Best paint job for the mower deck- Get it POWDER COATED! That’s tougher than any industrial paint!😊

I know that you’re right, unfortunately, sometimes doesn’t make sense to invest any money into machines that are this old and rough. I just put her away on them and keep them running by doing the bare minimum. In my opinion, that’s all a John Deere deserves.

Good Job !!!! On my John Deere La120 I did the following Pull the deck Jack up the back just enough to get the tire off Add extra jack stands in the back to be safe Remove the left rear tire to give more access Now you can get at that cap Pop the cap off with a long thin flat head screw driver Use a syphon to suck out the fluid You might have to wiggle it around to get down deep I got about 2 quarts out Now you have your choice of what to refill it with A- same crap from John Deere B- 5W-50 Full synthetic oil C- 15W- 50Full synthetic oil - I don't run it in the winter so 15W-50 is fine C- Amsoil has a fully synthetic Hydrostatic fluid I think B or C is the cheaper choice Doing it this way makes it easy to change every season or every 200 hours. Some people install a drain plug in the bottom I didn't Even if you can get all the fluid out just replace exactly what you took out and run it for a month and repeat the process Like I said if you fish the hose around you can get it pretty deep Also changing the drive belt AKA the transmission belt and the two plastic idler pulleys in the center is very important Because a loose or worn belt or pulleys that are failing have a dircet impact on the transmission. Nothing beats Yankee ingenuity Nothing.

Very nice. Hugh help. You method of removing fan, different from another video showing retaining bolt removal. The bolt on mine was already loose - so I went that way. Totally loved your effort. I am ready to drain tank. Getting it disassembled was quite doable. And my fins were SO FNG BAD. UGLY in there. I am doing the belt as well. So appreciated. 4.875 stars. 5 Stars for under deck lighting as commented by others.

Good video....just 3 comments. 1) best to clean transmission before opening it up. 2) I would remove the rear wheels and liberally lube to prevent rusting to axle 3) FWIW I'd go ahead and get drain plugs from Tuff Torq. That way you can get a better oil drain. I prefer to do as much as I can as preventative maintenance. For high hour tractors it's a good time to replace belts with it all apart. Thanks for sharing.

You’re not wrong. My machines are pretty grizzly and beat-up so I’m looking to make them last - but not going to get carried away. When I did this service to my L120, I tried to remove a rear wheel and it was already seized … so I left it alone. Thanks for the great comment Martin!

Thank you so much for doing this video! Adding the lighting during the disassembly was very helpful. I just finished replacing my drive/transmission belt and noticed the transmission was caked in dirt. Like 3/16" thick. Pretty sure from the presence of oil. I don't know if I have a leak or maybe oil vented out thru the vent. When I was replacing the drive/transmission belt I did find a broken V pulley. So I replaced both pulleys. I plan on pulling the transmission, cleaning it and changing the fluid. I haven't noticed any issues with the transmission when using the mower. My tractor is a John Deere L111 with 390 hours on it. Bought new in 2006. Thanks again Killing it Country. 🤠

Great idea to pull the unit out and clean it up. If you have access to a pressure washer - that’s a great way to remove the buildup. It really should be clean to shed heat during operation - it’s like a big heat-sink. Thanks for watching!!

Nice video. Only issue would be the John Deere 100 Series tractors don't have a K46 transmission in them, it's a T40. You have to step up to a 200 or 300 series to get the heavier duty K46. This information is straight off their web site.

I’m still finding lots of online resources pointing to K46 as being the hydrostatic transmission in my LA140 and my L120. It doesn’t really matter. K46 and T40 are basically the same with only approximately 10% difference in torque. Thanks for stopping by.

I used 1/3 quart 10W30 conventional, 1/2 quart 5W40 synthetic, and 1/2 quart of SAE40 non detergent compressor oil on mine. Those were the open bottles I had on my shelf that I wanted to use up, and had been drinking beer so couldn't safely drive to the store! Seems to work great!

So the best thing to do when you buy a k46 transmission or mower with that one on it is to first take out the transmission 10w30 motor oil when it's still brand new and put in the 20w50 synthetic hydrostatic zero turn transmission fluid
@KillingItCountry

I did a fare bit of my own research as well when I decided on oil type and grade. I'm sure that simply changing the oil annually will make the transmission last longer than the rest of the tractor.

In "Free Mode" maybe want to try manually turning the wheels to rotate the tranny gearings to move fluid into possible trapped air pockets or fluid level will be lower than expected later on...fluid will not be "topped off" properly.

@@KillingItCountry I changed the oil on my old tractor with 237 hours and judging from the condition of it when I got it used it was most likely never changed. Black and shiny not good looking. I'm thinking my new mower that's actually new I'll do it at 25 hours then again at 50 then 100 if I ever put that many hours in it. Wondering if it'll actually make a difference or if it's just a waist of time and it'll self delete regardless. Every video on the subject the transmission is slipping or not going fast so it's at a point your on borrowed time if it works better nobody does it to prevent issues in the future.

I believe that as your HST gets hot, you’re loosing power because the oil thins-out and leaks back through the pump. I have read that some have been able to improve performance and extend the life of their HST with an oil change. In order to maximize cooling, it is vitally important that you run the machine at full RPM’s to make the most of the belt-driven cooling fan above the HST and clean any debris off the top of the HST while you have it out. All the best, feel free to follow up with additional comments if I can help further.
