of fleet operations for large construction companies. In all my time I've found most do it yourself jobs go bad and cost many times over the price for a Pro. The main reason? lack of planing, which includes finding the right way to do the job and the specs. Start with a little research. it'll pay off nicely. Also using an oil rated for HD diesel service in gasoline engines works great not the other way around though. in a fleet made up of cars, gas and diesel pickup trucks, 18 wheelers, earthmoving equipment we used one oil in all the engines. Shell RT4 or Shell RT6. 5-40 or 15-40 depending on winter, or summer. If you have several vehicles it nice having just 1 oil to keep on hand.

Richard, Thank you for reminding me of using heavy duty diesel engine oil in a gasoline engine. I am going to change the engine oil and filter in a late 1950 Ford 8N and a 1952 Ferguson TO30. I am going to use the Shell Rotella T4 15W-40 year round since it does not get that cold in this climate. My father always used HD diesel engine oil in his gasoline engines and they lasted for many years without overhauls.

One more quick queston. How do you drain the old oil out of the filter canister housing? Mine does not have a drain valve like some I've seen Thanks again!
@Deathbybunjie
@Deathbybunjie 8 жыл бұрын
Mine doesn't either. I use lots and lots of old rags to clean it out. There isn't that much in there usually. The only other way is to take it off completely.

When you fill the oil you should fill up the 6 quarts and then fire up the tractor again so that it pumps oil through it and then you check the oil again and then you can put more in

On the bottom of both the Oil and Trans pans there are split / cotter pins sticking out. Does any one know what the reason for those is? I have the same on my 48 8n.

+Dennis Wage yeah I've been there, you can swish cleaners or even kerosene around in there to clean it out, then let it dry out good. Gotta love the 8n style tractors!

Henry Ford hadn't considered designed obsolesce yet. He was trying to build a tractor that helped the lowest rung of farmers, and being able to maintain the machine yourself was a big issue for him. The other part of the equation is that these tractors were relatively under powered and generally you couldn't do things to them to wreck them.
