That's a really nice clean and clear video AUTODOC. I just replaced my front pads today and was going to tackle the rears tomorrow. I've looked at the rear calipers when rotating the tyres and always been a bit puzzled about the single slide pin bolt back there, and to be honest I wasn't quite sure how that was going to work. Your video showed very clearly how it rotates about the other pin once the single removable pin is out. Now knowing how that works I feel very confident that I can quickly replace those pads tomorrow. A big thank you. :D

I notice the replacement disc he fitted didn't have the M8 removal holes so the next time will be a nightmare. As for letting the caliper hang on the hose, it is a widely touted thing that you should not do it, but the hoses withstand 100's of PSI in use and are more than capable of withstanding the weight of the caliper, just not best practice.

I have now found out what has happened and how to fix it. If the discs are old and worn (like mine) the drum shoes for the parking brake within the discs wear into a grove and prevent the disc from coming off even when screwing in the two M8 bolts. In this case you have to remove the little rubber plug and rotate the hub so that the hole it reveals is at the bottom. You will see a drum brake compensator/adjuster wheel. Rotate the adjustor wheel with a flat screwdriver in an upward direction. This will contract the parking brake drum shoes and allow the disc to release (in my case, without any need for the two M8 bolts). I think it would be really great if you could include this information into your video. Luckily I am replacing both discs anyway, but by just following your video I broke one disc and that could have been disaster if I was only trying to service the PB drums. And please could you highlight that the Parking brake MUST be OFF. But thanks for making the video in the first place. And BTY - "xdgmnyrdf" No one's trying to be a 'smartass.' It is a nice video, but it needs to be accurate or you can cause damage to your car - I would think most people would care about that! For 'nice' videos try "Kittens will make you laugh"

This is not for USDM Toyota Prius '04-'09 because they have rear drum brakes

Hi italianice678. These are mostly regional differences. What is standard equipment in one country is sometimes different in another. In UK and Australia most gen2 prius come with the rear disc brake as standard. There is also a small drum brake built in to the centre of that rotor/drum, but it's only used as a park brake. (You can see the park drum brake very briefly at 3.22 btw.)

Hi, i have exactly the same rear brake system on my 2006 prius brought from italy and i have problems finding the rear brake pads to fit... For which region is this type of rear brakes?! Thanks

you have HAVE to disconnect the 12v battery before any brake work on the Gen2 Prius or it could auto activate the electric brake pressure system.

Do you not have to either disconnect the battery or allow 10-15 mins for the brake pressure to relieve itself then leave the key FOB far from the vehicle? Without showing this step won't the brake system be under high pressure and be very dangerous?
@autodocuk
@autodocuk 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! The system at this video shouldn't be disconnected, as we won't press back the brake caliper piston, but only will change the brake disc. If you press back the brake caliper , please, open the brake tank cap . Disconnect the manual brake system, if an electric manual brake is mounted.Best regards, Autodoc.

You should mention to put the pads back as they came. The rear pad back in the rear and the front in the front.

What is not mentioned is that the parking brake MUST be off (as far as I can tell). At first I had it on and when the disc would not release I investigated and worked out about the parking drums. I released the PB but still when I cranked the two m8 bolts the disk cracked as the PB was still not separating from it. Same both sides. The PB drums were hardly shown. Surely it is good practice to inspect them whilst the discs are off?
@autodocuk

Thank you for your feedback! Yes, you are right : before removing the disc, first, loosen the handbrake mechanism and also draw the drum pads so that the pressure to the disc's walls would be minimal. Our new videos will surely include this information for our spectators. Best wishes, Autodoc.

Is in not very irregular to do a brake job without replacing the pads? Why not include replacing worn pads with new pads and show how to depress the piston to allow room for the new pads? It is a very clean and nice video, but for the practical DIYer or garage this video does not demonstrate how to do a brake job on a prius! Beware.

Thank you for your feedback! You are absolutely right that when making such replacement, one need to replace the whole kit along with pads. But the car owner preferred to have replaced only the brake disc. In the next videos we will surely show the replacement of the whole kit. Best regards, Autodoc.
